  • New LEGO Powered Up App (3.1.0) announced the ability to control Power Functions devices. LEGO didn't say how but we have found out: two new blocks allow using the Color Sensor as an IR emitter (something already shown by PyBricks project and others) using the Simple Output Mode of the PF IR specs:

This is just a proof of concept. For proper use, the sliders need some math correction (0 to 100 needs to be converted to 0 to 7 and -100 to -1 needs to be converted to 9 to F)

Nice work! :) Any chance of a visual breakdown of the exact components used and how they are connected? I can kind of see what's going on, but wouldn't mind some confirmation. :D

Your comment is very interesting! What protocol/method do you want to have?

Wi-Fi. Some years ago, it was too expensive and consumed too much power. Nowadays, devices like the ESP8266 made it a commodity.
But could also be ZigBee or even LoRa. Just want a protocol that respects the OSI model.

That is not really a good option. Very expensive and you need a lot of space. A BuWizz or SBRICK is much cheaper and nicer

Right. But I am not defending the option, just showing that it is possible. Also very soon there will be a firmware that allows the LEGO Powered Up hubs to work in standalone mode, without tablet or phone. That's not possible with SBrick, not sure but I think also not with BuWizz.

Jorge Pereira , all good with this video except you are not telling the details, just tease us. Have seen a more informative video meanwhile and can say, that Lego should create a little box with BT receiver and motor driver like SBrick and all is good.

I had a link in the video description with a photo with the "code". I know the video you saw, glad it helped you and all others. My video was to show at Facebook Powered Up community, where the question was made, that it was possible. I don't pretend to teach people how to code with my videos, sorry. There are plenty of good coders at Eurobricks forum and other places that can do that much better than me.

Also I don't want LEGO to do more BT BLE receivers. I don't like the way market decided to use BLE... it isn't a good protocol for robotics, just for simple gadgets. But this is what we will have for the next years.
