At 28:53, Orange decided not to build 2 roads at 4 brick and 911 for the win, but decided to be a gentleman and wait for everyone to be at 9 for the grand finale. And so he decided to port his winning woods and bricks for a chance for a dev.
After the Sheep mono you pooped twice. Got your 3rd knight and then a VP. I was thinking after you secured Army to secure 3-1 port, but always difficult to see getting plowed. You knew it was coming. Thank you for another great video!
Damn nice work on blue's part, Dandy was so close to the win on his prior turn...literally one card short (a brick or sheep was gg). Once the plow to the 3:1 happened it was inevitable that he'd choke on wheat and 7 out a lot more often like he did, that probably did seal his fate.

nop, but maybe could have tried trading to get an extra brick or a sheep... maybe they would have not trade him a sheep but with one extra brick he could have ported it. ... then as you say roadbuild to drop another setlement
I think in this special set up you need to trade more often 4:1 before you end your turn. Otherwise you lose to the seven. There were so many rounds you had just wheed and sheep. You are getting it almost every turn
I don't understand why everyone is hating on Danny's choices so much. Dandy has commented the rational behind the sheep mono, the dev instead of dropping a road to the 3:1, risky trades and devs instead of a city. They all make sense. And despite all of the "game ending bad decisions" Dandy still managed to be extremely close to winning multiple times and with really good odds of winning. You cant judge the quality of decision making by the outcomes. For example, everyone knows that gambling in the lotto is bad idea but someone actually winning doesn't suddenly make the lotto a good decision. It's still a poor decision that just happened to work out really well. Just let the man enjoy his game. Thank you Dandy for the good content! P.s. I wonder if Dandys decision making could potentially be why he is a very high level and top ranked catan player 🤔 P.s.s. I would have loved to seen Dandy cut blues roads for the win and for Orange to lose on 11 vps!
Ripping the sheep allowed me to control the development cards on the board and secure army right there. I don’t mind clearly the sheep in that situation to stop the board from popping. If I knew orange was going to roll into perfect 2 roads to plow me, I would have handled that situation differently but hindsight is a thing.

Dandy, there is just one thing that I have noticed about you. Dylan does the same thing. Both of you play too risky when it comes to dropping roads. You used mono on sheep and went for two devs instead of one dev and one road to secure your MOST important spot. It was simply a bad choice. You play great though, you really are one of the best players. Just that one thing, not being worried you might get plowed. I have seen it multiple times happen to you and Dylan, even you guys playing together, you didn't get plowed there though. I have watched all your vids and your content is amazing.

With the nature of a game like Catan, it’s impossible to have everyone agree with all the plays you make and I certainly don’t claim to be mistake-free, even while playing at the highest levels. This topic brings up a very interesting conversation about risk and reward because I think there are times you have to take calculated risk to get the most out of the situation. Considering orange had no cards after my 2 pops, the only way I get plowed that orbit is 2 very specific rolls back to back and it happened (4 into 8). So the question is… What is more likely? I survive and get a brick to drop the road (potentially even extort with my knight if needed) or he rolls perfect rolls in 2 turns to plow me? In that sense, it’s a fair calculation that is heavily in my favor and why I decided to maximize my sheep into devs. Good players understand the importance of taking risks when it usually leans in their favor. It’s easy to call out a decision when it goes wrong like the plow but most of the good calls we make usually go unnoticed because it seemingly “just happened”. We know we played the odds in our favor in those situations and it didn’t just happened by mistake. All the best! 😎
After rewatching that part I think you indeed made the better play. It was just a very unfortunate thing. The chance is indeed less than 1/36 of him rolling exactly what he needed. Always a fun scenario. A player can only win on his/her turn. So if I settle for 10, I win even if I give road to another player at 10 points. It’s rare but it happens from time to time.

I cant believe you had 2 rolls to hit a 3/6/8/10/11 and you didnt hit it. Also instead of buying 3 devs there, i think you shouod have bought 2 and kept the last sheep. You had the road builder and keeping that last sheep was critical to your win condition.
Good catch! If I know black is going to knight and block orange, I need to make sure he has a card in hand to steal. If I take the one card from orange and then black plays knight, then I am the one who gets robbed!
@@leonardhui2657If you think of it as a decision tree of possible moves, the optimal play is to rob black because if I don’t, then I am guaranteed to lose a card. So pissing him off or not, it doesn’t really change much in that way.

Like wouldnt it be better to think "how do I lose this game here" rather than think the odds of it happening are low? Which I agree they are low and it was very unlucky that those exact rolls happened, its more im asking whether you had the wrong mindset in that moment. Also kind of a side question but do you think you would have made the same play in a tournament match against top players? Or would you have made the more careful play of securing the port?

Extremely poor use of the Mono at 12:30 IMHO. Monos, YOP...etc should be used to achieve difficult objectives, or defensively in the event of near win. Choosing to mono sheep, then just porting it away for 2 devs is poor play, especially on a low ore board. If going to Mono the sheep, then much better to secure the 5 wood 3:1 spot, or get a city. Super cringey to hear the complaint about being ploughed immediately after. This was the moment I knew you were going to lose.
The deck was still viable with RBs, monos, and multiple VPs when I popped 3 times. Also pulling VPs means there are less for others to snag so there is some defensive value if you grab the right cards. I was playing for this higher reward/risk line and it didn’t work time.

Yep, iirc the rule is you have to claim the win on your turn. Orange couldn't win until they got the dice again.
Orange would actually lose at 11 vp 😂 ; dandy could have persuaded him to give the resources to do it

This is the first game of Dandy's that I knew he was gonna lose 😢. He was playing like a gambler lol super entertaining though!
Remember - Those who are having fun have at least a .5+ point advantage. I enjoyed taking some more riskier lines but the 7 was crushing me :(

The trade at 9:49 was very good from an EV perspective. +2 cards -4(1/6)= +4/3 cards in the long run.
I love how you frame it in terms of EV. Catan is very similar to poker from a calculating probability standpoint.

Drew the mono on the sheep was really just a bad YOP. Why not wait and get a juicy ore mono?

with that mono you shouldn't have done that 2nd pop, could've taken a brick to secure the port
