🎃HIKING To Downed BOMBERS & the Mystery's of Loon Lake

  • Backpacking the Loon Lake Loop near McCall Idaho. On this adventure we're following the Secesh River to Loon Lake, a stunning mountain lake in the Payette National Forest near McCall Idaho. Loon Lake is worth the trip with its beautiful hike and stunning view, but for an added bonus Loon Lake holds the skeleton of old WWII Dragon Bomber, taken down by a snowstorm in 1943. If you're able to cross the marshy bank of Loon, you can explore the bomber yourself. Going in the fall season we had the lake to ourself, giving the crash site an eerie, ghostly feeling. The perfect hike for the Halloween season!

    Wife and I were there three years ago. Got " held up " by a cow moose and a young calf maybe 50 yards from the wreckage. It took her almost an hour to decide we were no threat. Then she and her calf wondered off. Stayed in that exact camp spot from the video. At about 2 in the morning heard footsteps in the water. Another Moose walked in the shallows from west to east. Past the outlet. That woke us up. Beautiful area. Great video Awesome History!!

      Wow that's awesome! I had a similar experience around McCall a few years back. But it was at North Beach which is a pretty popular spot. Cow and calf hanging out in the marshy area near the beach. That would've been awesome seeing something out in the wild like that.

She supports what I do but when we adventure together, she doesn't feel the need to share it. She wants to live in the moment and that's why I love her. The one thing she says she'll do is make a video with me if she gets an awesome fly fishing trip out of it and a bunch of free fishing gear, so I'm working on that!

    That would be a fun trip for my son and I, since he enjoys hikes. Question though on my behalf, is the hike relatively easy?

    • @JonConti
      @JonConti  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The hike to the lake is pretty easy. We did the loop, but you can do an out and back. The trail we took back to the car that you see in the video is the trail a lot of people take. It's 4.4 miles to the lake on this trail but it's pretty easy. The hike from the beach to the plane is another mile and that's tough. It's marshy and you're climbing over stuff, under stuff, through stuff. Many people take an extra pair of shoes for it.

You may be able to access wreckage from the East side of the lake ( no trail [that we could find} in, under, around tons of blow down) We did a loop around lake. Had a really hard time crossing inlet due to water. Trail to lake is in great shape lots of Mt bikers use it.

    story of the aviators walking out makes you think about a more challenging adventure? instead of a trail hike - plotting a path using only a compass and a topo map - they still put compass in survival equipment and you did have some map lessons when you were 8 yrs old and your mother was able to do a high Sierra summer multi day hike@ 11k ELV and an a overnight winter X/C trip in the high Sierra 12K ELV

    In my view, the music ruins the beauty of the solitude. I don't hear music when I am in the mountains, except the music OF the mountains. Adding music to a great video, such as this, is like finding trash littering the landscape. I appreciate what you do, but the music made me move on. This should be seen as an opportunity to share your experience not seen as an opportunity to share your choice of music. No sub.
