    By pure happenstance, my ~9 year old self borrowed IG2 from a local library some 24 years ago, and I was hooked from the get go. While I wasn't good at English, it was rudimentary enough that I could somewhat understand what was happening, and it was basically my first real introduction to sci fi as a genre instead of as an adventure (Star Wars, namely). When Stellaris released, I played that too, and much like you probably did, I kept comparing everything to how IG2 handled things. Like Deus Ex and many other games from just around the turn of the millennium, IG2 was way ahead of its time in so many aspects, and it's a damm shame that there aren't more games out there that has attempted to continue in its footsteps, or even evolve the space 4X genre at all. If nothing else, we can hope that Stellaris has inspired a new generation of game developers to expand on its ideas and concepts, so that we one day might see the genre flourish. Wishful thinking, I admit!

    Haven't finished the video yet --but, if it's not mentioned, "Hobgoblins" is another great mst3k-to-rifftrax movie that's done way better by rifftrax. That's in my "canon." It was the first one I saw live, plus they kept my favorite riff about the Wisconsin Dells in the opening credits. mst3k had to cut scenes for time plus a lot of the mst3k riffs were just your standard "shut up" jokes. The Rifftrax Hobgoblins is the definitive version.

  • @Akalos1
    @Akalos1 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Great work. One thing though, "problematic" usually just means funny. Early rifftrax was a magical time; asking whether you should remove media is abhorrent, especially ones featuring poor lowtax.

    I love the Bridget and MJ riffs, they have a mild kind of "mean girls" quality to some of them (especially towards Watson in the Sherlock Holmes movies lmao), although I also love the times when they actually seem to be getting into the movie, like Beyond Christmas. Lady Mobster is one of my favorites too, partially because my parents were big All My Children fans, so Susan Lucci was a familiar face in our house.

  • @CinnamonGrrlErin1
    @CinnamonGrrlErin1 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    My impression is that Rifftrax fans tend to be older and mostly people who were already fans, or at least aware, of MST3K. And this style of sarcastic humor just might not appeal to a broad audience. I had to give up trying to get my friends into it, because they didn't really get the point of talking over the movies, even as a joke.

      @SardonicSays thankfully this is one of the least toxic fandoms out there and the online community is decent. I've made some riffing groups on FB too. The origina idea was to kind of revive the old "Caption This" MST3K game from the SciFi Channel website, except each group has a theme. MSTKitchen, MST3Karaoke, etc.

  • @enemyv

    A brief explanation of Nick Nolte. . . He was a pretty big movie star in the 1980s, probably best known for megahit "48 Hours" with Eddie Murphy. He's had substance abuse issues his whole life, which damaged his career enough that he more or less disappeared by the end of the 1990s-- not that he ever stopped acting, but he was in very low-tier stuff. And he's one of the unfortunate guys who aged terribly, and quickly, from alcohol and drug use. So Nolte just became, somewhat randomly, Rifftrax's go-to guy when there's a dissipated or decrepit or drunk character to riff. Probably helped to make it a running gag that Mike does a funny voice impression of him. They could have used any actor whose career or life was (nearly) ruined by substance abuse. Like, say, Mickey Rourke (though if you don't know who Nolte is, you probably don't know who Mickey Rourke is, either!) That's really all the "lore" behind the constant Nolte references that you need to know! (Fwiw, Nolte did a guest shot on "Poker Face" a couple of years ago, and he was great in it. Haggard, yes, but great. So the running Rifftrax gag isn't what I'd call entirely "fair", making it seem like the guy lives in a garbage dumpster. . . )

My learning curve was immediately doing crisis (I pirated it at first then bought legit), powergaming and rolling the AI, then getting humbled and gameended by a fallen empire. Im still crap at the game, but I am better than I was.

    With some tinkering, Archimedean Dynasty is very playable with a controller and feels modern enough. It's my favourite of the series. The story and world-building is superior to the sequel IMO. The english localization is both better and worse somehow. For the curious, look up the cutscenes on youtube, they are worth a watch. Never figured out what they were thinking with that title though, it sounds kind of cool, but is just gibberish that has no relation to the game as far as I can see.

    Stellaris was the first strategy game that I actually ‘learned.’ I’d played through many games but never ‘got’ them by any means, aka Distant Worlds but just existing while it played in the background. I think it helped that I started Stellaris in the old, pre-DLC days, before everything was hyper-complicated. I remember even reading in 2016 or so that if you wanted a ‘deeper’ game to get Distant Worlds but if you wanted accessible and pretty, to get Stellaris, which is crazy looking at it now.

    I don't really think transforming Stellaris into a space total war game would be great. After all, having all thoses weapons with counters to counters and also being able to change the way your units acts makes the battles unique. It is quite literaly like a game of rock paper scissors and it makes having intel over your ennemies way more important than in most games. Its true that Stellaris lacks of ground battles. Stellaris being a game about space it kinda makes sens because players trying to create better ground vehicles and stuff would get frustrated if the ennemies spam orbital bombardment. May be adding a few buildings like giant railguns to make the planets a menace for small fleets would be fun tho.

    Stellaris was almost my first 4x, but not only did I play Civ4 when I was like 9, albeit, not knowing what I did at all, and actually is more just looking at what my dad did. I also played Red Alert 2, an RTS game was also a major part of my childhood, I was also horrendous at it ofc. Even then, when I first touched Stellaris in like 2019, I was so overwhelmed that I literally could not put anything together at all, leading me to kinda not play it unless it was with friends. Until Stellaris released the very interesting mode of letting more than one person manage a singular empire, did I finally start to learn how to properly manage my systems, how to build my ships, and so on, only because I only needed to worry about a small part of the whole system. Finally I was able to enjoy the game. I was like 60hrs in without properly being able to enjoy the game.
