Thanks man. I hate when techs wont share their knowledge with new techs learning. We appreciate your help
Thank you so much for taking the time to show how a real professional is trying to help others.
There are still honest people in the world. God Bless.
Honest? All parts and labor might be same price with new one. They have around 20 parts on furnace will fell soon. Get new unit you have years of warranty on it. It take 1 to 2 hours. Don't let them do this to your house ok.
You appear to be working on the exact same model as my unit. I really appreciate the video and you taking the time to show the procedure. I don't need to replace my heat exchanger right now but I suspect there will come a time. It just looks like a lot of careful disassembly and sharp edges and taking care to get everything back together properly. Working with a system that uses natural gas and emits carbon monoxide and other gasses one needs to observe a good amount of common sense. My heat exchanger runs $471 plus shipping and I suspect with my experience I can do the labor. If I had a criticism it would be that your video runs through the disassembly really damn quick 🙂
I just replaced my heat exchanger on my 20-year-old furnace. Why?? I've replaced about every part on it in the last 3 years and bought extra parts that I have on the shelf. I know this furnace inside and out and can troubleshoot and service it myself versus paying someone. The quality of this furnace is still better than most of the cheap junk I see being sold. As long as parts are available, I'll keep it.
My American Standard freedom 80 - 5 port gas furnace is also 20 years old. It’s very clean and I’m very familiar with it just like you. I wouldn’t have no issue replacing this heat exchanger. I just wonder what the condition of mine is currently. The flames are all good and the thing has had little if any issues over 20 years. I replaced the control board the other day and that was really the only issue I’ve ever had. I have no reason to suspect the heat exchanger is bad, but I have to guess that it being 20 years old. It’s probably close to being necessary. How would you recommend I do it? Can I check to see how good it is? Should I just go ahead and replace it knowing that it’s gotten 20 years out of it? I have carbon monoxide detectors throughout the house, so I’m not too concerned about that at this point.
@@condor5635 When mine cracked, i noticed a few things happening over a couple weeks. First, it was having a hard time heating the house on the coldest days under zero degrees. Then the color of the flame went from blue to orange/yellow and I slowly noticed more flame roll out happening. It didn't set off any of my detectors and I even have a fancy hand held that wasn't picking up much of a change at the registers. After replacing the heat exchanger, I examined it very closely and couldn't see any type of cracking. But it was because the new one made the old furnace work like new again. For peace of mind, I would replace yours next Summer when it's warm and you can go at your own pace not under a cold panic situation. It's easy enough to do, and the whole thing just slides out. Just make sure to recheck the gas line pressures with a gauge when firing it back up.
Warning! Don't take my advise without doing your own research and checking with a professional.
Incredibly helpful. Really appreciate you showing us the flaws in the old unit. seeing is believing.
Thanks!
Another high quality video with good information. I have a 20 year old Goodman split system. Each winter I visually inspect the burners to insure they are working properly. In Southern California, we average 15 to 25 nights of use for the furnace heat, usually 3 hours in the evening. Hopefully, this small amount of use will allow another 20 years of use with regular maintenance.
Fun fun happy joy. Thanks for showing this. I am replacing my heat exchanger on my comfortmaker. This one is a 96% unit. So I need to also disconnect the backing plate that connects both the primary and secondary heat exchangers together and use high temp gasket sealant when I reconnect them to the backing plate. Love these videos.
I bought new heat exchangers years ago in anticipation of around the 20 year mark or when it failed. Getting close! Thanks for the insight. I have a carrier.
Thank you, brother! Thanks to you I am now an informed consumer and user for either hiring a reputable technician or doing it myself. Or checking in the price for replacement.
Excellent job explaining the heat exchanger and taking it out very good
Great video. First time I saw a heat exchanger. Thank you.
Glad I could help!
God bless you and your family. Thank you for your honesty and professionalism
Wow this video was really well done. Thank you!
