- In this HVAC video I go over what a clogged heat exchanger looks like, how the problem arises, the difference between the primary and secondary heat exchanger, The result of one of the chambers clogging as well as why some furnace safety sensors may not detect when the problem occurs. I go over the things that you should be looking for and the testing in order to see if you might have a problem. Supervision is needed by a licensed HVAC Tech before doing this as Experience and Apprenticeship garners Wisdom and Safety.

AC Service Tech LLC If frozen condenser pipe busted due to electricity off during freezing temperatures will this affect the heat exchange? I have carrier infinity. 2009 gas furnace and the heat exchanger switch is tripping every 2-3 days depending on how often it is turning on the heat. Like now it is 23 degrees so I assume putting stress. Did the condenser pipe busting and siting there for long time before fixing cause this issue? If so I can get my homeowner insurance to cover fix or replacement. I had busted/frozen pipes throughout. House that insurance is covering. This happen last winter in Park city utah but just came back here to deal w/ the issues. Thanks for your help.
Excellent video. Tech was here yesterday. Furnace cycling off and on. Throwing an overheating code. New flame sensor. No roll out or odors. He checked gas pressure. No problems found so he says it must be the heat exchanger. Wants to sell me a new furnace. Yes, I it's almost 20 years old but with no evident problems found it sure feels like I'm just being sold a new furnace. Calling for a second opinion tomorrow. Thanks
Nowadays more and more hi-eff furnace installed and water condensation will be No.1 killer of the furnace. I heard my furnace inducer may likely killed by the condensation. Thanks for the great demonstration.
Thanks for your comment Gerry Cui!
Great content! My ArmstrongAir 95V had Roll out limiter that has tripped a few times. I had 2 companies come out to investigate the Heat Exchanger. We removed to remove the old furnace to see the Heat Exchanger and a rivet on the Primary popped out. Manufacture warranty still covers part. I am going to buy a new Goodman 2 stage furnace. Every homeowner should understand how their furnace works so they are able to identify issues before they become life-threatening.
Awesome tutorial! Great for Hvac Techs that are running into issues such as these! Def not like old Clare’s or cast heat exchangers that you could prob shoot with a 30-06 and still keep going..unfortunately nothing is made to last now a days...great tutorial love your channel!! Keep doing what you do “do diligence!”
Thanks Jason!
Thaks for the detailed explanation. I didn't understand how a heat exchanger can get clogged..now I see how the metal flakes and rusts
Lucky the homeowner recognized something wrong. Wow that is some burned up material. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Brad!
Thanks for the great video! I recently found your channel. You gave really good explanations on what happened to that heat exchanger with no roll out switch on one side of the burner box
Thank you very much, I appreciate your comment!
Amazing video explaining how to be safe and what to look for
Excellent clarity on important parts on video.
Thanks Rick!
Do you have a video how to check a secondary heat exchanger on high efficiency furnace? Using a combustion analyzer... what pressures are you looking for ? And how to put the combustion analyzer tube in PVC flew pipe without damaging it ?
Absolutely excellent, informative and visually captivating video!! You sir just saved me thousands of dollars! Thank you!
Thanks JayB!
Are the replacement Secondary HXs made better by carrier or will they meet the same fare later on ?
Thanks
They make them better in the new furnaces. The warranty heat exchangers get the same type for replacement for any failed ones, thanks!
This excellent example of flame rollout always to idea to have furnace checked once a year and make sure the tech check the flames
Great video ,You explained everything what happened to my furnace
An excellent explanation. Thank you!
Thanks Far Beh!
You are welcome. What temperature does the manual rollout switch trip. I note the flames are good and blue but there is only warm air at the registers. Almost like the flame heat is being redirected or wasted.
I had a similar issue with my carrier high efficiency furnace installed back in January 2010, and have had this issue already after only 8 years, luckily I have the extended warranty for labor and parts for 10 years, so all is covered, once parts arrive.
That's good that it happened in that time frame then, thanks Steve Baldwin!
All is not covered when you still have to pay labour for a technician to install those parts by the hour.
See these all the time on old Bryant's and carrier furnaces. Find crack also looking through the limit hole with a mirror.
Thanks DSMFERLIFE!
These furnaces are supposed to be tipped forward slightly to allow proper drainage out the condensate drain. wonder if this one wasn't tipped properly.
This one was pulled out before I got it, however, I did another heat exchanger change out where the furnace was tilted correctly and same result, thanks

Thanks for posting, great video!
Awesome video! Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Excellent images.
Thank you very much Juan!
Good quality Video...keep the coming...
Thanks Darrel Udelhoven!
Thank you for the detailed explanation and shots!
Thanks Chris!
Blessed my Evolution 90i was registered for Limited Lifetime Warranty within 90 days of installation.
