- A thorough dissection of Toei Animation's 1985 anime disasterpiece 'Odin: Photon Sailer Starlight' with a particular emphasis on the Starlight itself, and how it makes no sense on any conceivable level.

Jeez!
I get the feeling Odin's showrunners thought that, hey, if an anime based on a World War II battleship could be a hit, then why not an anime based on a clipper sip from the Age of Sail?
Man, I hate it when i have too much Odeen. You get the Odeen sweats.
Uncle George and Auntie Mabel
Fainted at the breakfast table.
Let this be an awful warning
Not to do it in the morning.
Ovaltine has put them right,
Now they do it day and night;
Uncle George is hoping soon
To do it in the afternoon.
Hark the herald angels sing,
Ovaltine is damn good thing!
... Wait -- you did mean Ovaltine when you said Odeen, right?
It looks kinda goofy but then again, I love Endless Waltz, and that movie has a robot with wings, in space.
A robot with shiny white angel wings. That keep shedding shiny white angel feathers.
6 weeks to Jupiter is really an amazing time. And actually does make travel to the outer system feasible.
I'll grant you it's definitely nothing to sneeze at in conventional technology terms. But in that sequence I believe they claim to be going 3% the speed of light at one point. Which if true, should get them to Jupiter in a day. So it's really, really funny it still took them 6 weeks. I like to imagine they took in all the sights on the way there.
One would also think there would be infrastructure in Jupiter's orbit that could have investigated well within 6 weeks as well, but yeah gotta love the loose worldbuilding!
@@SardonicSays looks like the ship uses a little bit of everything from solar sails, nuclear propulsion to ion propulsion. all of them being technologies that could reach a fraction of light speed with only the sails not needing a lot of time to build up to it. then again it's not that they could hit lightspeed or stop instantly if they wanted because the Gforces from the acceleration would flatten them. which is why they'd need the alien spaceship as it would be advanced enough to have inertia canceling technology. also the device at the front of the ship is likely just a large super magnet designed to act like earths magnetic feild or a microwave emitter. the logic is exaggerated as you'd expect from a movie this old but still not as bad as star wars with weapons stated as using "laser" technology by george lucas despite almost everything clearly behaving closer to plasma.
I hate it when I psychically intuit something due to my Scandinavian heritage
I want you to know how fast I sat up when the Star Control 2 Hyperspace theme kicked in.
Hah, definitely the intent! Really enjoyed putting the music together for this.
I put more thought into my daydream stories than these people put into this silly movie.
shout out to the all the Sarahs, queens regnant in absentia by default
at least akira didnt ride a weird red bike q:
Bonus points for ascendacy music
Ha, well spotted!
To be fair none of their propulsion methods before the warp point are actually FTL. Light could get from Earth to Jupiter in under an hour.
Granted, yeah. But it's still quite the mess, eh?
The "matter intake"system IS supposed to be a type of ramjet and the "electromagnetic scrapper" (sweeper would actually be closer to the "right" idea) is the means to gather all that 'matter' in. In "reality" (aka in theory) the "sweeper" moves across an arc and it being a "laser" of some type it excites the atoms of 'matter' in front of the ship which gives them a charge and allows them to be pulled in by the "ramjet's" magnetic field. (Otherwise the mostly neutral hydrogen atoms would simply slip through the magnetic ramscoop field. See science is fun :) )
Gonna say I'd always hoped my dubbed caption copy was just a bad dub but it seems not. (Also gotta say a Captain who says you need guts not data from what it supposed to be a test run as one who worked on systems really, really hurts)
Holy crap Freelancer music, mad respect
You should watch Be Forever Yamato. You can't help but notice the audio and character designs they used from it in this movie.
Good call, I can only imagine how many corners they cut
It's not anime but STAR FLEET marionettes look like anime characters and it's from the 80s, anyway, there is also a sailing ship-spaceship in Star Fleet called The Skull. In my memory, The Skull was completely crystal, glass-like, but a quick search showed me it looks more like it's entirely comprised of a bone-like material but I could be wrong again.
so wahts new in the newyork system ? XD i hear the background sound.
Good ear! Freelancer is an eternal classic!
I have always felt alot of people behind this also did the Transformers the movie... 🤔
Also, even if it isn't that great, I always appreciat nordic influences in anime.
35:09 I mean if they had Flak cannons then I'm not even remotely surprised they won.
The ship is a TARDIS, it is larger inside than outside. 😅
A Space Battleship Yamato wannabe.
It reused character designs and audio from Be Forever Yamato.
