- Review of the Kent Performance Camshaft from @HitchcocksMotorcycles as fitted to my Royal Enfield Classic 350 REborn. How much power is gained? Performance tests before and after: 0-100 kmh and 60-80 kmh in third and fourth gear. Camshaft tested during1500 kms with and without passenger; in city traffic, backroads and highways; and in all kind of weather. Answers to all the usual questions: Does it teliver a noticeable bump in performance? Does the engine character change? Is it reliable? And worth it?

I will never understand people that say "Why are you modding a slow bike, just buy a stock fast one"
Those people will never understand the pleasure of improving something that you enjoy, so that you can enjoy it even more without getting something that is completely different
Bingo!
If you like the looks, rideability, mileage and throttle feel of the 350, then modding the 350 makes sense. I mean sure you can get G310R for similar price, which is 34 hp watercooled bike, and actually also has a nice relaxed throttle feel, but then you have a modern bike with the 'Wasp's head' looks, and also no low end torque anymore.
Just got mine 2 week ago. Love it and will keep it stock. Last bike was big 1100 cc Honda, but the 350 is much nicer ride. SOS , Slower Older Smarter.
"Slower, Older, Smarter" - I'll have that 😊 thanks 👍
I feel ya. My other bike is a CBR1000RR and I hardly ride it anymore
Honda's are one hell of a machine though ‼️🤌❤️🔥@@GrampsD63
My World I have the same...I had cb1100 and now classic 350 and I love it 💪 best for you.
I love the character of the RE Classic 350.
I have owned much faster bikes, faster but sterile.
I am happy to spend $'s to make it run cooler & run properly but see little value or purpose in injecting the little 350 with steroids' - after all the bike has a speed limiter wired into the ABS.
I totally understand wanting to tune a slow bike. You end up with something more unique and tailored to your taste, which can be a lot more fun than riding a Tupperware crotch rocket.
Impressive gains. My own feeling about modding bikes has been changing in recent years but I always like to see what these machines are capable of. Looks good.
Thx. What has changed?
@@MotoMorten I think visual mods are cool, but when it comes to performance changes I think it can change the character of the bike too much if you aren’t careful. Opening a restricted airbox is one thing, but I’ve had bad experiences with bikes where the previous owners threw everything they could at the machine and the performance actually suffered for it. The other problem is that I absolutely love the Classic 350 the way it is.
@@elwood62 yes. I see that an am wary of it. So far the character is not changed.
I love your ethos of this project. Happy Zen mate..............
Great job, I fully understand your satisfaction, not so for the higher performance as such, but well for the optimization, the pleasure of getting the most of it. I’d like to do the same... just need to free up some time, may be this winter 🤔 Thanks for sharing this with us. Keep on 👍
You got it 👌
Been quite a while since I've seen a reference to The Book - keep on, Brother....
Thx. My favorite 😊
Good on you dude 👍🏻
just nailed it,not only this but life in general.
Thx 🙏
As long as you get enjoyment and a sense of achievement out of it you carry on. Live how you want to live.
I’ve got my camshaft and other accessories due to arrive within the next couple of weeks, so really looking forward to the uplift in performance. If you want a bike with lots of tuning potential, you should buy a Royal Enfield 535gt Continental, it’s an awesome handling cafe racer.
The bike sounds wonderful!
well done ! waiting to see what you do next :)
Thanx. Have something planned ☺️
Kudos to you. Ditching those sophisticated electronic and replacing with pure mechanics is the most "Pirsig" style bike tweaking I have seen.
Thx 🙏
Pure mechanics is the way to go. My ‘65 Dodge Dart, slant six is proof.
I guess you guys miss the old - T Model Ford - hand cranking the engine over to start it?
Most of us are fine with turning an ignition key to start our cars & bikes. The new RE Classic 350 has all the old world looks without the headaches.
Nice mods, will keep watching for the future ones. Subscribed… Richie
Thx 😊
Just discovered your channel and I am glad I did. So peaceful with sounds of a 350. Also what kind of camera do you use?