Limited Lifetime equates to double Warranty of 40 years.
Had to replace the heat exchangers. Parts covered by Warranty.
Labor on me...
Seems like if the secondary exchanger plugs up more and more one should get a higher negative pressure at the pressure switch tube... Like an indoor blowers entering negative pressure; if the return air ducting filters and such are restricted you end up with higher negative pressure at the blower inlet... You mentioned reading less pressure if the exchanger is restricting flow????
excellent video
Thanks Chad!
Great video like always, thank you!!!!
Wouldnt a combustion effiency test give you evidence of a plugged heat exchanger? I would think you would get high levels of CO? Thanks for posting this.
Yes absolutely, ha you made me second guess myself and I looked to make sure I said that. I did mention doing a combustion analysis a couple times between 9:45-10:15. Thanks for your comments and questions!
Yes. And when you show up at a house and you can actually "smell" the stench of the aldehydes before you even get close to the venting and in the furnace room, you know you're looking at CO levels in the thousands of PPM.
thanks for this information ...
Glad to help!
New Heat Exchangers Secondary exchanger assembly is made of stainless steel, some manufactures offer a limited lifetime warranty on them, not sure about the fine print however.
Top notch, teaching.
thank you. very educative as always
Thanks Sesha Chary!
Dang. Excellent video.
Thanks Working Man!
Great tutorial! Do you know what furnace manufacture this is? Tempstar/ICP furnace?
Good old Carrier/Bryant replaced at least 30 of these death traps usually not slopped properly but not always the case.
Yeah, not good!
Sean -can you fix or restate your comment so we can figure out what you are saying?
Looks like the secondary heat exchanger would have a longer life span if it was installed vertically as being installed horizantly all the condensate goes through the bottom ports causing it to rust prematurealy.
Great video, thanks
Thanks!
Thank you very much for the great video.
Your welcome Alex! Thanks
Wow, Thanks for posting this!
Glad to help!
Great video. I just ran into an early 2000 carrier 90+ furnace with secondary heat exchanger problems. I guess the polypropylene coating deteriorates and clogs the heat exchanger. There is a list of model numbers for carrier and bryant with affected models.
Yeah and you can see how much they are willing to give you for labor based upon the age. Thanks Dustin!
thank you for your time
Thanks Willie!
thanks for that great video "AC SERVICE TECH LLC" this is looks like carrier 58mca060 and that my problem right now with a -1 celcius. any advice replace or repair? thanks
Excellent
Thanks RJParker!
Great video thank you.
Thanks Ron!
Thank you so much for the video! I have learned tremendously by going through your list of videos. I do have a question - my Lennox furnace attempted several time by inflaming for about 30 secs before it went to safe mode. When I bypass the pressure switch (the higher pressure one), it runs perfectly fine. I've ruled out other possibilities using your pressure switch video. Would that be a clogged heat exchange? And if so how would I verify if that's the culprit? My furnace guy tries to sell me a new furnace so wonder if you could provide your perspective on this. Thank you in advance!!!
Good video
Thanks Rob HVAC!
ac service tech, how old would you say this unit was? great advice/teaching man!!
That was about 14 years old I believe, thanks!
I posted that 2 years ago
Ive had 2 clogged secondaries on 2007 carrier 96% infinities this last month. Original home owners so warranty is 40 years. Total insanity.
Should also mention both were in horizonal-right configuration and one of the secondaries was replaced 3 years ago. Still waiting on new parts to come from factory but we'll see whats up with the relatively new one.
Is the secondary heat exchanger drain suppose to be clean when you do maintenance? Or what procedure is best to keep the furnace from becoming more of an issue later on?
Unfortunately, there is no procedure to clean the heat exchanger on a gas furnace, thanks!
Doesn't seem like it's an issue with not cleaning. It's a parts and design issue that can't handle the corrosive elements of acidic water vapor over the short course of a decade. No preventative cleaning will help out.
Very good video!
Thank you very much!
Gas pressures were not set up by the installer. Improper installation from day one was the cause. I had a new hi eff furnace and tank-less installed. Pressures were not checked. Pretty obvious when the tank-less started throwing codes of low gas pressures. Called the gas company and I was way low out of spec. He replaced the regulator first. That helped a little but was still way to low. He then replaced the gas meter which fixed the issues. Now with proper pressure above the minimum we were able to adjust the manifold side of things. Pisses me off that installers are not doing their job.
have you seen condensation leaking through the cover plate gasket and onto the burner on a vertical 90 plus furnace?
I tend to see that more so when the inducer box is higher than the combustion box where the seal breaks on 80% efficient furnaces.
Trying figure out how some kind of pinkish fluid got into the condensation line and glopped all over the inside of the induction motor and looks
Like into the tubes
@@gerhardschemel3565 rust from the secondary
Is this a problem for my new one, or were these issues resolved???