Nice job you made it look very simple. I’ve been in the trade for a few years band haven’t had the chance to replace a heat exchanger yet
thanks for the video. I would not be afraid to tackle that job. Of course, I am fairly familiar with the parts on my furnace, and I am pretty mechanically inclined. It's a case of taking your time and thinking ahead as you go. Of course, if it's under warranty, I, as a homeowner wouldn't be able to do it myself I suspect. I have a two speed Trane with the variable speed blower. I'm more concerned about that super expensive ECM blower motor. I am installing a surge protector on the furnace to try and protect it. Those modules on those motors are super expensive by themselves without including the motor.
This was common years ago on lennox furnaces , lennox sent out a kit Stainless bolt nut and 2 washers to replace crip rings which is stronger . Seems overkill to replace heat exchanger when a couple of washers could fix the issue
I did NOT see (nor, was it shown) where the heat exchanger was cracked??!!
Excellent works. Thanks for sharing!!
Great vid. Knowledge is power.
Thanks for some knowledge!
WTF IS A VID?
@@Capecodham video
@@clydeusa6596 What did you do with the time you saved not typing eo?
@@Capecodham my fingers are old, so every letter matters. Lol. Lol means, laugh out loud.
This looks rather simple process. I'd just take photos during disassembly having not done it before. Check seals, etc.
Very informative and helpful. Thank you sir
An excellent video!
Thank you!
Very good video. I like you do more videos. Spread the knowledge and experience . Thank you.
Oh brother....... REPLACE HEAT EXCHANGE is no joke 😞.... Take everything off to get to Heat Exchange
Most excellent video thank you very much! My five burner freedom 80 American standard is 20 years old. It’s very clean and has never had really any issues. Would you recommend me replacing it irrespective of its need just because it’s gotten in 20 years out of it already?
Great video, I learned a lot! Thank you!
Thx so much for the video. I had a tech check my propane package unit, said “roll out” and that the tubes of the heat exchanger were cracked. He suggested I buy a whole new unit. I thought I could fix and you showed me how, including the tiny cracks.
Couldn’t one weld over those cracked areas? Like a strong metal patch?
thx?
Sure, but is this an indication of the condition of the rest of the heat exchanger? Having gone to the trouble of removing the heat exchanger and thinking about a weld repair, maybe a dye penetrant test on other areas might be in order? This would show developing cracks.
Dye penetrant testing on a new heat exchanger may not be totally crazy, either.
Great video
Good information
Thanks very much for the knowledge
dont negate the fact that the trane legacy model of furnaces are the most service friendly design in the market.
i love them dearly.
also have deep appreciation for the lennox HS and HP series of condensing units.
they are a beut.
nice video. great knowledge. thanks for sharing
So around 20 year is the age of heat exchanger and one should worry about replacing or when the flame start acting as you showed in 1st video then?
Great video well explained
Looks like a $1000 repair vs $8000 for a replacement
Labor for this would be way over $1000 lmaooo, most companies would charge in the neighborhood of $2500- $3500. Mostly the fact they have to put they’re name on it, if it’s under warranty sure but the labor price will still be there.
my last company charged about $1400 to replace but if it was over 5 yrs old, we would highly recommend a new furnace.
But what about lifetime warranty on part from Carrier? Regularly annual service & 30 days ago they changed control board talked possible CO issue. Never mentioned possibility of heat exchange being bad. Told us we need new furnace!!!
Where do you order it from ??
if a furnace is just out of warrantee, would it be cheaper and better to change the whole furnace or just the heat exchanger?
Yes without a warranty you’re spending 3-4K and risk other components that could still fail after that (depending on the age and condition of the furnace)
Usually better to replace. 10 years parts warranty and all new components are hard to beat
Replace the Damm thing don’t flirt with old gas appliances
@@IFreshhx I just replaced my heat exchanger and it was $700 shipped. Had it in 2 days. Took me 3 hrs to replace.... easy!
