Heroes should be more than just gods they should be more about moral conflict and personal issues
Which comes my take of a hero i want to play involving a rockstar who's arch enemy is not a supernatural entity but a supernatural force who operates within nature entirely
Why not tell a story about nurture vs. nature in that the hero is saving himself to save others whereas the villain is centered in nature and his goal is to engulf the world in darkness because of how people treat themselves and one another

“Everybody loves a hero. People line-up for them, cheer them, scream their names and years later they’ll tell how they stood in the rain for hours just to get a glimpse of the one who taught them to hold on a second longer. I believe there’s a hero in all of us, that keeps us honest, gives us strength, makes us noble, and finally allows us to die with pride, even through something we have to be steady and give up the things we love the most, ever our dreams.”
    - May Parker, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2

A hero, for me, is someone that saves lives, no matter whose they are.
I always saw characters with the no killing rule as heroes because they stopped the villain from hurting someone without needing to resort to killing, not because it was easy but because they believed it was right.
A hero seeks to save ALL lives, both of the innocent and the guilty, so they can still live and hopefully change for the better. I believe that is why most of the heroes that are defined or originate from the trauma of someone's death prefer not to kill. This character saw someone's life taken, all the possibilities of dreams, change, feelings and memories that could be disappeared in the blink of an eye.
They may seek vengeance at first, but those who decide not to inflict the same that was inflicted to their loved ones know that life matters and people can change.

Great to see someone talking about why Heroes are important. Lately it feels like everyone is giving up on Superheroes and giving into cynicism and just bitching about the misery of the world. We need optimism and hope and Heroes represent that. Of course Heroes are not limited to DC and Marvel.
Anime, video games and films have so many great Heroes that represent virtues I respect: honour, dignity, empathy, compassion and kindness.

I think being a hero is about a willingness to sacrifice for a greater good instead of yourself.
This is why you see multiple villains lamenting their sacrifices where as the heros are content as long as their higher purpose is achieved instead of their personal one. The green goblins tech for example could have still been valuable to humanity, it just wouldn't have fulfilled his fantasy.
I choose this trait specifically because I think its a make or break trait. Anti heros often struggle with this trait as well.

Nothing boils my blood more than hearing someone in person say Superman is boring because "He defeats his enemy easily." As if they could do the same. Power and knowing how to use it are two totally different things. Power doesn't corrupt people, it just reveals what's already there. Something Superman believes in. We must return to the way of distinguishing the simple understanding of Good vs Evil, because when you trick yourself into morally grey areas you start to lose to yourself to evil.

When they mean easily they mean in the physical sense. You have to admit he is OP, even if the point is his character, people these days want a hero that is more relatable and that can struggle. The Hercules "let me throw a mountain" type of hero isn't in favor. We want mortal men, not gods.

    • @nickthepick8043
      @nickthepick8043 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

@@MALICEM12 That is true, he is OP, but those same people would look at Saitama and view him as relatable. Not untrue, but they aren't opening their minds enough in my book. Besides, Superman deals with foes stronger or on par like him all the time. But I get what you mean. The problem with relatability these days, at least to me, is that nobody wants to "crane their necks" and aspire to be better. Plus, they're the same kind of people who put Batman on a pedestal, when his stories are the same over the years.

Truly inspiring video, and I would defenitely show it to the people who always say to me that comic book heroes and their stories are mainly for children, then why are you still reading them. Because there is something bigger behind those story, they teach us important facts about life, the best of them have important moral lessons, and almost all of them are about hope and good eventually winning because his/her determination and will to never give up on fighting for the better and for others. These heroes really inspire us that we can be better even in our normal life. My favourite is Spider-Man because while he is a hero, he is also just a person like on of us readers, that making him relatable, and completly shows that we regular people can do better too, and can help the world and others. No wonder he is my favourite fictional character since I was 2 years old. Thank you for this meaningful video, and also will you make a video on Batman: The Animated Series?

