  • Big Trinity Lake and the Trinity Recreation area. Big Trinity Lake near Mountain Home Idaho offers a retreat high up in Idaho’s alpine landscape. Located in the Boise National Forest there are 17 first come first serve campsites on Big Trinity Lake and there are more places to camp near the beautiful smaller lakes in Rainbow Basin. The campgrounds are located in a dense lodgepole pine forest close to the East Fork Roaring River at an elevation of 7,900 feet. Nestled among four subalpine lakes: Big Roaring River Lake, Little Roaring River Lake, Big Trinity Lake and Little Trinity Lake. The peaks of the Boise Mountains surround the area, and Trinity Mountain, the tallest in the range at 9,700 feet, is just to the south.Snow can make this area inaccessible until early July, but soon afterward, the land is blanketed by colorful summer wildflowers. This area is a haven for elk and deer, but wildlife watchers may also spot an occasional black bear or moose, like the one we found in Big Trinity Lake as soon as we arrived.

Hikers can access the 4-mile Rainbow Basin Trail System from Big Trinity Lake. Remember to take a left when you get into Big Trinity Lake and you will find the parking lot I talk about in the video. That is also the access point for the Rainbow Basin Trail System. We used this trail for a day hike to Fiddle Lake a couple miles away from Big Trinity Lake.
Anglers can fish in any of the nearby lakes for rainbow and cutthroat trout. The lakes are also ideal for exploring by canoe, kayak or stand up paddle board.
Trinity Recreation Area normally opens in mid July, and closes in mid October. Call District for updates:

Crazy to see so many people there! Went a lot when I was younger and there was never many people. Flashy lures like super dupers for the trout btw! Fly fishing in the mornings is also a great option.

The Adventures of Jon & Chad ... big trinity lake, there is a huge rock on the edge with a dead tree filled with lines and lures from the past. Many of mine are up in that tree. Go to the bank under the rock and cast... Note!! Worms and corn from a can, not sweet corn. Work the best. Trout love corn!! I’ll be up there visiting friends in September of 2020 and we are spending a night at the lake. If y’all are still in the area I’d be more than happy to show you how to catch fish there

Would this be a good starter place to camp? I’m trying to find info around beginner hiking and camping locations

Stephanie Wilkes it’s not the most difficult camping but I can think of better places to start. A place closer to civilization with better roads, less bugs, and easier to find. I’d start around Grandjean and Stanley. If you need something it’s easy to get. It’s nice to be able to go to town for breakfast, ask locals for places to hike, go swimming at the lake, things like that. Make that first camping experience super comfortable then slowly test how much discomfort is still fun!