Thanks for posting this. We have one like it and seems to have some flame roll back. The flu vent is clear, How would i check for cracks? Thanks again
Combustion analysis. Or take it out and look.
Very well done
So, a heat exchanger can be replaced or is it a better value to just replace the furnace?
Usually, it's a much better value to replace the furnace
Considering the amount of work you have to do to replace a heat exchanger , basically tear out the entire upper section of the furnace ( in your case) I would replace the unit . All that work and you still have old parts, switches, sensors, pc board, blower fan..... that with time they may fail and lets not forget the cost of labor. Single stage furnaces are not that expensive, I just replaced my 30 years old furnace for $2000 labor included
Don't expect your new furnace to last for 30 years.
I think it is the same price to install the new furnace or to replace the heat exchanger….
Could you use some JB weld on it if it wasn't under warranty?
No
How much should this cost
Great video. Thank you so much
When dealing with a cracked heat exchanger, does the CO only get pulled through the ventilation system by the forced air, or would it also come out the front of the furnace?
depends on the nature of the cracks - in the right places, they can push flame and exhaust out of the front of the furnace. furnaces do have rollout switches, but they aren't fool-proof.
Clear concise information. Covered under warranty? How many hours of labor for the
typical job? Thank you, 3 hours labor. 16 year old unit. Thank you.
Yes it had a 20 year warranty on the heat exchanger.
Can you actually get one if you are not a tech?I doubt it at least if you are in canada.
Perfect job my friend
What would cause that to happen? Just age?
Rust damage
Got a 1972 lennox the heat exchanger cracked
I have had to replace my furnace with a new furnace for this reason. Mine also was a Train as well. It was 22 years old so no warranty and was too big for the house. I don’t think it was that easy to replace the exchanger. I would add a photo but don’t know how.
Nice video. Is the only way to look at heat exchangers on furnaces that sit horizontal is to go in through the limit with a camera?
Nice video. Seems like an expensive fix. I wonder what the price difference is between a new furnace and replacing the heat exchanger. Even under warranty you still pay labor.
Great point! Even just paying labor, the price is still too high for me to recommend replacing the H.E. Labor would be around 1K-1.5K and a brand new furnace would be 2K-3K.
@@HVACTechTips I understand you would replace furnace but inducer motor & control board replaced. Quote to replace furnace 2800-6000 and we have a 3 flame unit. I'll take warranty part & pay labor
I had the same problem with my furnace(heat exchanger).but furnace still working fine for now, should I keep using it for now? any problems?pls let me know. Thanks.
I'm sure you figured it out but if there's a crack DO NOT use your furnace carbon monoxide will leak in your house
Do you have to set manifold gas pressures after installing new heat exchanger? Thanks
It should still be what it was before but it's best to check it to be safe
No sir WE APPRECIATE YOU!
I’m suspecting I have a bad heat exchanger three out of my four burners are slightly burning outside the whole . Could it be any other reasons?
Is it a 90+ percent furnace?
It's more than likely a split or cracked heat exchanger. You need to have it looked at and inspected by a reputable company
Can those cracks be welded and exchanger be put back into service? Or will they fail relatively quickly and it's not worth your time?
great job king
Did you do a combustion analysis when you added the new heat exchanger. Also other ACCA 5 QI standard checking e.g. on airflow and water flow through heat exchanger?
GREAT VIDEO!
Our oil furnace smells lil bit at start then seams to go away - we were told it’s a crack heat exchanger
I have a 24 year old gad furnace w a cracked heat exchanger. Do you think it's worth placing or should I just buy a new furnace?
Definitely buy a new furnace. The 24 year old furnace is not worth fixing
@@HVACTechTips my Lennox is 47 years old I'm sure it's not efficient maybe 50 % but it's easy to work on ,, don't think the new one's will last as long,,,
What a garbage design 🤔
@@HVACTechTips What if my furnace is 10yrs old and they also said the Inducer motor is going. Do I just get a new one?? Please answer, I just don't know what to do..Thanks!