As someone who was and is a fan of pop culture and mythology (mostly by pop culture) i feel ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHING how Superheroes today transformed from "nerd stuff" to be a a symbol of myth and why they inspires, why they inspire us...os like this video shows, how we just discovered (or remembered) that this are just modern myths, that they are just a pillar of humanity: stories that we hear and we learn to be better people based on the values like justice or love the myths repeat over and over again for generations...to built good people.
Thats why mostly of modern entertainment its trash...WE HAVE FORGOT WHY HEROES EXIST.
For morality...for caring about good...and truth, universal truth...not OUR truth.

Hero's are an escape, a way for our imaginations to run wild and make us believe that anything is possible, personally the MCU and just marvel movies in general give me this hopeful feeling whenever I watch them, they take me back to the days of being a happy go lucky kid without a care in the world. In star contrast to my 22 year old self who is trying to manage my crazy life with work and personal issues.
Spiderman especially if I could get a little personal here has literally saved my life when my depression almost drove me to a point of no return. He's a character that will forever be near and dear to my heart. I wanted the chance to thank Stan lee and Steve ditko but obviously due to circumstances that is no longer possible. And it's not just him, cap, iron Man, Thor, they've all played a part in me becoming who I am.
Are they fictional? Yeah but what's important is what they represent it's about the lasting impact they will have as years go by. That's why we need hero's.

    9:30-9:50 My thoughts exactly!
I think the best explanation for the nature of power comes from Dr. Erskine's description for the effects of the super-soldier serum from the MCU: "Good becomes great, bad becomes worse." If you hand somebody power and they end up going off the deep end, odds are good that they were already inclined towards that kind of behavior to begin with, it just wasn't as noticeable because it was on a much smaller scale. The only thing the power did was make them believe that they were above consequences.

Nietzsche not only spoke of how "God is dead," he also spoke of "will to power through violence". Then when a mad man in the early 20th century read his words, he believed his people--his race to be the ubermensch, and through violent "will to power" he started a genocidal crusade. Nietzsche is not an example of how heroes work.

A problem that has only gotten worse since his time, it's one thing to complain it's another to offer a solution. What is your solution to nihilism? Superman comics?

Faith because faith is long suffering, patient, and ultimately triumphs over evil in due time. Especially, now in these cynical, real times...

Seriously, Green Lantern (Hal, John, Guy, Kyle, Alan, Jessica and Simon) and their stories have become some of my favourite comic book stories, and I am shocked that this character and their history isn't more appreciated (most likely due to Warner Bros and the live-action film). Green Lantern honestly has as much world-building and character development potential as Star Wars does now.

The way I’ve come to determine heroism from villainy is something I’ve recognised to be somewhat simple.
Heroes make self sacrifices to make improvements upon the world or to protect worthwhile aspects of it that are vulnerable if not safe guarded. They sacrifice social and personal relationships, career opportunities. They know they have the power to improve their life with ease if they abused their abilities, but they sacrifice their own personal interests and opt to do the objectively right thing to do. Where they could do so much with the power they have, they strain to restrain themselves from even taking petty retaliation in a social setting, even keeping their good deeds secret so that those they love won’t suffer ramifications of their efforts against those with wicked agendas.
Villains on the other hand use the sacrifice of others to force their will over others. To make their ideals dominate, to make things just in their eyes. Using power to bend or remove aspects of the world they find unsavoury. Be in rooted in tragedy, revenge, greed, lust, self righteousness, zeal, pride, ego, delusions of grandeur. They might have self control in certain aspects but it’s not in the question of objective morality because they will always be able to justify it. As some are secretive of their identity, it is so that they don’t suffer the consequences of their actions by the disapproving society, or they are pompous enough to flaunt their power over others because they have enough control over others who are in power, or that they are too powerful for society to defeat them, and consequences arnt even a fear.

