Let's Make Puerto Rican Coquito (Coconut and Rum Cocktail)!

  • Tis' the season to get nutty!!
    Let me show you the different ways I make this Puerto Rican holiday drink! My Coquito is spiced, boozy, and easy to make. Choose from virgin, vegan, vegan-virgin, quick, old-school, or semi-old-school. Make yours with fresh coconut milk or get help from canned milks.
    Alcoholic Coquito will keep in the fridge for up to 6 months (or longer). Make sure you keep it properly chilled when you're not enjoying it.
    Virgin Coquito must be consumed within 7-10 days, but doesn't need to be cured for 2 days before enjoying it.
    Full Recipe Here:
    senseandedibility.com/coquito...

    When I make coquito, I think a little egg makes it thick and creamier. I use 1 tablespoon powdered egg. It calms people down about having egg in it. I also add just a pinch of salt. But using tea and real vanilla bean-I gotta try that!

    • @SenseandEdibility
      @SenseandEdibility  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Eggs definitely make it thicker, and as soon as you add it, in its natural state or in powder form, it becomes ponche, which really doesn't matter, but is important to tell people in case they have an eg allergy. I think you'll love it with the tea and vanilla bean.

    • @SenseandEdibility
      @SenseandEdibility  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I show it in the full recipe here: senseandedibility.com/coquito-cinnamon-coconut-rum-cocktail/. This is a step that I recommend as it strains any clumps of coconut fat that might have developed during the process. If you don't do it, you're likely to have some fat in the coquito which will cause it to be thicker after curing. You can drink it right from the blender, but it will taste more of alcohol than if you let it cure.

  • @Ariel_530
    @Ariel_530 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    If you don't like coconuts, please try this drink anyway. I HAAATE coconuts, but you better believe I'm the first person in line to get my glass of coquito at every Christmas season party at my boyfriend's parents' house. I look forward to making it with them every year and try to gift as many bottles as possible to my friends and family. I haven't had a single complaint from anyone I've gifted a bottle to, and they always remember to ask me for another bottle the following year without me even mentioning it. Coquito is love and joy in a bottle ❤️🍾

      Thank you!! I love it when people "get" the name!😉
      I have no brand loyalty when it comes to from but I do try to keep it all in the same brand. I usually prefer Don Q in my cocktails since it's a PR rum, but their spiced rum is pretty pricey because it's aged (and I can't always find it anyway). So, I use Bacardí.
      You can use your favorite rum. Try to keep it as close to PR rum as you can just to honor our people.

    Can’t wait to try…although will omit the spiced rum, & anisette ..not trying to encourage that licorice flavor…not a fan…w/ eggs it’s punch or egg nog…the one thing that surprised me is thought evaporated milk went in it.

      The star anise doesn't encourage a licorice flavor like anisette (the liquor) would. You don't taste it on its own at all, but you can most certainly omit it if you want to.
      I don't add evaporated milk like most people to because it dilutes the flavor of the coconut which is what I'm here for. Enjoy it!

    Me gusta la proporción en los líquidos en la segunda parte, aunque prefiero variar la mitad de la leche condensada por "heavy cream" para disimular un poco el sabor intenso de la leche condensada. El te, o caldo de especias no lo había pensado con agua de coco, aunque si pensaba que se podía añadir a la otra parte del proceso. Eso si cambiaría el anís estrellado por semillas de anis.

    Also, how come you don’t use evaporated milk? Just wondering cause most recipes have it

    • @SenseandEdibility
      @SenseandEdibility  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't use evaporated milk because it dilutes the flavors of the coconut, which is what I want to taste in my coquito. Canned coconut milk is nothing but evaporated coconut milk which serves the same purpose, but gives your coquito better flavor.

  • @VanessaGarcia-dn8sy
    @VanessaGarcia-dn8sy ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How do you serve the coquito after it’s been cured and the coconut fat is now separated? Is there anyway (tips or hacks) to avoid this?

    • @SenseandEdibility
      @SenseandEdibility  ปีที่แล้ว

      I address that in the video, but you can strain the the coquito before serving it. The fact is that the cream of coconut is nothing but the fat of the coconut meat, so you're going to have it incorporated into the coquito. Straining it through cheesecloth after curing it will help eliminate some of that.

    Grate recipe. One note you shouldn't add raw eggs to the blender. The egg yolks should be whisking with sugar and then temp with hot milk or coconut milk. Then you cook everything until it's thick. This gives more flavor, body, and keeps it from separating.

    • @SenseandEdibility
      @SenseandEdibility  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't need to go that extra step. The alcohol in the coquito cures the eggs so you don't need to do any tempering. When I've added eggs, I've never had an issue with the coquito separating. But, if it works for you, I'm happy to hear that.

    • @SenseandEdibility

      I’m a fan of very coconutty coquito and feel as though evaporated milk just dilutes the coconut flavor. If you want less coconut flavor you can totally replace the coconut milk with evaporated, though.

    How to get thick texture?

    • @SenseandEdibility
      @SenseandEdibility  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you want a thicker texture, you can decrease the amount of spice tea or rum you add. You can also add a cup of vanilla ice cream, but that's a bit much for me. Lastly, you can add 4 very fresh egg yolks to the blender after you add the rums. Some people say that turns it into ponche, but who cares?

      Not when I'm making it with fresh coconut milk, no. I mean, even when I make it with canned coconut milk, I try to avoid using it. If you think about it, canned evaporated coconut milk is a better option than evaporated cow's milk because it adds more coconut flavor to the coquito.

      Yes, I think it is overkill. Unless you're infusing the rum for weeks, it won't give what you're waiting for it to give. Distilling coconut in rum is a more detailed process, which gives the results I think you're wanting.
