@HiTop Films Thank you so much for this. Superman is my favourite superhero. He was the first superhero my dad introduced me to and has lasted within my heart ever since I was 10.
No matter what anyone says I thoroughly believe the world will always need Superman, and it sometimes saddens me how in an endless sea of superhero media Superman continues to be disregarded and misinterpreted, even WB stated in 2020 how thdy have no idea what to do with the character as they of the mindset that Superman doesn't work in today's era... and that just honestly hurts a little.
I truly hope the rumors of a new Superman film being developed are true, and whether it be Henry Cavill or someone new I think we all know that *we need the big blue boyscout more than ever*

A Superman movie that returns to the boy-scout, optimistic, honest, good, and righteous Superman would be, I think, difficult for modern audiences to fully embrace straight away.

There's nothing embarrassing or outdated about Superman's morals and ideals. Marvel embraced it with Captain America in over 7 movies and he's one of the most popular characters in movies now. WB needs to get out of their own way and stop making the Superman "angsty" in an attempt to make him "relatable".

    • @rogueguardian
      @rogueguardian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

I don't know what the mindset is there. edgy and cool doesn't automatically make it relatable. Spider-Man's a complete dork and an angsty teenager but that's exactly why we love him, we've all gone through high School. Every single one of the movies has a core aspect of that. He's relatable because they bring him down to a level. Heck even when it's really cosmic he's still the most likable and relatable. They treat him like normal guy first and then they show us his powers. So once we see him doing superhero things we can root for him.

Dr Manhattan (someone who could exist anywhere, everywhere, at all points in all timelines, someone who existed in every universe-) said something deeper than any of us could, which was that the universe could exist without himself- Dr Manhattan.
But that the universe can't exist the same way without Superman, it needs Superman- because he's the universe's only hope in every timeline.
Dr Manhattan said without Superman- there can be no hope.
Because even if Superman is weaker, outmatched, outplayed, not as smart, or outnumbered- he's fighting with more determination than anyone else.
    The determination to find hope.
To find the light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how far that beacon of light is, or even if he can't see it- he believes that if he keeps pushing he'll find that light.

I think the issue is they try to give Superman, modern Superman these big huge problems. They leave him out as an alien, different from everyone, forgetting that he has also lived his entire life as a human, with human problems. If you can get the perfect balancing act- the worlds savior, a super hero, with human problems and struggles, you can make Superman relatable in any timeline.
You also need a solid Lois Lane to be his rock, anchoring him to the human side of his life. I think this is why Superman Returns didn't work, that Lois Lane wasn't very good, and I would also argue Amy Adam's Lois Lane wasn't that good either, but I believe that is more of a writing decision than anything else. I never felt their relationship ever truly developed because we never got to see her with Clark Kent, just with Superman. Lois needs to see the human side before she meets the superhuman side. I don't think it works any other way.

Writers tend to forget he was Clark Kent for many years before he became Superman. He became Superman, just as HI Top said, because of the love and kindness he learned during his early years with the Kent's and the small-town care he learned from Smallville. That's why Clark Kent is just as important a part of any Superman story, maybe more so than Superman because it allows the story to ground itself in his humanity. It allows Superman to really shine as a beacon of hope for all mankind.

Maybe hot take, but I don't ever want Superman to be "relatable." That's not what makes him inspirational to me. I don't ever want to see him struggle. I don't ever want to see him challenged, conflicted, experience doubt or hardships. I want classic, All Star Superman. Always knows what's right, always knows what's best, always knows what to do. And does everything he can to get others there as well.
Superman is at his best when he's not treated as human. He's not a person, he is a paragon. Perfect in every way, above everyone else. Not because of his alien DNA but because of who he chooses to be. I don't want to "connect" with Superman, because I don't want Superman to experience the struggles that normal people have to deal with. I want him to already be above those struggles, so he can help others rise above them too.

I think the first step to making a great Superman story is truly understanding his humanity. As soon as you engage in the unfortunately widespread misconception of him just being "strong alien dude", you've already set yourself up for failure. That either results in translations that simply do the character a disservice, or translations that feel the need to stray too far away from what makes Superman so endearing in the first place. We're still yet to see him at his full potential on the big screen imo. I'm really hoping WB pulls it off someday.

