  • Oil sludge in the Toyota 3.0-liter V6 1MZ-FE can be attributed to ineffective air-oil separator in the valve cover. The valve cover from the 3.3-liter 3MZ-FE is a direct fit and can help to prevent oil sludge.
    Vehicles affected include Toyota Camry, Highlander, Sienna, Avalon, Lexus RX300. ES300.

    Great video! I always wondered why the 3MZ didn't sludge as much and I've not seen any explanation yet. So, I take it Toyota never put out reason for the sludging in the 1MZ?
    What would you suggest to remove existing heavy sludge in a 1MZ? I understand about changing to a 3MZ valve cover, but would that actually help with removing existing sludge in the engine?
    Have you found that those oil treatments with detergents work, or once there's heavy sludge is it too far gone for oil treatments?
    As always, thanks for the great content!

      Be careful with sludge. It can drop down into the oil pan and clog up the oil pump pickup. If you do anything that dislodges sludge, you should remove the oil pan and dump out the sludge and clean the pickup. I've shown this in another video.

    I have 2006 Camry with the 3.0L V-6 (1MZ-FE) that I bought used a few months back. It has 150K miles and I'm going to assume nothing was replaced and/or minimal maintenance was performed. Don't suppose anyone happens to know the part numbers for the 3MZ-FE valve covers (OR) the years they where used? This is my first Toyota so I'm not familiar with all the in's-n-out's of the engine models. I'm sure things are gummed up in the engine. However, after I get the engine cleaned up (whatever that maybe) I'd like to try incorporating the valve cover swap out as preventive maintenance for this vehicle going forward.

      11202-0A051 front valve cover, 11201-0A060 rear valve cover for 3mzfe.
      It's only a direct fit if your 1mzfe has VVT-i. You can see if it does or does not by looking at the area around the oil cap. If you have a non VVT-i 1mz, the improved 3mz valve cover will not fit.

    You failed to mention the Avalon i have that includes the 3L 1mz also . Ive never even removed the plastic cover to see the engine , but the car just turned 70k mi and i use only synthetic 5w30 pens oil every 4k mi . I doubt its slugged up inside as the oil looks very clean when i remove it .
    I remember removing the valley cover on that first 49 331ci cad engine with well over 100g mi , and the black sludge was completely filled to the cover . I trouled it out --lol . I rebuilt the engine and installed it in a 19ft runabout . It ran beautiful for several years , THEN i removed it and installed a dual quad 392ci hemi from an Imperial cause i wanted excitement . You wanna see a rooster tail and 15 skiiers !!? What a great life us engine enthusiests lead -- lol !! Have a great day .

    If the front covers are the same between the 1MZ and 3MZ, I'll assume there's no advantage to change those. Are ALL (Years) 3MZ rear covers compatible with 1MZ engines (assuming theyre both VVT-i) ? Thanks,

    I'm doing valve cover gaskets and realised the inside of my baffles are sludged up. Think it's a good idea to drill into the rivets remove the baffles, clean them up and tac weld them back on? Or is there a gasket in between them. Interested to know tour thoughts cheers

    Easy,change your oil every 5000 kilometres or as soon as it starts to go from a golden honey colour to that dark brown colour. My 2005 Camry v6 oil stays a golden honey colour between oil changes,doesn’t use any fluids,is one of the most reliable engines ever made.

    Hi Frank, do you have a video on how to remove the intake thing just under the manifold? (1:14 in this video, it has the blue tape on it.) It's already off in your Head Gasket video. Thanks again.

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      You're asking about the Lower Intake. It has bolts and two studs all around its periphery. They are all 12mm hex. Just unfasten the bolts and the two nuts. You also have to remove the water inlet on the timing belt side.

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Probably I covered this in one of the knock sensor videos, because this lower intake has to come off when you service the knock sensors. Also, I may have covered it in the thermostat housing video, because, again, the intake has to come off to service the thermostat housing.

      Vvt does not fit non vvt but maybe a newer cleaner valve cover would help or maybe you can remove the baffle for the air oil separator and clean underneath where the oil pools up and the rivet it back or screw it back together.

My 96 Camry has over 400k miles on it and ZERO sludge, does not burn an ounce of oil between oil changes, - which BTW I do every 4000 miles since I use full synthetic, there is no other reason for it to happen other than what I just told you!
