  • Turns out Snowpiercer's ending isn't such a trainwreck after all - unlike the editing required to make this video essay work! I'm sincerely sorry it turned out looking like this but this was the only way I could figure out for it to be released. At least it looks kind of cool in some places? Be sure to watch in high quality for best results!

    I never knew people actually thought the train represents 'society'. Like, the movie wasn't at all subtle with its intention, themes and ideas.

      People also managed to misunderstand Fight Club even though the main character repeatedly just tells you the point.

    “One can enjoy movies without looking for their deeper meaning” false I have become chronically unable to do that after learning more about literary analysis and cinematography and now I genuinely can't enjoy most movies and keep watching weird artsy stuff. My younger self would be horrified at me but I am too smug to think about that. The only way I can watch more mainstream stuff is by constantly mocking it.
    (To be clear I understood your point I'm just joking about the fact that Solaris is genuinely one of my favourite movies)

    The most similar piece of recent media I can think of would be the anime 86. It's about systemic racism, not capitalism but those two things obviously intersect and it's similar in a lot of ways. 86 has the same framing of a seemingly post-apocalyptic world, with a privileged ruling class whose privilege was justified by the crisis of this apocalypse. There are also very similar clear class distinctions and dehumanization plays a major role in the system. The system is also clearly unstable and unsustainable and a fairly central point is that the systemic racism is what's undermining everything. It even more directly mirrors the real world since the privileged and the oppressed are kept completely physically seperated and can only interact through computers that erase all relevant context and humanity. Also there are trains.
    Beyond that 86 also has trauma as a fairly central theme and deals a lot with the trauma and anger oppression causes.
    Also I just remembered that Princess Principal exists, it's actually set in a steampunk UK that was divided by a partially successful communist revolution. You really do not expect it but that show dealt with surprisingly serious themes and makes really good use of it's setting.
    Basically all of Gundam has anti-capitalist elements but you rarely see anti-capitalist revolutions but there's a lot of discussion about it, maintaining hope as a leftist is the central theme of Unicorn and IBO has a revolution but it's a peasant revolt against a feudal system. The UC timeline does contain a failed revolution which is a pretty obvious allegory to the failed German revolution.

      Nice, definitely agree with you on Gundam, very anti military industrial complex. I'll have to check out 86!

      @@SardonicSays If you like Gundam then 86 will definitely be up your alley. It somehow flew under the radar for me but it's probably the best new IP in the real robot genre since Patlabor.

    Good movie.
    Capitalism, on a train, that you seemingly can't leave, is one thing. Capitalism in a country, that you can leave anytime you wish, is completely different. Thousands of people move to different countries every year. Choosing one with a non capitalist view should be fairly easy. Why even worry about a bloody revolution? Just pack your bags 🤷

    okay, can i stop watching if I already thought the ending of Snowpiercer was good and I understood the movie to be a critique of capitalism? im gettin g bummed out thinking there exists even a single person on earth who didn't come to the same obvious conclusion

    • @Khanstant
      @Khanstant 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      alright i finished it anyway because it was on and i enjoyed imagining sitting with some dyngus who didn't get the capitalism thing and he was just radicalized after realizing it

      Okay also dud you should definitely revisit the show, it's paced different and examines the problems nad horrors of capitalism and it's power to subdue those resisting it in different ways. It's pretty good, I think snowpiercer is just a good framework for anticap stories. That said, I have a harder time watching the show because I get so worked up and my heart is constantly aching for them to destroy the system entirely, but yet the events continue, entertaining/scary as they are. The "girlboss" wilfred is a funny observation considering spoilers regarding the character.