What can it be if I have my furnace in a closet type environment and when I close the door it runs for like 10 minutes then shuts off? Works fine as long as I keep the door open though? Looks like it’s a code 33 but what gives? It runs like a champ with the closet door open? Already changed the filter. No signs of burning. 🤔
That sounds like low return airflow. The return grill through the door may be undersized for the amount of airflow that needs to move through, thanks
thanks great info
I got confirmation of the racket that is run by these manufacturers, but I did come to this video to find out what the Burn Spots mean on the primaries.
How do you prevent degradation that has begun?
Is it possible a secondary heat exchanger could cause the rollout to trip on a 90plus ive had a call everything checked out fine co draft gas pressure the only thing that stuck out was blower very dirty and secondary bit dirty i cleaned it and it didnt trip. Was bit odd it would take like 20 minutes to trip but after the cleaning it didnt trip. Ive seen situations the high limit trips but rollout. Just seemed strange could this be possible. Was goodman 90plus
Man this is scary stuff. My old 88 Model Rheem 11EA-JR will be 40 years old in 2028.
It sits beneath the floor and does not have a single flame roll out safety switch. It has quit working for now which is a good thing because I found a rotted out Flue pipe under the house. So far I have found 1 bad 90-370 fan relay and a bad pilot igniter.
Need to check the heat exchanger and I'm gonna put some flame roll out switches on it.
I think this is what’s wrong with my furnace it constantly keeps tripping rollout and I found rust in drain hose?
Quite likely. Call your favorite HVAC company to check it out.
I found a 10 year old unit tripping the furnace board on roll out. None of the switches had to be reset manual lock out . Checked for obstructions in the flu. Flame never rolls out of the box. Thinking the board might be bad. Going to contact Luxaire monday tech support.
The flame rollout is usually in series with the high temp switch. You may want to check for a heat rise across the furnace and also when the blower motor turns on and off, especially if it were a downflow, thanks. A combustion analysis would also show if there are no cracks in the heat exchanger, thanks!
@@acservicetechchannel Thank you so much for your support. Unit has a different code on the furnace board for high limit. The reason i don't think its a cracked heat exchanger is because the flame never rolls out in the short time it runs.
Customer had a new ecobee t stat. Broken common wire on main board. Furnace is working great now. Thank you for your fast response.
@@shawnriddle3018 flame doesn't need to actually roll out. If the burner enclosure get's hot enough it will trip the roll out on it's own.
Hey, so I am an HVAC student, and my instructors hold your TH-cam channel in very high regards. I had a question for a research assignment requirement we have been assigned that I figured I'd go straight to the source to attempt to answer. The assignment is to: 'imagine we are responding to a service call/customer complaint about a broken heat exchanger in a gas furnace.' The assignment further specifies, that we have 'removed the heat exchanger, and see a visible hole in one of the tubes', and furthermore instructs us to 'make a recommendation on what to do with the heat exchanger', and to 'document any costs that may be incurred by the customer based on the recommended solution.'
I was wondering if you might be able to provide me with any insight as to how Y'ALL might handle this issue. (note: as a 'research assignment' we are expected to reach out to experienced sources, so you are by no means aiding or abetting any form of cheating, whatsoever, by responding, just in case that needed to be specified =). I understand you guys are super busy between the business and the channel, so I would consider it an honor if I got a reply. Thank you for all the awesome resource content, cheers!
Education is important, and experience is key. I need to have some theory to understand why and how. This video is of a Carrier heat exchanger failure. Usually has a code 13 or 33. Rollout switch manual reset is usually tripped. Click. Lazy flames with rollback because of that primary to secondary blockage. I’ve taken them apart and seen it on many no heat calls turned estimate for changeout. If it’s a Carrier/Bryant/Payne 90%+ with either lockout codes, the rollout switch is the first check.
8 years in service. Learned a lot, know a little. It takes time and patience.
Is it a clogged condensate drain that causes this or gas pressures ,burning ?
Great Question, In this scenario, it was the design of the manufacturer because the secondary heat exchanger rusted shut due to the condensate that it is supposed to handle thereby shutting off the ability for the inducer motor to pull the exhaust through. There was nothing wrong with the design from the installer and the gas pressure was set correctly.
Well Done thank you
Thanks Pastor Ron and Thanks for your Service!
Thank you so much. This is just great
Thanks Luc Dumouchel!
someone below said this was a Carrier/Bryant design. Is that true? Hideous.
I would have to question their engineering.
Looks like one of the Carrier Weathermaker 90% furnace heat exchangers. The issue with them is that they used a plastic liner in the secondary heat exchanger, which would pull back, exposing the metal to acidic condensation. The result is that they breach or become plugged with rust.
