      *Scotty, i have a question.* I have a Cadillac cimarron with the two liter inline 4. It's got only 98k original miles. The previous owner couldn't tell what sort of oil the engine has been using. I changed the oil as soon as i got it and put in 15w40 semi-synthetic SN. Is it OK to run this engine on full synthetic or what is the explanation and logic behind this? THANK YOU!

    • @justacinnamonbun8658
      @justacinnamonbun8658 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Giovanni Laux Wow, you have a Cimarron?? Don't see those too often. I don't know about Scotty but I would use conventional or a blend, don't know if a full synthetic would do any good if you don't know the oil change history, this is an 80s car and as such, if it has the original seals which I'm assuming it does, they're probably brittle by now. Using a full synthetic might be a bad idea. I don't even know if I you can get 15W-40 in full synthetic. Never looked for it.

      I actually got one of these a few days ago on a used car I just bought. The used car dealer overfilled the engine oil big time and they used conventional. One night coming home I decided to floor the car and it went in to limp mode. I bought MAF cleaner but I was worried about the engine oil being so full so I got it changed + an engine clean at Valvoline. Car only has 40k miles but I want it to last 400k.

    • @matlock8314

      Unless a hole is going to be made in the engine after a flush, what's the risk other than preparing to bear the cost to replace seals and gaskets? Replacing the engine? Even then, is that such a bad idea if you plan to keep the vehicle? Will the engine keep running with the build-up inside? Or the recommendation is to replace the engine or buy a newer car when it breaks down.

    I have never had a want or need to buy a brand new car. So I've always bought used cars, trucks and first thing I've always done is engine flush/oil change besides all fluids and tune up. People aren't exactly truthful about what they've done to take care of thier vehicles especially when selling. I do it so I personally know what has been done and hasn't left me stranded yet. Great content, as usual, Scotty. In this particular case I disagree with the generalization. I purchased more cars with maintenance neglect issues, then I like to admit. By trial and error I found out, for myself, that an initial engine flush, right after purchase in adition to air intake clean not only improved the overall performance of those cars measurably, but in many cases also quitened the engine noise conciderably. Additionally changing ALL fluids in the car has lately becoming rather the norm for me. Sidenote: most cars I bought where between 6 and 12 years old diesel, regularly used with an average between 100k and 150 k miles.

    If your engine is over 200000 miles, leave it alone and just change the oil and filter every 3/4k miles, Scotty's right about the seals.
    If your engine is below than 200000 miles and changing oil and filter regularly, you don't need a flush in the first place.
    Only flush your engine if it's below 150000 miles and has doubts that the previous owner didn't really care about changing oil regularly.

    Best way to clean engine internals if you are in doubt:
    Change the oil and the filter, drive around for 1000 km and do another oil change. This won't cost that much more than a bottle of flushing agent and won't harm your engine.
    Best way to keep your engine internals clean: do proper servicing with high quality oil and shorten the drain intervals just to be on the safe side.

    • @KingOath
      @KingOath 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tristen Dragon Exactly, but even then, if it’s only going to be used for a thousand miles as a flushing oil, you don’t need to buy the good quality oil you’d normally use. Just wait until your auto store has a big sale on and buy a heap of the cheapest crap they have. It doesn’t really even need to be diesel oil.
      A trick my old man used to do was to keep the old used engine oil from his motorcycles for this purpose, if you have a modern sportbike or similar and you’re using high grade full syn and changing it regularly like you should in a high performance machine, the oil that comes out really isn’t anywhere near the end of it’s use by date on oil changes. On a newer bike engine it’s often barely dirty at all and perfectly fine to use as a flushing oil in your car or to re-use in your lawn mower 😁

    I bought a car with 100,000 miles on it and looking in the valve cover it looked very clean. After about an year the oil pressure would wave all over the place and sometimes would drop to zero with no engine clatter. I added about a pint of MMO and drove it a couple a thousend miles. For a while the oil pressure would wave around and then became steady. Changed the oil and no more oil pressure problems since and no leaks or smokes and does not use oil. I did not want to pull the pan to clean the pick up screen.