Thx. I use a Olympus E5 MKIII and Insta 360 v3
I love that this bike is full-sized. Used to have SR400, and sold it because it was small (and vibrated a lot)
Kent were making cams for Ford cars back in the 1970's to my knowledge ( maybe earlier) .. legendary company.
Thx. Interesting 👌
I remember those days, I was wondering if the firm was named after the Ford Kent engine which if my memory from 50 years ago is correct was the engine used in the first Escort.
Love the blacked out Speedo surround, hate chromed plastic.
Thx. DIY 😅
In first moment it make no sense but... Now I understand you and waiting for next episode on your journey.
For me is 350 a small bike, still waiting 650 but if you find solution how transform 350 engine with big bore kit the next task is how to cool this new engine.
Let's make inspiration with Hondas RFVC engines... (oil cooling).
Good luck Morten👍and 🤜🤛
Thanx😊
I'm looking ot swap over an RFVC engine into my race-prepped Ascot FT500. They're still great engines
i added the kent cam a few months back, after adding the dna, decat and fuelx. it's not a different bike, but the original, more so. it takes a little while for the new configuration the bed in, but it's totally worth it. a slightly different riding style and much improved. looking forward to the big bore kit. a 450 head would be great and a route around the limiters. anyone talking about a loss of bottom end grunt are wrong in my opinion.
Quick tip - when road testing different cams - bin the music & listen to the engine's opinion : )
Thanks. Should have placed a mic at the rear. The sound from my Insta 360 up front is crap.
@@MotoMorten Yep, pillion riders usually get the best 'sound', so mic-up somewhere out the wind, under the rear of the seat perhaps? A nice project - Good luck : )
For how cheap the bike is in the first place, paying for the upgrades can’t be too much of a deterrent? I mean, if it makes you happy it’s worth it 👍🏻
Agree 💯 (obviously 😅)
“The test of the machine is the satisfaction it gives you. There isn't any other test. If the machine produces tranquility it's right. If it disturbs you it's wrong until either the machine or your mind is changed.”. From the book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
Word!
I must read the book! I've said the same thing about all sorts of machines since I was wet behind the ears. One of my favourite bikes of all time is considered a boat anchor, by many, the Yamaha xj650 and 750. They just suited me, I could ride them well. Number's are smumbers when it comes to bikes.
@@davidbrayshaw3529 yes. Do it 🙌
@@davidbrayshaw3529 I am about to get a 750 back on the road. Modified a tiny bit with paint handlebars and a cutdown batwing windscreen.
@@Matticus-mb6wl I'm sure that you'll get a heap of joy out of it. They were so easy to ride quickly "in the real world". How these things never became "classics" is beyond me. They mightn't have been the quickest 0-60 back in the day, but they were far and away the best of the mid sized Japanese fours at the time.
No need to explain, it is you bike, go nuts with it, and you can be sure that it is unique and there will be no other like it, enjoy it!
Thx. Nice words!
Exactly what I’m going to do when I get my Meteor. Have you thought about changing the front sprocket?
I totally understand and share your interest in improving performance like this. One question, do you still have a manufactures warranty after changing the cam?
Not on the engine, no.
Only thing Ive done so far is a DNA filter kit which does help throttle response .
Im going to fit a Punjab short pea shooter to improve exhaust gas flow as its got no baffles and having looked at the cat its a straight through type so only gives light restriction unlike the silencer.
Dubious about a cam change as increasing power by 30% if true means the ends, crank etc are under increased stress.
The cam should be fine combined with an oil cooler and high flow oil pump (which is likely needed for stock bike too)
Great video, very good mods too, have youvchanged the stock handle bars too,if yes kindly share details
Thanks. Yes I did. Got them off eBay. They are called Old style handlebars for Royal Enfield 😊
Makes you wonder why such a cam is not standard spec? Another enjoyable video, thank you.
