I was actually really excited when I saw the ready player me avatars… I’ve been struggling to find one that I feel actually represents me well and thought “oh, an avatar that is literally me would represent me!”…. So I created one and rocked it for about 5 minutes…. It’s amazing how out of place you feel as yourself when literally no one else looks even human let alone like themselves. Still struggling to find my avatar but definitely not rocking the ready player me one!
VRChat is just a shit show lmfao. Literally nothing but dudes in girl avatars that show way too much so they can get attention or go "famous" on TikTok lol... I'd much rather VRChat if it was just people hanging around doing whatever. I tried it for a solid 10 minutes and gave it up after every single world I went to was just these over the top slutty female avatars and they would swarm people for attention, they were all Mute of course...
Hey, thanks for the video. I have been using a RPM avatar since when I could first upload one back at the start of this year. Since then I have made many friends, most of whom now think of that avatar as "iconic" of me, which, I admit, paints me into a bit of a corner. Now I am working with that same avatar (as GLB to FBX file) to change over the textures, reflections and expressions to something I really want (have learned a lot about Blender and Unity since then, and love working with the Creator Companion...still a long way to go, though). As a boomer (i.e. born in the 1960's) and now into retirement from a multi-national company, I agree with you that I hope that "soulless big corporations" stay out of VRChat, and that we continue in this Wild West Show for a good long while. But I am glad you do not hate people who use them, as it was just too easy for me to pass up (and for someone as old as me, there were very few avatars I could identify with...after all, I kinda looked at RPM as "Sims-like" which I could identify with in my computer gaming past...also, it gave the option for gray hair, which not many other "out of the box" avatars had...okay, and it was for free, which a boomer will always opt for if that option is available). Anyway, thanks again for a great video!😃
I really appreciate you watching! I do have to say thank you for being in the VR space. Sadly in VR we really don’t get to interact between generations, the technology can understandably be too complex for some people. It really makes me happy that you’re finding a home in VRChat! I really really mean this, thank you for watching my video and it makes me so happy when I meet older people in VR. I hope to run into you one day!
Imagine the amount of foresight one would need to have to be able to plan a videos timing to fall in line with billionaires fucking around and finding out in order to meme it up, truly a legend. In boneless we trust.
When I first started in VRC, I saw the ad for Ready Player Me in the default home world. I decided to check it out and see if that's the type of thing I'd be interested in using. However, two things really turned me off. One was the fact that you had to use their system to add clothing/accessories to the avatars (no options to create your own or buy something and add it) and secondly, the style really wasn't my aesthetic. Now that I'm using an avatar I bought from gumroad, after months of using publics, I'm glad I stepped away from RPM.
While some of the stuff on gumroad or booth can be shoddy, I've so far been very impressed with the selection, especially in terms of SFW stuff. It's fun shopping for it all too ahah
It's funny because they're advertised in the default VRC home world. And yet you still barely see them. So even brand new players who know nothing about VRChat are like, "Absolutely not."
These days I don’t see them too often, but yes they stick out like a sore thumb. I’m all for people being able to choose what they want, but they are just a little too corporate for me haha
@ImJustJaime when I first started playing, I saw the poster, but then saw the default avatars and though, "why do the ready player me avatars look so uncanny?" Was immediately put off by them and settled on a opossum
@@BonelessVR XD it's weird but kinda interesting. I'm used to people being their favorite characters from wherever plus the usual avis like ours but that's it.
I had to use a ready play me avatar recently and I really didn't like it. I was doing a contract gig to be a virtual dancer for some metaverse music thing. I thought I initially could use an edited booth avi but the end I was forced into looking like various anonymous ready play me avatars. As a dancer I was like these avatars look so weird and I feel so disconnected from these characters. The thinking behind this line of thought was that by being a ready play me avatar I could be anyone and not a individually recognised person. Unfournatly for them this was just a bad gig and I complained in post that this wasn't what I agreed to do. The gig itself advertised that we could self represent with our custom models but the reality was the director wanted something different. I like the freedom of being able to upload any avatar on the vr platform I use or having a wide range being forced into a avatar against my choosing led me into this weird situation. I use both uploaded avatars/custom avi or other public ones I'm cool with and I don't mind that as long as I feel comfortable in the avi.