      Flushing an engine is a corrective measure. I think Scotty is saying that if you change the oil regularly, you should NOT flush your engine, since you're taking preventive measures. There are preventive flush products, weaker, usually used between oil changes.
      Tip: heard a time ago that these oil detergents get "activated" on highway conditions (low torque, high rotation). Just ride on a highway for an hour or two then drain the oil WHILE warm from the travel, when the sludge is on liquid state. Its a natural flush.

      @@ItsSerialBoX Yes but the problem with thóse engines is the recommendations from the factory due to enviromental regulations which prescribes an oil change every 19000 miles. @@saultube44 No, not at all, smaller motors that run turbo's that get driven short distances where the oil doesn't properly get warmed up or cooled down enough before the motor gets shut off is where you see oil start to really break down. Great video Scotty! I've been religious about changing the oil in my VW Passat, and now it's up to 102k miles and still hasn't burned a drop. One thing I've wondered about though, is, should I change the transmission fluid in it? It's a 5 speed manual, and still shifts fine, and the clutch doesn't slip. The dealer told me it was a "lifetime fill" and I said "Define lifetime." I keep cars until the chassis rusts out. Judging by how this car is built, I'm hoping to get at least 500k out of it. Averaging 33k a year and so far it's been great!

    • @saultube44
      @saultube44 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Lifetime means: use it until you break it, then buy from me a new one, don't maintain it, because it inconvenience my business; I don't care about your economy, I care about my greedy bonuses.
      Change it every 55K miles, I suggest

    • @heidis8713
      @heidis8713 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The transmission fluid lasts the lifetime of the transmission. The lifetime of the transmission will be greatly reduced if you don't change out worn / dirty fluid. So, really, any fluid could be "lifetime fluid". Pour some pancake batter in there, and a week later, when your transmission falls out the bottom of your car, it could be said that the batter lasted the lifetime of the transmission. What I'm trying to say is I don't believe them. Change your fluid regularly. Or at least drain a little out to check it.

      Most manufacturers advise you to change the mtf after 100k miles, 75w90 is cheaper than a gearbox.
      Also you probably think it shifts smooth because you've psychologically adapted to it.
      My shocks kept deteriorating but i kept putting it off because i thought they weren't too bad, when i got to put new shocks in, the ride quality was simply night and day, and i realized how I'd been tricking myself into thinking that it wasn't so bad.

    Add a little Marvel Mystery Oil to your engine.. Or add a little automatic transmission fluid to the engine oil.. It will clean the engine slowly and you won't have any sludge issues. 👍.
    I had a customer bring their 1998 Infiniti QX4 in because the valve lifters were ticking.. I checked the oil and it was black and sludged up. Customer didn't change the oil. So it wasn't under warrenty. I checked thel cap, sludge. Looked into the valve cover and a ton of sludge in the engine. I informed the customer that i can try something for $200 bucks plus oil or I could replace the engine. Customer agreed to the $200 option. I drained the oil put automatic transmission fluid in the engine. Drove the truck around and changed the fluid and filter. I did that 3 times. 2 hours later engine was clean as a whistle, lifters stopped ticking. No smoke or leaks from the engine afterwards. I still have this person as my customer. I did that for him 18 years ago. 👍.

