  • Is LEGO Powered up finally better than LEGO power functions? When the powered up system first came out, it was pretty awful, since you couldn't customize it at all. However, because the powered up system receives regular software updates, and ever since a recent update, it is now fully customizable, is it finally a good replacement for power functions?

      @Odd Gaming The models are getting worse and worse. There is less technic in technic models. The modells cost way to much and the colors Lego now uses are terrible. In fact, Lego often can't even make a model with just one or two colors. And I am not talking about the structure and axles.
      Just look at the Lego Technic Ferrari: It has no technical functions. The mirrors are a different kind of red than the rest of the body, it is ridiculusly overpriced, does not have any details and the few that it does have are because of stickers. And do not forget the giant hole in the middle.
      And I am not even talking about Control+. It is more than ridiculusly overpriced and in my opinion, only got introduced, because Lego's designers forgot, how to use gears and mechanisms, what Lego technic was all about. And for such huge amounts of money they can't even give us a remote control for people, who do not have a smartphone (and the people who have a smartphone that is not compatible with the app)
      And then compare that with the models of other Brick manufactures. Cada for example has a fully remote controlled Ferrari (no license, but it looks exactly like a Ferrari 458) with twice as many parts as the Lego Ferrari. And it is ridiculusly detailed without using stickers and does not have giant holes everywhere. The part quality is exactly as good as original Lego Bricks. And all of that for the same price. If you do not count shipping and so on, it even costs less. And do not tell me it's bad because it comes from China. Lego also produces in China!

    You perfectly explained that the systems are for different use cases. Lego could have them both exist in parallel. Why they had to cancel the "older" system is really not explainable. The powered up system is more like a "Mindstorms Light" system. Mindstorms always existed independent of other simpler motorizations.

    I agree. A software-based system has a lot of potential, but it can easily run up against serious problems in reality. Although it's exciting that the Powered Up cables can carry both power and data, there is no stackability. Because Powered Up has specialized apps for each set, it also has an awful lot of incompatible hubs. Because Powered Up is intended to work with smartphone apps, there are a lot of features that simply can't be accessed without a compatible smartphone. Because Powered Up uses Bluetooth connectivity, it can receive signals from a greater distance, but also takes more work to set up and a lost connection shuts everything down. In short, Powered Up could have been great, but it isn't the successor to Power Functions I was hoping for.

    Well, the good news is, PV-Productions makes Converter Cables for combining both systems. Because of this, you can use the Bluetooth functionalities Powered UP Smarthubs and still keep the stackable cables from Power Functions.

    • @Unbrickme

      True but then you lose control of the internal rotation sensor. It is still incredibly useful for cases like a dual motor drive, which with the converter cables would take up just 1 port, freeing up an extra port on the hub. Without the cables a dual motor drive would take up 2 ports.

    Hey man I've been checking out your videos, you make some great stuff. I was extremely skeptical about Powered Up when it first came out and I believe Lego could have done a better marketing job with it's debut, but after buying the off-road buggy this week I've changed my mind. I'm really looking forward to taking this buggy apart and doing all kinds of crazy experiments on my channel. I think the hub is too expensive though, especially for someone looking to buy it individually and not in a set. Hopefully we'll see some sort of Powered Up kit box with price reduction (like the old Power Functions motor set).

Also, yes while you can store one python program at a time, it’s not something that lego offers natively. And I have a question for you. What does PUP stand for? Yep, lego doesn't offer it natively for now. But I think that it should not be forgot because it's really awesome (and it solves the "not enough hubs for lights" problem if you don't care about the price). There should be an update for the PUP app this year to include similar functionality.

    I feel like both systems should exist next to one another although I can understand why LEGO discontinued Power Functions. People tend to prefer what they know and having both Power Functions and Powered Up exist next to one another might limit sales of the latter. In addition, it may be that we still have to get used to the new system. But still I think Power Functions will always outshine sets where less complicated rotations are sufficient. And there are a lot of good sets that meet that requirement out there. Let's not forget about the price tags.

IF they dont loss a lot of power that way, it could be nice option to use good wifi app with mold king motors for example? (just using lego serco, as mould king dont have proportional servo)
    do you think its possible to do it that way?
    And plus of this configuration is mold king motors are cheaper, and you can link controllbrick 2 app with control+ and use xbox pad or sony pad for steering?

  • @Moonstalker
    @Moonstalker ปีที่แล้ว

    I personally would have preferred a middleground about the system.
    I mean I'm not against the use of apps, because well some people made unofficial app controlled hubs for legos like buwizz.
    However it used the original PF system which retains the whole stackable system.
    Also things to be considered, having programmable hubs was something that lego already did in the past with technic.
    But to me I think they should have used the same plugs instead of going towards a different plug and leave PF with some stuff like getting basic RC controls. while getting also more advanced sets with the new system.
    I'm pretty sure this could have been a major upgrade and keep people happy.
    Also I believe that they could introduce various switches and a new customizable remote with 6 controllable motors by default, and with the possibility to add on new controls.
    They can make a hub with BT as a either an inset system or somthing that we have to buy if we want to replace our control system.
    But I don't know it's a weird decision they took here.

    Why you didint notice such moments as: PF - iR remote which almost not working on sunlight, range of PF - is about 10 meters, you have to point to receiver, one pf hub 1 remote, you need to buy more hubs with more remotes, stucking a lot of motors on 1 channels will not give you adavantages, cause they will be controlled all at once, PUP working range can be 100 meters, you can set in app special function on each channel, proportional control, you can turn or giving gas very slowly or very fast. Not available on PF only full power or 0 power. If you dont like controling your set from smartphone you can use controller from train set... Maybe some more features. But for Me PF is really outdated system... Even PUP is outdated as for now, wish they have more ports like in new mindstorms. Also you dont need separate servo motor, all engines can be used as servo. ANd engines have tacho in them so for more advance features.