It depends on if there is other problems with the furnace. If it’s just the inducer, I would say to just replace the part but I haven’t inspected it. I would recommend getting a reputable company out to inspect it. Take their recommendations, if the part is too expensive, it may make more sense to replace the furnace. Normally furnaces last 15-20 years unless they have not been kept up.
Excelente video 💯💯💯💯
Just informed about crack in 28 yr Carrier called to check and bad board which I think was the main issue. Quoted 10k 14k. Going to breathe more life into it with this if I can manage to find one.👍😎
they should make them out of thicker steel so the would last longer, but then they would not sell as many. I just had my 45 year old furnace replaced and was told by the installers that i would be lucky to get 20 years out my new one. they don't make anything like they use to!!!
Too thick would effect heat exchanging properties. That’s why, instead, they just give you like 20 year warranty.
How do I find out if the heat exchanger still under warranty ??
Call the manufacturer or put in serial number on the manufacturers website
Do the duct cleaners get inside of the furnace to clean the exchanger area?
No
What would’ve been the price different. Between a new furnace and repairing it ?
Anywhere between 800-1000$
In my case it was $3300 as the new furnace was quoted installed and I replaced the heat exchanger myself. Both furnaces are rated 96% efficient.
I put a new gas furnace in 95 plus and man it must of had a couple ounces of oil from manufacturing outside the heat exchanger and was smoking bad for a minute enough for the smoke alarms and the homeowner to freak out on me thinking I did something wrong and was burning her house down
How much did the new heat exchanger cost?
I just bought one, and it was $650 delivered by FedEx this morning.
Nice - thanks!
Looks like a design flaw. Are other furnaces have same heat exchange design like that?
Yes some are like this. Others are tubes without the rings.
There is program that ends April where Carrier will provide funds for bad heat exchange between 1993-2011
My record is 20 mins on a 80% goodman.
😃
Wow. I guess that's the biggest repair job possible on a gas furnace!
I'd like to know the cost of the replacement part.
Nice job, and well produced video.
$500 to $1000 seems to be common. On some units it can be a multi-hour job because you have to break down practically the whole system to get at it. Factor in the cost of the part and labor and it can frequently exceed 50% of the cost of a new unit, which means most are replaced in their entirety.
@@channell11 And replacing a unit that is 15-20+ years old will give you a huge boost in efficiency saving you money. Ive never heard of anyone actually replacing the heat exchanger tbh.
@@livens100 I just did. I was quoted $4k for a new furnace as it was smaller and would've needed duct work modified. I looked at one in their shop and it look flimsy compared to mine. They are both 96% efficient so where would the savings be? The new heat exchanger cost me $700 and I had it done in 3 hrs.
@@livens100 Im considering it. My dependable 92 is from 2000. I just didnt like the sales pitch. So im replacing the board & all the sensors too. Stuffs all dirt cheap & under $500 for everything on amazon. The throwaway culture has just gotten ridiculous.
Just received a quote to replace heat exchanger for $4345. But they’re being generous & giving a $650 ‘good customer discount’.
Let’s say the part cost $1000 which it don’t but let’s run with that for now. That means labor is $3350. We can subtract the $650 from it & it still is $2700. Suppose it took him all day or 8 hours… that’s $350/hr on labor. But realistically it takes 4 hours right? And that’s including his bologna sandwich with Fritos lunch! So now labor is $700/hour.
That’s crazy to pay that and not just replace the entire system!
