Back in the day I had a 1975 XLCH and went through 2 idler gears in a matter of a year and a half, sold it and bought a 1976 FLH Police Special. and had no big problems. Loved that bike and had no problems!! Love the videos!!
Tatro, Saw a little crack on 1975 stroker ironhead rear motor mount...micro thin. So i drilled a 10-32 hole...threaded it, then lock-tite a hardened screw in. Been runnung like that for 6 months...has not propegated. Should i bother getting Pingel or just let it be? I listen to the tatro the master only! e
no, you are fine. if you install the motor without a load on the mounts than they will not break. lift up the front of the motor some befor you tighten the front mounts helps a ton on not breaking that rear mount. there is a ton of weight hanging off the rear mount if you don't. tatro
In your experience and opinion, what causes the rear aluminum mounts to crack all the time? I've heard different ideas, the one making the most sense is that the rear mount should be tightened first to align the engine in the frame, then the front mounts shimmed to fit, and when the front mounts are tightened first it will stress the iffy design of the rear.
i like stoddard solvent if you can get it. it cleans very good and leaves very little residue. there are other solvents and soap basted cleaners too. try different type cleaners and find what works for you. tatro
Stoddard solvent, ist that just white spirits?.....i mix white spirits and Gasoline 50/50 to clean parts, i always have some old gasoline laying around I don’t want to put in an engine ....
I had a 73'. I hated that fuckin' bike. A Gremlin lived on it and that fucker would break the dumbest shit if I rode 50 miles. That bike spent more time taken apart in my garage then I ever rode it. I didn't have no money at the time so no rebuild. The motor seized up on me one day and I finally sold it to some other kid.

just watch the videos when i install the motor into the bike and i tell you the why and what to do. i don't do it like you just described.

I like using a steel hammer, ensures machine shops livelihood is further factored into the rebuild.
🤘
how did you clean the parts?

Thank you. We have it named "White Spirit".
Great video. Anyone have a good way to DIY clean an engine that's torn down for someone who doesn't have access to a good shop with a parts cleaner?
anything you have would be a start. just scrubbing with your hands and some rags gets alot done.
tatro
@@TatroMachine Yeah, I want things actually clean like you do, like not having trash in the piston skirts like the last guy who did this.
Allan = I wonder if anyone has counted the pieces in an engine ??? Tatro = Who cares !!!! Me = ROTFLMFAO ...!!!!! Classic ...!!!!!
I have an ironhead Sportster, so this is interesting. But I don't think I'll try this at home. Besides, like they say, "If it works, don't fix it."
yes, but if you had to now you see how to get it done.

if you fixed all the problems at once it would have been tons more reliable. that goes for anything.