Thx. Due to emissions I suppose 🙈
@@michaelmurdock4607 exactly
@@michaelmurdock4607 As we're no longer in the EU, why can't they built a 'Clubman's version with this tuning for the UK? By voting to 'leave', we seem to have lost all the benefits of 'Europe', yet kept all their nanny-state silliness! : )
@@loddude5706 Try being in California. We even have our own gasoline blends here because of emissions. I got a E-5 model here last October. It's more efficient if everyone get's the same base model worldwide for RE. Besides for about $700 US you can build your own Clubman. Easy Peasy!

The best thing for Europe to get rid of the always moaning Brits…..
This is really cool mods for this beautiful bike. However, keep in mind, more power equals more heat. I'd get an oil temperature gauge and if the oil runs over 180 i'd get an oil cooler and high flow oil pump. Or, you will have to overhaul it more frequently.
Ideal bike to test out the performance enhancers :) great looking bike and how much is the top speed now? And cheers to your experimental trials
Thx :-) Top speed is limited to 120 kmh by ECU... My changes only affect acceleration
I fitted my new cam a few months ago and like it, bit more mid range which is this bikes happy place, better up hills too, worth the money, yes i think so, dna filter fitted but had to change back to the ol cover, the modded one was way toooooo loud 😅
Hola buenos días,soy Raú,l,de Madrid.Me encantan tus vídeos Morten.
Sabes algo sobre el límite electrónico de velocidad? Es posible que sirviera la centralita de la Hunter?
Muchas gracias y un saludo¡
Very Good 👏.
Heyy... Nice video!! Where did you mount your camera and which camera is it??
Thx. Insta 360 mounted to the handlebar 😊
Sabeís sí se podría instalar la centralita de la Hunter?
Nice video, enjoyable Zen type to watch, lovely looking bike....🙂 I have a classic 500 trials l am playing around with at the moment. Royal Enfield are difficult to beat for a happy satisfying riding experience, since getting it the Harley fat boy has stayed parked in the garage.....
Agreed 🙂
Have to taken a test ride on the new standard 350 ?
Nice video! Tanks for sharing! Do u have some increase on the top speed? U know.... i got the same bike here in Brazil. My dificulty is with the hyspeed highways. So for me was very important some increase in the top speed. Is it very dificult to install? Tanks again!
It is limited by the ecu to 120 kmh, so no.
Can you do a proper exhaust note video soon? Grey curious to hear what it sounds like with the cam
Dont know if it sounds different? Maybe just a tad more peppy
Try changing the hunter 350's ecu to get 130 speed.
Hi, you indicate at the end of the video that you're thinking about a kick-start installation if exist. The day you would find it, please make a video, I'm waiting for that as well !
Will do! Such an obvious thing tho have on this bike...
Franchement je pense avoir eu de belles motos (triumph et bmw) dans ma vie mais avec cette 350 pleine de charme et de caractère, elle sera l'apojée pour fermé la boucle d'une longue histoire !!
Love the Enfield love the mods…the idea of the Enfield and the simplicity of being able to work on it like this is great! Yes people could say “why not buy a faster bike?” But that’s not the point..like you say it’s personalising it and making it yours in a mechanical rather than cosmetic fashion…which is a thing that can’t be said of most motorcycles these days
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance??? One of the most pretentious load of rubbish books I’ve ever read 😉
Why did they drop the 500cc single? That seemed to be a good size for a street engine in the US. Our driving is a bit different than England. We have trucks trying to run over you if you go too slow, so I would be hesitant to ride anything smaller!
Hi. Has there been any annoying sounds from the valves after your mods, any needs for adjusting them after your bike has been driven at more aggressive revs? Did it affect the valves at all?
Nope, but they need frequent adjusting acc to the handbook
Kickstarter would be a game changer!
I have had 2 RE 500 classics. I love the way they look, they have adequate power but, my God, the vibrations at freeway speed make your hands numb for hours after riding. I test rode a 350 classic, hoping for the best.. It is the most comfortable 2 wheeled conveyance I have ever ridden, and that includes 3 scooters, which are all about comfort. The seat, the position, the smoothness, the ergonomics..amazing. Taking the 350 up to 60mph on a test ride nearly made me weep. IF ONLY... 2 more horsepower! Well, it looks like there are solutions to the problem.
