    Finally, found someone who knows how to make authentic coquito. Hardly no one else uses tea.

      It's such a great way to add flavor without mucking up the color!

    Eggs were used back in the day en las montanas for consistency. Once evaporated milk was accessible the eggs were no longer used. I too make the tea, that is original and yes with Pitorro is the Real Deal. I use PR RUM, preferably Palo Viejo and Don Q. Felicidades. 🇵🇷

      I WISH I could find Don Q or even an artisanal rum from las montañas.

    I’m not a drinker and lactose intolerant but I have used this in French toast for Christmas morning breakfast and in bread pudding especially after soaking raisins in the rum beforehand ❤

      I would totally do the dairy-free version if I were you (coconut milk x 2 cans and sweetened condensed coconut milk).

    You are always the best. That tea idea is dope. I was in the countryside of Puerto Rico for Christmas once. The tradition is the ladies go singing in the village door to door. The lady of the house invites them in and serves them little glasses of coqui to then they go on their way singing to the next house. Best coquito I ever had. I had a lot of and I was underage 😂

    Cant wait to make this! My ocd getting to me tho lol. The recipe seems to say you use a sieve and tea towel when bottling but didnt see it in the video. This a 100% necessary step? Store was closed n didnt have the tea ingredients so making this for NYE unless you think theres enough time between now and 6pm tonight. Right out the blender? Lol

    • @SenseandEdibility
      @SenseandEdibility  ปีที่แล้ว

      I show it in the full recipe here: senseandedibility.com/coquito-cinnamon-coconut-rum-cocktail/. This is a step that I recommend as it strains any clumps of coconut fat that might have developed during the process. If you don't do it, you're likely to have some fat in the coquito which will cause it to be thicker after curing. You can drink it right from the blender, but it will taste more of alcohol than if you let it cure.

  • @thetalkingtherapist1225
    @thetalkingtherapist1225 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Tweaked my recipe to follow yours. While the flavor itself is very similar, this recipe is definitely an exact science (no eggs/fighting here but my Ita would not approve, (“¡Salte! Que si tu no le echas huevos no es coquito!” 🐸🇵🇷🍹) but she’d still drink it 😝! So, I particularly want to THANK YOU for your clean, educational, and non-judgemental instructional video! And WEPA! Me gusta la proporción en los líquidos en la segunda parte, aunque prefiero variar la mitad de la leche condensada por "heavy cream" para disimular un poco el sabor intenso de la leche condensada. El te, o caldo de especias no lo había pensado con agua de coco, aunque si pensaba que se podía añadir a la otra parte del proceso. Eso si cambiaría el anís estrellado por semillas de anis.

I HAAATE coconuts, but you better believe I'm the first person in line to get my glass of coquito at every Christmas season party at my boyfriend's parents' house. I look forward to making it with them every year and try to gift as many bottles as possible to my friends and family. I haven't had a single complaint from anyone I've gifted a bottle to, and they always remember to ask me for another bottle the following year without me even mentioning it. Can’t wait to try…although will omit the spiced rum, & anisette ..not trying to encourage that licorice flavor…not a fan…w/ eggs it’s punch or egg nog…the one thing that surprised me is thought evaporated milk went in it.

    It’s on this week!

    • @SenseandEdibility
      @SenseandEdibility  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The star anise doesn't encourage a licorice flavor like anisette (the liquor) would. You don't taste it on its own at all, but you can most certainly omit it if you want to.
      I don't add evaporated milk like most people to because it dilutes the flavor of the coconut which is what I'm here for. Enjoy it!

      Thank you!! I love it when people "get" the name!😉
      I have no brand loyalty when it comes to from but I do try to keep it all in the same brand. I usually prefer Don Q in my cocktails since it's a PR rum, but their spiced rum is pretty pricey because it's aged (and I can't always find it anyway). So, I use Bacardí.
      You can use your favorite rum. Try to keep it as close to PR rum as you can just to honor our people.

    • @SenseandEdibility
      @SenseandEdibility  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you strain it a couple of times through a fine mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth it will reduce the clumping. But there is coconut fat in there so there may be some clumps of fat that remain. Don’t forget to add cinnamon sticks back into the bottles after straining.

    • @SenseandEdibility

      I don't use evaporated milk because it dilutes the flavors of the coconut, which is what I want to taste in my coquito. Canned coconut milk is nothing but evaporated coconut milk which serves the same purpose, but gives your coquito better flavor.

    • @SenseandEdibility
      @SenseandEdibility  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m a fan of very coconutty coquito and feel as though evaporated milk just dilutes the coconut flavor. If you want less coconut flavor you can totally replace the coconut milk with evaporated, though.

    How do you serve the coquito after it’s been cured and the coconut fat is now separated? Is there anyway (tips or hacks) to avoid this?

    • @SenseandEdibility
      @SenseandEdibility  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I address that in the video, but you can strain the the coquito before serving it. The fact is that the cream of coconut is nothing but the fat of the coconut meat, so you're going to have it incorporated into the coquito. Straining it through cheesecloth after curing it will help eliminate some of that.

    When I make coquito, I think a little egg makes it thick and creamier. I use 1 tablespoon powdered egg. It calms people down about having egg in it. I also add just a pinch of salt. But using tea and real vanilla bean-I gotta try that!

    • @SenseandEdibility
      @SenseandEdibility  ปีที่แล้ว

      Eggs definitely make it thicker, and as soon as you add it, in its natural state or in powder form, it becomes ponche, which really doesn't matter, but is important to tell people in case they have an eg allergy. I think you'll love it with the tea and vanilla bean.

      Hi Vivian, I add the spice tea to both, yes. If you prefer a lighter spice flavor you can omit it from the coconut milk and just make it plain. I had a glass tonight (after letting it cure for 2 days) and when I tell you it's so smooth and unassuming!!🤣😂🤪

    • @SenseandEdibility

      Yes, I think it is overkill. Unless you're infusing the rum for weeks, it won't give what you're waiting for it to give. Distilling coconut in rum is a more detailed process, which gives the results I think you're wanting.