    I agree with most of what you said in your video. I have used aftermarket engine flush (or diesel / kerosene) on a couple of old engines in the past but these had been sitting for years and the oil wasn't reaching the lifters because of sludge. I found that I had to do it a couple of times before it worked but as you noted, you're taking a chance at developing other problems like leaks or burning oil. I do know a few people that do this regularly (every 20K miles) and swear by it since prevents sludge build up and lessens the likely hood of developing the other unintended problems but I'm not sold on it. IMHO changing your oil every 5K miles or so is all that is needed

    • @warthunder8624
      @warthunder8624 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are not developing other problems the problems are already in there you just expose them with the flush, if the engine's internals and the seals are worn out they are going to break down eventually.

    couldn't agree more with Scotty about flushes and no matter how warm you get the engine or how long you leave it draining there will always be dirty old oil left inside the oil pump, oil galleries, turbocharger, laying in the cylinder head, hydraulics and in the sump. I change the oil and filter asap every time I buy a car and then again after 500 miles to be sure its clean. its amazing how cheaply you can buy oil in 20 litre drums too.

    Hi Scotty, you are amazing, thank you for sharing your knowledge on auto repair, I learned a lot following your videos and advice but in this matter I disagree of not flushing the engine. I have a 2011 Buick Lacrosse CXL 3.6 liter engine, I had 7 check engine codes pop up, went to auto zone the kind lady behind the counter said do yourself a favor get a new car because it will cost you an arm and a leg to do the repairs, went to the dealership I'm not sure if they quoted me $9,700 something or $11,700 something. Scotty I gave my cousin who is a mechanic a call and he recommended that I flush the engine before getting rid of the car or paying a shop the arm and a leg lol. Scotty I flushed the engine, changed the oil and started the car believe it or not the check engine light went away and went back to auto the zone and no codes whatsoever, it's been now over 6 months and thousands of miles driven, the car runs excellent when idle rpm is less than 600, please share any knowledge on how this flush saved my car, you are a hero in my book, God Bless You for all you do.

    Sadly from personal experience, I can attest to this video. I ran seafoam through the oil and did the intake treatment on two of my older vehicles. My car started ticking in the engine and leaking oil from the valve covers on top of my spark plugs. The truck simply started leaking oil, which it had never done before. Yes, after initial treatment, the vehicle ran better, which is why I did the other, but within 6 months, I had issues with both. With higher mileage cars, leave well enough alone until there is an actual problem! Also, screw seafom except for gas treatment and specific purposes. I wish I had that minor gunk build up back now!

    It really depends on how much sludge and varnish are built up in the engine. And the type of flush.
    Detergents and dispersants get used up or depleted. All engines get sludged up if the owner does not change the oil regularly.
    My advise: Always follow a flush with a short oil change cycle, like 1000 miles. And again, the type of flush or cleaner is a factor. Then keep the oil clean.

    • @tarquineous
      @tarquineous 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@saultube44 : I would suggest every 60K miles. And I would run the new motor oil for 1000 to 1200 miles. This will wash down tough deposits that the flush has softened. This is a good time to run High Mileage motor oil during the 1000 to 1200 mile interval. The High Mileage oil will also condition the seals on the crankshaft and valve stems.

    Another interesting video concerning a debatable topic. I enjoyed the history of detergent oils segment. I have flushed my engine oil regularly, be it a newer engine with lower miles (Acura Integra 130,000) or an older engine with 250,000 miles (Volvo 940). I also strictly adhere to a 3000 mile oil change schedule no matter the oil type, be it conventional or synthetic. A clean engine tends to be a happy engine in my experience. I have also flushed abused engines with high miles (Lexus LS 400 181,000) without any major problems. I think it goes without saying that higher mileage engines tend to leak more for a variety of reasons and I would personally rather rely on knowing if it leaks based on a flush, than hoping that sludge will cure a bad seal. The real lesson of the video is to change your oil regularly to avoid sludge buildup.

    • @utakatikmobil
      @utakatikmobil 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      have to agree with you. i regularly change my engine oil every 5000km or 3000miles. because i've seen many engines collect sludges with oil change every 10.000km interval, which is the book recommendation. well it sounds short, but i know between heavy traffic in city driving and commonplace full-synthetic oil, 5000km is what i preferred. not sure about those high-end engine oils which promise twice the mileage and of course twice the price. i'd rather change twice just to be on the safe and clean side.
