It's amazing to see how one person can manipulate their voice to cover so many ranges, and Geoff gives us a brilliant display of that with this song. Voice Play dropped Hoist The Colours from Pirates of the Carraben this morning. AMAZING!!!! Just so you know. We ladies love every low note Geoff does. We always anticipate every drop.
This is such a clever video. I love the “Four Geoff’s” harmonies. I think the runs are a style choice that Geoff uses. Still I listen to the harmonies for the most part. But of course the lows are spectacular. I like recent stage settings for his videos. You guys should react to VoicePlay’s newest “Hoist the Colours”. It’s an experience. Thanks for your reaction

I was with you on the beginning. I think it should’ve been simpler but the song as a whole….wow! His range is unreal. Mariah has nothing on him range wise. The new Voiceplay cover is amazing!!! Y’all gotta check it out.

Great Reaction. All Geoff's solo releases have just Geoff. He also does all the arranging, singing and video editing. As for budget, if you go back and look at his early solo work, they are well produced, but not expensive. 16 tons had props borrowed from Geoff's father. Blackbird was shot in his living room. All the props used in The Headless Horseman were again provided by his father. FYI Voice Play just dropped a spectacular version of Hoist the Colours from Pirates of the Caribbean. Jose Rosario Jr was in this one too (He joined them on My Mother Told Me) Geoff did the arrangement for this one too. Don't want to say too much, but some Geoff's low singing is very smooth. They dress up as pirates. If you thought the Vikings were tough, this crew is even tougher.

From the behind-the-scenes stuff I've seen, yeah, it's a straightforward split screen when Geoff films with his clones. He's gotten well practiced - in some videos, he will appear to be looking at one of the other singers (even though there was nobody there when he was filming).
You mentioned Misty Mountains - that is also all Geoff in various degrees of stage makeup. If it's on his channel, then he's the one singing.
I think you’re wrong about Geoff’s production budget. If you look at the description under the video it lists the credits: “arranged, produced, filmed, performed, and edited by Geoff Castellucci “. His wife Kathy acts as his production manager. The final audio mix is done by Ed Boyer, who also does the final mix for VoicePlay.
VoicePlay is similar, although the arranging, filming and editing is mostly done by Geoff and Layne and occasionally Eli. Sometimes they use a cameraman, but never more than one. Eli does most of their lighting.
So their budget is not big, they’re just multitalented and very skilled at what they do.

This was an amazing reaction. My husband was with ya on the beginning with the vocal runs in the beginning...once he got past that and went to the 4 ranges of himself, he really grew with it. Also, Home Free just released Bless The Broken Road. Fun fact about that song...a lot of people think it was originally done by the Rascall Flatts when it was originally co-written by Jeff Hanna from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and released in 1994 on their "Acoustic" album. This is the same band that did Fishin In The Dark (that Home Free also covered in a mash-up). Great reaction fellas. NGDB needs to be acknowledged for sure.

Glad to be hear with you. Take a look at their most recent video "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" which started out as a mini but ended up as a full length video thanks to Layne. It will make you delighted to be with them on this. By the way Cesar displays 2 new notes, C6 and D6. Prior to that was G#5 in Dream On.

Stylistic choices are always subject to opinion. I like the early runs, but wish his final note were more legato, rather than feeling so disconnected from the rest of the phrase. But for me, overall I find Geoff's arrangements to be consistently creative, skillfully executed and just filled with all kinds of clever details. And I'm so impressed that he (as well as the rest of the guys in VoicePlay) always do their own video work, lighting etc. Several of Geoff's early solo videos were shot by himself and his wife, Kathy, in their home, although he's progressed to doing more videos either on location (Take Me Home, Country Roads) or in a studio (Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold). Speaking of that last one, one of you said something about there being multiple people on it- sorry, nope. Geoff's solo stuff has, to date, been only his voice, and himself replicated on camera. You may be confused by the massive amount of costuming and makeup that went into Misty Mountains.
Absolutely love the song. I've always loved a good bass but the song is perfect. His rendition is priceless.
Episode 206 of 307... for some reason, I find that number coincidence really satisfying. Still, loved the video guys. I'm really enjoying your stuff. I really can't wait for you to hit Hoist the Colors from VoicePlay.