My Goodman unit goes thru 4 cycles then gives 7 SHORT BLINKS(low flame signal) WHICH I was told it's the pressure switch! But I was told by someone else it sounds like a cracked hear exchanger! The reason is because the unit
1.1st click the inducer motor comes on!
2. 2nd click the heating element glows!
3. 3rd click the gas is coming thru the pipe but doesn't reach the element to lite! Now if I blow on it I have to keep blowing on it till the blower motor kicks on!
4. If I don't blow on it,sometimes it might lite and the blower motor will blow it out and that leads to
5.The unit goes thru 4 cycles then shuts off!
So what could be the problem??🤔🤔🤔🤔
If the blower motor blows out the flame then that sounds like a cracked heat exchanger. That is a dangerous situation due to carbon monoxide so don't run it and verify the crack if you can, thanks
@@acservicetechchannel how do I verify it? Sorry I'm just starting to learn about this stuff! Lol!
@@charlesgunter2478 verify visually somehow such as with a video scope or taking the blower motor out to look in or taking high heat temp switch out and looking in or adding the video scope through there or through burner channels. Look from above depending on the type of unit, thanks
If you know that that chamber had fire can you clean that chamber with a vacuum.
Not on a 90% efficient furnace due to the secondary chamber and how the primary connects to the secondary, thanks!
good video really appreciate👍👍 I'm still waiting for more wire schematic videos and for the full PM one😊😊😊
Thanks Pedro, got it
I have a Carrier Infinity 2009 high eff....it stopped putting out much heat about a month ago and at same time the exhaust started to smell different. I checked the burners but they look to be burning ok and no signs of flashback, but there is a definite problem and my guess is the 2nd exchanger is plugged. How can this peice of junk not be engineered to outlast the 20 yr old one it replaced which was fine except i got sold on a new on! It pisses me off so badly!
Instead of using a copper tube and fin secondary heat exchanger as they do now, they used a galvanized tin heat exchanger lined with a rubber type coating unfortunately. I would have a tech run a combustion analysis tool on the exhaust to read if there is a problem, thanks
acservicetech Hi oh there is a problem. 3.5 hours temp rose 4 degrees only in 30's outside. Im not one of those folks whos not sure if ever worked better or that didn't notice it takes longer when its colder outside. I cant believe i paid top dollar for an inferior peice of garbage. Can anyone tell me if there exists a company that puts out a good well made machine that will last over 30 years like my old ones please? We r SUCKERS buying this cheap garbage. What good is tech when it takes us BACKWARDS??? More money and junk machines to save a few bucks in efficiency? That's the definition of stupidity. Thanks.
acservicetech Tech out today....secondary exchanger shot...said they they r claiming new useful life of new furnaces is 10-15 years.....replaced it as ita on a recall, no fee. So all furnaces are now throw aways just like everything else. Pulled a 50 plus yr old from my moms house, exchanger looked like new....should have kept that thing. Shame what the world has become. Cheap throwaway junk.....
@@mrpush2855 Medicine has no cures, mechanical technology just renders us back to cavement. I'm trying to find out from Carrier what kind of racket they're running.
Typical Carrier and Bryant furnaces. "What ever it takes to ruin your day" best warranty in the business in order to correct all the mistakes, let's not forget rattling and leaking inducer motors
Why is my igniter Light Up 3 times then only gas fired up.
Moral of the story some heating n cooling units are trash the day they we’re built
I feel like secondary heat exchangers were the turbos of today. Increased efficiency, but at the cost of increased maintenance and sooner replacement… Sad.
Why I will stick with my good 80%s. Great video though.
Surprised it was not setting a pressure switch fault also
Yeah, I as well, thanks Jim!
Ah! Going through this issue right now in fact, and I also noticed the condensate was staining things rusty red and seemed to trickle out of the furnace long after it shuts down, something it never did originally.
Long story short it's getting replaced Thursday🤣
So how many people died in this crash?
Carrier got sued over these. It was criminal that they made these models as long as they did without fixing them.. horrible.
How does get clogged
They rust shut due to being a bad metal used as the heat exchanger
What kind of a furnace did you say this was ? I’ll be sure to remember to put it on my shit list
Whoever chose the metal for the secondary chose... poorly.
can you clean the heat exchanger?
You cannot clean this heat exchanger. It is the secondary that is clogged. These clogs are easy to see when it is out but is covered by everything and is basically the last thing to come out of the furnace. Thanks
Perfect way to run the risk of killing people in the name of "energy efficiency" ! Not to mention all that money saved on gas (and then some) will have to be spent to replace a furnace that died prematurely! I would rather have a simpler design that might burn more gas, but is safer and more reliable.
Great video thank you
Thanks Ron!
Excellent
Thanks Jim Rr!