    It drives people to get the clone motors. I bought a few and realized they operate off 2.4 GHz RF instead of IR. RF is nicer in some respect because the range is much longer and it isn't line of sight. But IR is easy to hack and then use a microcontroller, like a arduuno, to decode and program. The newer clones are the powered up style and they offer all sorts of connectors and battery options. They run on RF and Bluetooth. I bought a few to see if I can hack the Bluetooth.

    I cannot objectively say what's better as I am quite new to Lego Technic and so far I am using only Power Up system with my new Volvo 6x6 hauler.
    But as a technical guy and a software engineer I can say that I feel much much much more potential from Power Up. Yes, currently there are some limitations, but I think it's only a question of time. The revolution done, now it's time for evolution. Two days ago in some video (10 things Lego needs to introduce) @Unbrickme mentioned automatic transmission or real clutch mechanism. I thing both these things could be easily introduced using PowerUp system by combination of some electronic piece together with software handling using PowerUp Hub.

    As a participant at lego technic contests, I am firmly on the side of PF. PU/C+ has a lot of potential, but at least for now, it cannot compete with PF. All the disadvantages of PF are just nuisances compared to what the PU/C+ cannot do. For beginners and non-technic people the "phone controlled creations" are hip and awesome, but in reality, they take away a lot of creativity and freedom. Yes, PU/C+ allows you to make the motor go back and forward at a certain speed and angle with your phone, but with PF you can make anything form a small city vehicle (yes, you heard me, city scale RC vehicle) to a motherfreaking huge truck with excessive amounts of motors without having to invest a lot into PU/C+ control units and a phone. PU/C+ removed some of the ingenuity, skill and creativity required to motorize functions and replaced them with an app.
    What should LEGO have done? Easy. Make a bluetooth (app controlled) alternative to the IR receiver*, with the necessary updates to the motors, lights and what not. It would have been complicated for a while, just like it was with the V2 receiver, but we would have figured it out. What LEGO has done here, is shooting themselves in the foot, and showing a middle finger to the AFOLs. We're not gonna buy the new system because it's not yet "finished" and it's expensive AF, and the PF components are becoming more and more expensive due to scarcity. Even if a second hand M motor reaches 20$ it will still be cheaper than switching over to PU/C+

      Yeah Power functions was great for making very small vehicles.I do wish powered up was much cheaper. It's very difficult now to make large creations. To take full advantage of powered up, you'd need to buy 4 hubs and 16 motors, so that's: 90*4+40*16 = 1,000 That's 1,000 dollars! Insanely expensive!!! With the power functions system it was a lot cheaper to make larger creations, and so larger creations became a lot easier to make

    I've put a lot of efforts to uncover the marvel of programming in Powered Up applications. It's much deeper than it seems. As sad as it may be Lego discontinued old good PF and sooner or later it'll sink in the past unless kept up by 3rd parties. Aliexpress presents clones of random qualitiy. :) I'm a fan of programming and I have faith in the PU electric. Software gets updated on regular basis, new hardware appears. All in all it's promising but just needs a little more brain, so to speak, to get a firm grip on it.

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely agree with you, although powered up is still incredibly limited in terms of coding. Mindstorms is much better for more advanced coding. Programming some basic feedback controllers on the powered up system always results in my phone overheating, since it essentially has to constantly send signals back and forth, instead of just storing the program on the hub itself

    • @dmitrymilyokhin2797
      @dmitrymilyokhin2797 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Unbrickme There's no contradiction in that. :) MS is for advanced coding for sure but there are not many advanced coders among Technic fans. PU has already replaced PF and people have to buy sets with PU electric anyway. It grows in numbers, while MS stays on the same level - in schools, clubs and in possession of rare advanced coders. If a person gets into PU programming the chance for him or her to advance to Mindstorms level grows as well! Compatible PU/newMS parts help greatly in that. The only drawback of this nice bright picture, as I mentioned before, is that people have to put more brain into it from the start, got initially interested in coding. That's why I walk around and praise PU so much. :) It took 13 educational videos to cover all features and tricks found in PU 3.6.0.

      @Unbrickme  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dmitrymilyokhin2797 You make fair points, and I agree that people can easily become interested in coding because of powered up. It's also much cheaper than mindstorms so its more accessible to more people. My main issue with powered up is really the coding limitations. You can't give custom names to variables and the amount of usable variables is limited. Still, powered up coding is much more advanced than was ever achievable with power functions. It's just not on the same level as mindstorms. What I really appreciate about mindstorms spike prime is that it is now possible to directly connect the spike prime hub to all lego technic creations and powered up motors. Such small motors now have internal rotation sensors (yes EV3 had the medium motor but the powered up motors are even smaller than that one)

    To be honest about the price difference of Power Functions, I think you need to consider that the product isn't current, and the prices of what remains available have increased.
    Pricing aside, I have never been a real fan of Power Functions:
    Starting with that awful connector; sure you could stack them, but you could also stack the older 9V connectors, and easily connect them into other bricks for support.
    Now you need to add an adapter cable just to use an otherwise perfectly compatible motor, pole reverser, or battery box.
    With Powered Up, there is a lot of future potential, but it seriously lacks some passive components. We need:
    The 88015 Passive Battery Box; I want some of these really bad, but they are not available in the U.S.
    Powered Up Extension cables
    Well thought-out in-line (low friction) Pole Reverser and Momentary Switches (perhaps they could be combined)
    Currently I feel stuck with Power Functions in some of the MOCs I have. I cannot make them current (no obsolete parts) with Powered Up yet.
    If I can get the 88015 Battery Box in hand, that might change.