There's a fine line between commentary and wandering off on a tangent...This video drifted more into the tangent zone.
Don't feel bad about being a bit unsure about the beginning of the arrangement. The great thing about music is that it's art, which means it's subjective. If you don't like this version, try Jeremy Renner's version.
As for the video, like he said, steady cam, stable background, then using layers in the editing suite to lay each shot over each other and screen splitting. I can do it with still shots, but I've never tried with video. However, it's the same basic principle with harder logistics.
The technique Geoff uses to achieve the low notes is called subharmonics, he has videos teaching how to do it.
I know it now, but since I'm a soprano, I sound like I'm possessed lol, but I can sing almost one octave lower than my register.

He sets a camera in front of each person. Then edits them together later. When it's just him he does the cameras.
In Way Down Layne was his camera man.
In Ghost Riders In The Sky he used a green screen and two cameras. And film it himself. It was his time using a green screen on himself so he called in Eli to help him.
He films most of his videos at Pattycake Productions. Unless the scenery calls for actual scenery. As in Take Me Home Country Road. He had a camera guy walking along with him. Kathy was carrying speakers and a tablet with the music beside the camera guy. Geoff said it was super hot that day.
Did you notice when he sings not to do what I've done ,you will hear a match strike and the candle lights behind him.

I really like your reaction... I also think that sometimes Geoff has 'ornamentation' that prevents his stuff from being pop radio worthy. But I don't care. I either like it when I first hear it, or I like it after a few listens. I'm not sure that every song needs to be pitched (!) for spotify.

I'd love for you to react to the 4 Geoff videos. Also Take Me Home, Country Roads where there's five of him. In Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold (from the Hobbit) the four Geoffs are dressed and bearded differently, fitting in well with the movie's look. For comparison, and just as great, is Misty Mountains (same song) by Peter Hollens (three of him at the beginning) feat. Tim Foust. Tim is Home Free's bass and both he and Geoff end that song with breathtaking low notes.

For the video production side, it is called masking. And the way that Geoff does his videos it is not too hard because the is plenty of space between the Geoff's to mask off each section. As long as the camera doesn't move during the different takes!
Also Geoff films and edits them himself. VoicePlay also film and edit their own videos - although if they are not using a stationary camera they have someone who runs the steady-cam for them.
Geoff's version of Misty Mountains is still just 4 versions of himself - just in Dwarven costume.

At first I didn't think I would like this because he started this so low. Don't get me wrong I love a good bass. I just don't think this song in particular lends itself to such a low voice. However it did get better. That's just my opinion, and we know what opinions are worth. Also I did a little research and found out that Colin James played with Stevie Ray Vaughan in Montreal. Please check him out I think you will enjoy him.

Love you guys, I admit most of the time, I prefer the original songs for pure nostalgic reasons; That being said I love the feel of the original because I prefer the vocal slides and intensity and the keyboard. I Love Geoff, I love Geoff's talent and this is a very good cover, but overall I prefer the Animal's version/cover of this song. Thank you two for what you do, thank you for putting yourselves out there and thank you for making my day much better.

I often criticize Voiceplay and Geoff for gimmicky use of the low bass...it totally works for songs like 16 tons, Hoist the colors, If I were a rich man etc....but sometimes it just seems unnecessary and distracts from the song itself. However, there is no denying the incredible talent and range of Geoff and he has a LOT of good stuff.

While this is amazing, I think 16 tons is even better.
His use of regular items into the song is great. He does it regularly as does voiceplay. I hate the intro. Way too fussy. But then it gets so good with a catchy beat and fabulous harmonies. That intro through. Ugh.