You ask what is a hero to me that has always been the choice to do the right thing damning the consequences. The choice to be selfless and potentially lose than be selfish and to guarantee a win. To me a hero is someone who does the right thing even when the cameras aren't on. They do the right thing even when there is no reward and that they may even be hated for it they do it because it's the right thing to do. It's why Spider-Man is so great he does the right thing because he knows that with great power there must also come great responsibility

A Hero is not someone who seeks to become an idol or be someone else, but someone who just tries to be the best them they can be.
Superman isn't trying to be Perfect, he's trying to be the best Clark Kent he could be, and that includes wearing blue clothes, a red cape, and saving the day, then he goes back to his daily job, telling the news, keeping people informed, and trying to live his life.

They're absurd. There's nothing to relate to. None of the science adds up, and magic doesn't exist.
I've been trying to understand why people are drawn to them but I still don't have an answer, when we are the heroes. We are the ones to give empathy and help out those less fortunate than ourselves, etc, etc, and in turn teaching that to anyone who knows what we did.
That homeless person earlier, we could help them, not some fantasy idealised 'hero' who flies. Your next door neighbour who's in her 90's, who doesn't get anyone visiting her, you could be her hero just by knocking and checking she is ok.
I still don't understand superheroes and people's love for them.

Gonna be honest here in this day and age what we need is not heroes but revolution, Batman and Superman are remedies that could not change the system no matter how hard they tried and how much they contributed, so instead of trying to constantly patch up a broken system we should look for a cure not by relying on heroes or idols and leaders but in ourselves first.

For the entirety of human history, we have been twlling very VERY tall tales (like religion) and trying to inspire our progeny. But at least comic heroes are entertaining and known to be false, where religion is for some ridiculous reason, belived to be truthful. Myths can be great inspiration or can create insane cults led by popes and priests etc. I love the inspiration from "heroes" in mythology, but i despise the myths of religion and the innumerable deaths and amounts of pain they have caused.

@@HenryLouis21 the problem is we cling to old heros of a status quo that ruined us. We aren't getting out of this hell with the likes of Luke Skywalker or Superman or Captain America. We will need to bring about a new age, with new heros, and they will have to be ruthless. Like heros of old, not of modern times of roses and honey.

Since you wanted us to have a discussion on what it means to be good and ethical, my response to that is that concepts like Good and evil, ethical and unethical are concepts that only makes sense if someone believes in God. In theory most atheists shouldn’t be believing in these concepts but because God exists and has ingrained us with Fitra, it only makes sense. Fitra is a concept that all Muslims believe in which means that every human is born believing in God and that their parents are the ones that make him a Christian, a Jew, a Buddhist, or an atheist. Fitra aka natural disposition is why all humans know how to differentiate between right and wrong regardless of their religion. Without a concept of a creator and without a purpose, why would anyone do “the right thing”, what does that even mean for someone who has no purpose, for someone who believes that humans exist by chance or due to randomness. I know It’s a long comment, but to wrap up my point is: only if someone believes in God, he/she could make an argument for good and evil, right or wrong. That’s why I believe in God and that’s why to me it wouldn’t make sense if God didn’t exist and why we have these universal concepts of right and wrong. Reflect on what I typed and hopefully it makes sense to you. I love this channel btw. I just wanted to share some ideas that you might find interesting.

    • @omegaminoseer4539
      @omegaminoseer4539 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Salaam Alaikum, my brother.
I think that the argument for Fitra doesn't properly define what it is. Atheists have an equal propensity for good as a Christian, as the many problems with priests doing un-Godly things proves. I agree that, "every human is born believing in God," but I disagree that they choose to call it that. I think that people choose to rationalize what **God** is for them, using Heroes as a basis. My mother likens God to Tinkerbell, the fairy from Peter Pan, as that was how she understands His nature. I compare Jesus Christ (peace be upon him) to Luke Skywalker as that is my frame of reference for a person who resists the calls of selfishness. I think that Fitra should be the ingrained belief in the might of God's Will; hence Nietzsche was wrong for thinking that myths will disappear, and God would "die," since Fitra is that Will given a personal voice in our hearts.