I do know some people who edit Ready Player Me avatars and they can end up looking surprisingly decent with enough custom work- people who aren't super into the anime aesthetic might prefer the more realistic proportions. But out of the box... Meh. The clothes are almost always weird, and They also only have one expression- dead eyed, and dead eyed with a creepy smile.
vrchat freedom is a reason why a lot of peoples i know never use it, like one time we did try to make vr chat meeting, and we forced peoples to use ready player me avatars so we do not have some oversexualize anime girls , you can not make meeting about money and stuff and have anime girls , but after this peoples just got quest and went for horizon , it is way better option for normal peoples
Not going to lie, a bit amazed that you guys moved to horizon worlds, really the first time I've heard of someone using it for its intended purpose. Yes it's hard to have serious meetings in VR when everyone can just be memes or gigantic anime girls with big *personalities*, but I don't really see many people using VRChat as that kind of platform
I used to go to group meetups for a star trek group that enforced modified ready player me avatars as the dress code, and I really didn't feel like I could express myself in something like that, but I don't really think it's the company itself forcing this on people though or butting their way in, i see it as just another option but I agree about not liking the style. It feels really unexpressive and overly safe.
Luckily... Unless the corpos completely lock out player customizable content... I think there will always be a market for custom user created content. You will never be able to get the level of detail and personalization out of premade assets. Hell in fact few games really do that anymore. I found it kind of depressing that Fallout 4 had a worse character creator than Fallout 3. Or how Stardew Valley has a better character creator than the outer worlds. I just like to be immersed and represented how I want to be. And modding/custom content is sometimes the better way to do that.
I am really happy to see Bethesda putting so much time into their character creator with Starfield, but I know it'll be 3 days after its release before nude mods pop up everywhere haha. Sometimes mods are tasteful and add to the experience, but just as easily it can ruin it. It's the price we pay for being able to do what we want I guess
I gave Ready Player Me a try when it first launched, and I didn't really like how the looked. It doesn't seem like they've gotten much better, and now that I know they are intertwined with NFT's I have even more reason to not like them. I have made 2 of them and they like almost equally as bad. They're built some what "optimized", I don't really remember their actual ranking in game but they are built with every single part of it is separated into different mesh piece and then glued together. Their Visemes aren't horrible, but they are far far from the best I've seen. I haven't really used either of them that much, but generally speaking they really don't feel that good to use especially with full body
I'm all for options, but avatars are something to be picky with. I've been very impressed with what the community has cooked up! Thank you for leaving your thoughts!
That's why I made sure not to blame people who use them, some may just not care to learn everything that goes into making an avatar and just want to vibe, can't be mad at that
i used a readyplayerme avatar, but i heard someone say «the fuckin readyplayerme avatar» and it made me realise how out of place i looked, im currently attempting to figure out how to make one myself. i found a free model on the unity page i really like and plan to use it if i can figure it out
People shouldn't be bullied out of something they like, but I will say VRChat definitely has an agreed upon aesthetic and anything outside of it tends to get flack. It's an interesting video Idea that I've been toying around with and I think your comment is enough to push me over the edge to make it haha. Check the discord, we have a fair amount of talented unity users who might be able to help you navigate! Otherwise Phia's tutorials are so so good

(Also i didn't want b00bs. But mostly the first reason.) And Im so happy i did. This is the kind of stuff that i dreaded. And now i never have to worry about it :D
I saw ready player me and figured I'd give it a shot. Took a selfie, shoved it into the website, and it spewed out something horrendous. It looked like me but not really, and most of all it was bland. I looked at the model for a solid few seconds, closed the website, and booted up VRoid Studio to make my own avatar.
do they look like this because they make the same avatar for every platform? They look like avatars from FB's metaverse and ones from the vive's. I guess they can't be used in say Rec Room though. I don't think they look horrible, I have never seen anyone use an avatar like this in VRC though.
My feeling is that they do what they can to make sure it'll work on as many platforms as possible, but as a result it loses most of the individuality I think most people would want in an avatar. It would be funny to see these guys running around in rec room though lmao
this makes me scared that my avatar I'm making for myself will stand out in a bad way since I'm trying to go for a semirealistic yet still stylized look (think vaguely in realm of valorant/overwatch/fortnite realm, maybe with a dash of the moba Smite has) that has tastes of my own art style but stands out from the typical avatars that you see around vrchat because I'm trying to make an avatar into something that feels uniquely me.
