    The 6-cylinder B58 engine is great for the big US roads but in smaller ones like in Europe, the 4-cylinder is more than enough for most people.
    Additionally, many countries in Europe have huge taxes for 3-lt engines and that makes it even harder to own.. not to mention
    the insane gas prices of 2023 ( 2.03 US DOLLARS per liter for regular gas currently speaking )
    I think B58 engines are fantastic but are for those who want more than an A to B vehicles and who are also willing to pay more for gas and maintenance.

I believe for it to start truly making 800-900whp someone will need to make an aftermarket billet or forged Crankshaft along with a balance shaft removal kit. I'm not sure if there are any other 4 off the shelf 4 cylinder BMW Crankshafts that will be able to fit in the B48. Maybe there is one I don't know of. I own a 2016 B48 currently at 180k miles in a F30 330e. I had to replace so far, two breather/vent hard cooling lines to the engine block under the intake manifold. The oil filter housing, one of the cooling pipes that snapped during removal, radiator, water pump, water pump bracket, turbo coolant return line, and feed line o-ring. Auxiliary heater (not part of the engine but it failed because it was heating in a dry state and died in the process. No mechanical issues as of now. changed the oil every 17k-20k mile as per bmw guidance with ll04 0w30 from the dealership, now I'm using LL17fe+ 0w20 from millers oil. However because we covered so many miles in a short time we had two oil changes a year despite the high interval. It started burning 1 litre of oil every 2k-3k miles now. Good engine, unfortunately lacks the smooth running of the straight six. Loads of low end torque and generally feels effortless to drive (I do have electric motor assist though being a 330e).

    @laneanderson3005 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Genuine question. I've seen some other channels make well over 500hp in the B48 with upgraded turbos. If majority of the internals are the same, and the B58 is able to double it's horsepower, why wouldn't the B48 produce the same results (meaning doubling the horsepower). Are there other factors like block size / compression that would make the B48 not be able to withstand the same percentage results as the B58?

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are multiple aspects to doubling the power. For one, there's hp per liter. Let's use the original engines and power output rather than the TU engines as an example:
      B48B20O0 - 248hp = 124 hp/liter
      B58B30M0 - 335hp = 111.6 hp/liter
      Ultimately, the original B48's were tuned more aggressively from the factory relative to displacement. Doubling the power of each would also double the power per liter, which means the B48 would still be tuned more aggressively. The 255hp B48TU and 382hp B58TU have almost identical hp/liter.
      Outside of that, there are also inherent and very important differences between inline-4 and inline-6 engines. I6 engines are harmonically balanced and don't require a balance shaft, offer better cooling, exhaust pulses are more evenly balanced, etc. The I6 is simply a more robust engine design. In other words - even at the exact same power/liter - the B58 should be the stronger and more capable engine.

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      E - BMW recommends running LL-14 or LL-17 oils on the BMW B48 engine. The standard oil weight is 0W-20. Newer LL-14+ oils are designed with fuel economy and emissions in mind. LL-01 oils follow older standards, but it's still some of the best oil in our opinion. Ultimately, anything LL01 and above will work well on this engine.
      As far as weights, 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-20, and 5W-30 all work well on the B48. Some B48 and B58 owners even go for thicker 0W-40 and 5W-40 oils.

      Between those options, I would opt for the 5W30. However, both oils will offer the same viscosity during spirited driving since it's the second number (30) that tells you the viscosity of the oil at operating temperature. The reason for the 5W30 is that you simply don't need a thinner 0W oil (cold viscosity) in a warm climate like Florida.
      As for oil brands, we've always liked Liqui Moly but there's no perfect answer. Any major oil brand is a good choice including Mobil 1, Valvoline, Shell, Castrol, Motul, etc. As long as it meets the BMW certification they will all perform pretty closely.
      Most G-chassis BMW's use an SAE 70W-80 synthetic differential oil.

    • @8020Media

      The engines are really almost the same. The only difference is the 20i version has higher compression and different pistons and is tuned for less power. Reliability will really be almost the same, however less power is always better for longevity. You can read about the differences in our guide here: bmwtuning.co/ultimate-bmw-b48-engine-guide/

      @@8020Media Thanks for the answer! I'm looking to buy a bmw 4 gc because I fell in love with the design of the car. I am researching to see which version would be the most reliable since I want to keep the expenses at the minimum. The 440i which has the B58 which is more reliable on paper imply much more taxes unfortunately..that's why I was left with the 420i vs 430i versions. If I understand correctly the 420i would be the more reliable and durable version long term and 430i would be slightly less because of the added hp. Did I get it right?

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think either of these engines are old enough to have any significant data to give an accurate answer to that. I'd say it's a toss up. You could argue the B58 solely because the inline-6 is BMW's bread and butter, and the engine BMW probably has more knowledge and skill in manufacturing. On the contrary, more people are likely to mod the B58 so if you're buying a used example there's probably a higher chance the B58 is or has been modded in the past (which could potentially hurt longevity).

      A - We are big fans of the JB4, especially for BMW engines. We've got at least two JB4's powering our 335 and 135 currently. It is well worth it, so long as you keep up with maintenance. Can it hurt the engine/trans overtime? Short answer, yes. Anytime you increase power over stock levels, the reliability of said components get slightly weaker.

    I have a 320 b48, did a bm3 stage 1 now power output is only 5whp off my mates 330i stage 1... so you coulld say my 320 is stage 1 plus
    If all part are the same, can i not habe my 320 compression ratio adjusted to that of 330?? Even though itll only make up the 5whp difference 😂???

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are plenty of other factors that go into dyno numbers and whp. Not sure if you both measured on a dyno but two cars with the exact same engines and exact same mods dyno'ing in the exact same weather conditions will still put down slightly different numbers. 5whp is a very reasonable difference.
      With that being said your compression ratio is different because you have different pistons. Compression ratio can't be adjusted without doing some major engine modifications - you can't just tune in a lower compression ratio.
      Go drop an intake or a downpipe on it if you don't already have one and then you can get more than the 5whp you're looking for. If you don't have an intake I'd highly suggest one since you are tuned.

      @8020Media  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, that is true - I am aware of a couple that are around the 475-525whp ballpark (so probably pretty close to 600 at the crank). However, those are mostly on built engines and I suspect the ones that aren't built engines won't hold up in the long-term. Either way, I'm not quite sure what point you're trying to make. There are B58's with 1,000+whp. It's the more capable engine, and always will be.
      That said, if you're looking for a fun 350-400whp car then the B48 can be a great option with an upgraded turbo. Much over 400whp and it's probably time for a built engine - at which point you've likely spent more money than simply upgrading to a B58. Still, there are some benefits that people may appreciate like a lighter engine and less weight over the front axle for better handling, better fuel economy, etc.