My tought exactly 👍
I don’t know why they don’t reengineer and balance the crankshaft on the 500 like they did with the 350. I’m assuming they did that. From what I’ve heard the 500 has more power, but it’s not worth knocking your brains out from the vibration. I’m considering getting the Signal classic 350, but would rather get the military style in 500 if they work it.
@@generalnguyenngocloan1700 Exactly. I would love my 500 classic if it had an engine that didn't make me pass blood in my urine. The 350 is counter balanced and is smooth.
@@generalnguyenngocloan1700I believe it is difficult to meet the emissions regulations on the 500. Also the frame is redone.
Does the Air filter increase the exhaust sound in stock silencer?
Is there any problem will occur to engine by removing catalytic converter with a decat pipe?
Can you please tell the pros and cons of your mods like
Air filter
Decat
Fuelx?
I made a separate vid on this. DNA filter gives a nice intake roar (may be confused with exhaust sound). Other than that all mentioned mods just makes it happier. Only downside is regulations.
I'm really interested in putting the Kent cam in my Meteor. I've already installed the DNA filter, the Hitchcock's de-cat conversion and the larger gearbox sprocket.
Go ahead. It works!
@@MotoMorten how has fuel consumption been affected?
@@MotoMorten looking at the Hitchcocks site, it says the camshaft is not available and no price is given
@@andrewoh1663 I don't know yet ...
What change have you witnessed with the air filter and sprocket changed? Curious cause
I'm planning to in mine. Thank you
Bore and stroke that baby! 🏍👀👍🏻
Great video👍. Where did you get the cool looking black material that surrounds your centre instrument panel?
Thx 🙏. I made the instrument panel from plexiglass and window trim from the local hardware shop 😊
Thx👍. Looks so much better modified, keep up the great classic 350 work👍👍.
Hello! This state TWO is with Air Filtre and FuelX?
Good information. Pity about the background music...
I just ordered the KENT to add to my 500cc Meteor (got the HT big bore). I am curious if in this configuration the 18% gain still hold (that would be 18% of already 20% more over stock).
Interesting. Do think it should work. Please keep me posted, and good luck!
It can't possible without change the ECU map . If every time valve set opens for slightly more to get more air then timing also needs to be changed . Only re mapped ECU can do this . Without it it's just a mind game .
Obviously not. However I will do something like that (or change for a carb) later. Looking forwards to seeing if that gives even more 🙂
Can you please name the model of the handlebar ? Is it old classic or which exact model handlebar?
There is an electronic speed limiter based on ABS system, so the bike is will not be going faster with increased power. Argentina has different fuel with more alcohol in it and thats why they have different ECU black boxes to control injection. Argentina model ECU does not have speed limiter, but here in Europe normal Hunter ECU might be easier to purchase. Just a though, for inexpensive test purpose you might try to fool the speed limiter by using tin foil to block every fifth abs hole in front wheel abs system.
True, but the limiter kicks in at 125 kmh. Even after stage 2 it takes forever to get there. Thus the accilieration is my goal (spescially from 80 onwards)
What fuel consumption do you get after these mods?
So why don't the stock bikes come with this camshaft? Did the engineers make a mistake?
If you are fitting a carburettor don’t forget to reduce the main jets by ?% for every ?thousand feet climbed. I now find I have forgotten the figures but it’s in your book. It’s at least 60 years since I read it must still have it somewhere.
Yes, thats part of the sharm. Isnt it 🙂
I would be thinking very carefully before dumping the EFI and the computer-managed mixture control because a too lean mixture in an air-cooled engine has some interesting side effects. My Triumph 250 single started melting the piston top, back in the early 1970's, when I ran it too lean (we were still using leaded fuel then). I will be watching with great interest for your reports on how the carburetor conversion goes. You may need to add some thermocouples to report the exhaust temperatures just so you know when you are heading into risky temperatures. Nice video, thanks 🙂
Thanx for your comment. I believe the ECU is already running it lean. Specially at high rpms where the fuel x is not working. With a carb I can tune it to be richer and not be second guessed by a computer...?