Supply house has heat exchanger prices - for mine it's $420 - Rheem Criterion 2 - 23yrs old . Then 4 hrs labor - even at outrageous but universal $300/hr -- - still "only" $1620. Others cannot be that different. Maybe it's just that they don't want to the 3-4hrs solid work in one go -- and disassemble everything and have to know what they are doing --- when they can just rip off $3K +as markup + still charge 4hrs labor - on a new system. Most repairs are much less than an hour - but they still charge $300+ for labor and double the part cost - and refuse to quote parts/labor separately - instead quote "the job". It is a ripoff.
Wouldn't installing a new furnace be a better choice for the owner the labor alone seems like it would pay for a new furnace
Awesome, thanks
No problem!
nice video , but the music is TOO LOUD ! Every time music is on I have to turn it down than when you start to talk I can not hear you
If you have a house that you plan on living in for years to come, you may want to check & See if the mfg. makes the heat exchangers in stainless steel. The replacement ones he is installing will crack after the recycle life. I’ve had stainless for over 20 years & still no cracking.😊. The initial cost was more expensive tho. Ask about the $.
Awsome I have to do this at our hunting camp oil furnace
Designed to fail on purpose...
Why do you change that part what was the problem
This is the first video...
Watching A Furnace Run With A Cracked Heat Exchanger
Write a lot bigger check 🤣
I kind of think those leaks in the heat exchanger could have been fixed with some sort of high temperature steel epoxy like JB Weld. The heat exchanger itself wasn't cracked, just those rings either let go, rotted away, or were never there. Maybe the mating surfaces should be crimped together during manufacturing. Or they could be crimped together if repairing.
Perhaps a video showing the INSIDE of the old heat exchanger. How the two SECTIONS
relate to one another? We understand two separate air chambers.
informative video, even with the needless honky tonk piano
❤❤❤❤❤
Great tutorial! Thanks, also just a suggestion during the parts you fast forward please stop using that circus music its kind of annoying rather it be silent
Nice bracelet
What was the cost parts and labor for this job?
Heat exchanger was under warranty so they just paid labor. Around 1,000$
@@HVACTechTips Thanks for the video. My elderly mother’s furnace just got diagnosed with this problem. As a DIYer I would love to fix but gas lines always seem intimidating. After 16 years the HE part is warranted but the labor cost will be approximately $900. With respect to HVAC company workers, the $300 PER HOUR these businesses charge??? Just maddening, sorry to say. This is as bad as the medical field charges these days. I hope you get a good bonus out of these jobs then!
@paulsynek7272 exact same situation and freezing weather is imminent. I will pay the labor gladly. Why kick the warranty out.

Yes it was
Great video. Can you come replace mine? The technician I had come out was too scared to replace it because of possible CO2 leakage. He was trying to sell me on a whole new furnace unit around the price of $8,000 to $10,000. No thanks.
That’s extremely high for a furnace replacement. Maybe he was pricing you a full system replacement. I would love to replace yours but We’re probably states away. Lol
@@HVACTechTips Probably. I'm in GA
@@HVACTechTips What can cause a furnace to stop working but the blower to stay working? Can cracks in the heat exchanger cause this?
If the high limit is reached, it will cause the blower to stay running. Yes it could be caused by a bad heat exchanger but there could be other reasons as well.
What a waste of money. I would never replace the heat exchanger in a residential furnace. The whole furnace should be replaced so all the parts are new and a new warranty applies. If there is a full replacement warranty on the heat exchanger, I would ask for a cash credit on a new furnace. A defective heat exchanger is strong evidence of a defective product so I would change brands as well.
*What a crappy design, it's practically guaranteed to fail.*
i can't even get lit. th-cam.com/video/LjcFQW_cRs8/w-d-xo.html
Why not just weld the cracks? Lmao seriously.
Thank you for the video to see how it's done.... lots of information...very professional ......but please lose that clown music....🤡🤡 !
🤣
These things are $800-$900 and seem like they are built like crap. Stamped steel, galvanized and spot welded in certain spots? For that price I would expect stainless steel tubes fully welded into a manifold. But, if their furnaces lasted for many years they wouldn't get more of your money.