What they need to do for a Superman movie is give Superman emotional depth. There’s nothing wrong with embracing his status as a symbol of optimism and hope, but the character needs to be more than that. Showing us how Superman deals with being an outsider and also his almost neurotic personality would be very neat imo and help audiences connect to him on a more personal level . I think what would truly make him connect with audiences however is if they show his need to not fail, something that is almost a flaw for him in ways. He doesn’t handle failure well at all. Show us how he deals with that. And then show us how he overcomes his struggles to fight for what he believes in no matter what. Show us a Superman that struggles like we do, but picks himself back up to be a hero that fights for truth, justice, and a better tomorrow.

First one is when Clark is leaving home to head up North, and his mom says with tears in her eyes, "Remember us, son. Always remember us." The other one is the last scene of the film where the warden says to Superman "This country is safe again, Superman. Thanks to you." Then Superman responds with "No, sir. Don't thank me, warden. We're all part of the same team. Goodnight." Bad Superman adaptations tend to forget that he isn't Superman first but he is Clark Kent first and Superman second. Many other Kryptonian's have the exact same powers but only Clark managed to became a beacon of hope. This is because of Jonathan and Martha Kent doing a great job in raising Clark on their farm. Clark Kent is a good man, a really good one. He is the core of Superman. Without Clark, Superman is nothing. Without Superman, Clark is still Clark and always would be.
For Batman, it's different. Bruce Wayne (metaphorically) died that night in the alleyway. What was left of the boy was a broken and sad child. The billionaire Bruce Wayne is the disguise, while Batman is his true self.

The way Clark was raised, the love his parents gave him, his town gave him, hell, his planet gave him. Makes him more human than anyone. The ideals the Kent’s instilled in him make him SuperMAN. Despite being an alien from a planet light years away, he is human. More human than even Batman who might have no powers but struggles to find emotional connection and stability, who’s seen the worst of humanity and can’t always see the best.

I never understood why would be THAT complicated making a optimistic Superman in a today standard movie, I mean, the outcast is always liked by the public.
With this premise, I'd like to say how much I agree with Alex's words: we live in a "dark and gretty" world and… it's starting to become almost unrealistic and annoying that most of modern characters are like the world they criticize… "because you got to fight fire with fire"(?)… I don't know and I don't think it works.
In a world like ours… I don't know, I just miss that almost naive thinking that any of us can be good with the right help and Superman, to me, has always been that "right help", the figure that is superior not because of his power, but because of how he thinks, how he loves, how he would never give up on us… superior on a human level.

Superman loves all of us, even when we don't love ourselves. Superman taught me to keep on going in this crazy, cynical, often grim world, and to not lose hope for a better tomorrow.

People tend to overlook the "man" part of his name, and focus on the super. A story about him should have his powers take a backseat to Clark's personality being his true super power. His bright and colorful persona make people tend to think he's just some goody two shoes, always smiling, always optimistic, always fearless and perfect. A certain line in his last movie makes people think he's just the embodiment of hope. A property about him takes real passion and knowledge for his character, you can really explore darker and deep themes with him: stories of loss, pain, depression, sadness, confusion, anger, and in the end, how love, truth, justice, and positivity win.
Now more than ever we need a superman movie, but I'm scared that the writers of today are so bitter and different they want to change who Clark is at the core. Thank you for making this video, it really does sum up my thoughts perfectly

The boys, Invincible, black Adam, Multiverse of Madness, Joker, the dark timeline from Zack Snyders justice league, etc.. My point being, although it was fun and a subversion of the genre to begin with, I miss when superheros were just that, super and heros. DC and warner brothers seem to flood the market with batman, as would I, it clearly makes the most money, but it's been done to death. Not even just because that Kryptonite chest would mean it's a fair fight, but because it would be fascinating to see a character who isn't human but earned/learned humanity through the compassion of others go against someone who WAS human but lost that humanity in one of the most horrifying ways possible. To me, that humanity is always what's made Supes such an incredible character, so seeing that be the focus of a film would be a dream come true. And who knows? Maybe Superman could inspire Metallo to rediscover his humanity, just like he does with people across the world every day.