I might put the DNA filter on my Bullet 500. It has a Hitchcock pipe, Dunlop K70s, and I just put the Halcyon bar end mirrors on it.
Sounds like a good idea!
Since 2005 I have a pre unit Bullet 4 speed kickstart. I planned to pimp it this year with big bore, new crankshaft and bigger valves. In a moment of clearness, I bought a Hunter for the about 4000€ the upgrade of the Bullet would have cost. The 350 is such a cultivated machine! Nevertheless, an upgrade to about 25 HP would be nice. I wonder what performance the cam would bring together with chiptuning, but without touching exhaust and airfilter?
Cam, filter and exhaust will get you to 25 hp and a much livelier machine 👍
@@MotoMorten Mabe, but I would not touch exhaust and filter. Too dangerous in Germany, too visible.
Good thing you didn't modify the old pre unit Bullet. Keep it as original as possible and cherish it. They are getting as rare as hen's teeth here in India. Most of them have been scrapped. But the old thumper had a lovely beat and was a pleasure to tool around at low speeds. Definitely not built for speed.by the way, I have a Hunter too. Great bike.
What about vibrations? Did you notice increase in cruising speed limit/the sweet spot?
No. Not at all.
Will the handlebar that you have changed will be comfortable for medium length arms? As you have mentioned that you have long arms so you have changed it,i wanna change the handler can you please reply?
Sure if you wish to sit a bit more forwards
Should I do tune up to my 1 year old HONDA CB350 RS ??
The stock produces 20hp. How much power did you gain over that 20hp after installing the new cam?
5-6 hp
Just found this. A bit late I know. Curious what carburetor did you use on the bike? Did you have to custom fabricate the intake for it to fit? Did you eliminate the computer too?
I didn't. It is just on my wish list. As far as I know there is no solution on the market so far ...
Is your over all top speed increased?
So, the dyno chart you showed says that it's a completely stock 350 vs a 350 with not only the new camshaft, but also a new air filter and decat pipe. Did you add those to your bike as well or was it just the camshaft?
Yes. All of it 😁
@@MotoMorten So how do we know the camshaft actually had any effect, and all the performance increase wasn't due to the new filter and decat?
@@DarkElfDivafilter and decat was installed before the first test, thus only change was the cam. Sorry if I misunderstood you.
@@MotoMorten That is not what the dyno chart says, It says "unmodified stock bike."
Cool. About as fast as my 2013 Mazda 3 1.3L
Have you noticed a change in fuel economy after installing the cam? That's one area I don't see a lot of talk about with this mod!
No, but I have not checked either.
Muito bom o vídeo. Só tem que tirar essa musiquinha de fundo e deixar o ronco do motor
Certainly sounds how a real 350-single should . Dave nz
Did your Before-After comparison include all the other mods (air filter, muffler etc.) or not?
No. Only compared to stage 1. Would be fun to run it against a stock one. I think stage one added about 3-5 % gain.
@@MotoMorten considering installing FuelX Pro only, but I’m not sure about the overall effect
@@DC3AFA maybe some. The engine runs a little lean without.
Does it ride better on highways?
I applaud you for what you have done. But why if the bike still has the speed limiter?
It does. To get rid of that the ECU must be replaced (ie with a carb). However I find 125 kmh sufficient. It is the accelleration that I want to improve (spescially from 80 onwards)
Yes I understand where you are coming from. But here in America a bike that max's out at about 72 isn't even functional. I test road one, loved it, had the $ in my pocket. But if I can't cruise at 75 and pass trucks etc. Then there is no reason to own one. Why they didn't make a new more modern 500cc bullet I will never know. I'm waiting for the new BSA Goldstar. The Rotax motor can do it all. @@MotoMorten
I have one. My question is the i ternals can handle more power? Hand for rhis mods you make in this video what is the total cost?
Seems like the bike is overengineered and can handle much more power. As for cost, I quit counting ...
@MotoMorten Sounds good for performance increase. About the stop count, the cost of mods, if it is not for business, is better this way. Kkkk
Was these speed tests done with a 16t sprocket fitted ?
Nope. Std 15t front and 42t rear
Does the mileage drop with this upgrade
What does it do to the top speed? Maybe with a sprocket change.
The classic 350 is speed limited to just under 75mph, changing engine power or gearing doesn’t change this
which camera did you use here?
Insta 360x3
if this bike made 30bhp id own one...... its way underpowered in todays world...even 30bhp would not be stressing this bike
Agreed 👍
Good vid but I can’t hear the motor for the music!
Sorry. The sound from my insta360 mounted up front was to crappy. Next time I will mount a mic at the rear of the bike.
That would be a nice mod for my hunter 350, but a bit too much to do.
I think what you have done is great! My concern with a big bore kit is unlike the cam it will alter the character in a much more substantial way due to the nature of a single cylinder thumper. They have found a real balance with the 349cc but with a bigger sleeve / jug and piston your going to get vibrations that the current counter balanced wont be able offset. So you will be trading that butter smooth feel for power. It will definitely be a trade off. Just something to consider
Thx. Those are important things to concider. I am ver happy with the bike now, so I am not sure. Maybe work on the efi vs carburettor first...
@@MotoMorten that sounds really interesting. I hope you’ll update on TH-cam if you do! I’m looking at buying one of these 350s in the spring. I’m in Texas and they would be perfect for the farm and country roads I live around. I’ve grown weary of highway riding in the Dallas Fort Worth metro area due to crazy drivers lol so I sold my sportster.
I don't think the music fits the Royal (Z)Enfield vibe but very informative vid.
Sorry. Messed up the mic recording engine sound. Will do better next time.
Yes, they have to be tuned.
any way we could dampen the steering vibrations
If its the new 350 it shouldn't vibrate much. The older ones do. Singles are vibrant 😉
But opening a brand new engine to change such a vital part like a Cam would be a no go to me. Also, there is no garantee of longevity compared to stock motor...
That is a valid point. I think the engine is quite overdimensioned and will handle it well. But ofcourse, warranty is voided 🙈
@@MotoMortenabsolutely right - this is a 350, with very conservative restrictions and ‘only’ 20bhp. Its ridiculously over engineered for the standard level of performance it gives and will be designed with a load of contingency. The Kent cam also seems to be a ‘mild’ upgrade to fit in with the ecu restrictions, so it’s a real low risk mod in my engineering view.
Great to see some real experience of this #MotoMorten - this is on my list of mods to do to my 350. And look forward to the carb/big bore journey!! 👍
Changing to a kick starter?? You can do that? For me the new cam wouldn't help. With the poor state of the roads around here means my bike spends most of its time between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm where the benefits of the cam are negligible. (I fitted a rev counter in place of the tripper) However I am going to buy the free flow de-cat exhaust from Hitchcocks because it is about half the weight of the standard system. Anything that reduces the weight is going to improve performance across the rev range.
True. Kick starter kit is not available,
do the measures comply with the EU5 standard and are the modifications registered?
Nice modifications. I wish I could do them too. But here in Germany all of them are illegal :-(
How would they know?
@@jeremyatkinson4976
That same question occurred to me as well. 👍
The increased noise level with the DNA filter already enough for the cops to stop you. Ask me how I know ;-(
Only if you get caught😂
It would be interesting to see what difference just the cam on it’s own makes?
What is the Top speed you are getting after installing this.?
Top speed is electronically limited to 120 kmh. Thus upgrade only affects accelleration
Did you see a dip in gas mileage though?
👍👍👌👌🙏🙏
Thx 🙏
I know the new bikes are super reliable but it's a shame that they went for saving money (?Making Money?) by not having a kick starter on these lovely machines.
Agree 100%
