I have been watching all of Tatros Ironhead videos like i'm in class, I am currently building a 1972 Ironhead 1000cc Sportster and i'll tell you what, i've learned a hell of a lot from Tatro.
When I rebuilt a Sportster, I always worried about the rollers falling out of the race on the drive sprocket. Finally I started to take the spring clip and backing plate out and putting the rollers in after the trans was in place. You make it look so easy.
I never had a problem, but I always had to learn everything the hard way. When I built my first stroker , a Harley mechanic told me I should remove the speedometer drive gear, I didn't listen, broke a gear and then the case turned into instant junk. I really enjoy your videos ,Thanks.
Used to have access to lots of those red and white rags working in a industrial setting.Always brought my close friends those for presents when I stopped by.
I am replacing a few parts in my gear box as it tends to half jump out of third gear, there is no grinding noise but the shifter lifts up when it happens. Anyway I have found this video very helpful and appreciate your enginuity. I would also like to replace the shift Shaft with a splined one but can't find where to buy one. Could you please tell me where I can get one.
The case and now it broke completely. Off the gears are still good I have been looking for some advice if I replace a half case then it will need to be line borred and any way it is an all numbers matching bike the best answer I have found is to replace both half's so at least those numbers mach can someone help and I have not found the case yet
if you are restoring the bike than you need to fix the cases. if you just want to ride than just go find another good set to use. the trans trap door is machined to match the case set and are not just interchangeable like everyone thinks they are. misalignment of the gears is very hard on the trans and causes most of the problems that everyone complains about. about every 25 doors i get one that matches a case set. that is not good odds for a good fit when mismatching parts. i would be very suprized if you had no bad gears. look very closely at the 1st gear set. something caused those cases to go boom. any 1972-76 case will fit your frame. tatro
never cared for the shifter being on the european side. Shifters belong on the left side and brake pedals belong on the right side. First time I rode one of those european style bikes, I just about killed myself. Kinda like we drive on the right side and they drive on the wrong side of the road. But it is what it is.
Pretty hard to shift on the left side when flat track racing like originally designed for back in the old days with K models and just a carry over until they became popular sportsters and road bikes. No need for brakes while flattracking or allowed way back. Some of the most exciting racing in my opinion flat track dirt and ice racing

You are truly a master craftsman. I appreciate you sharing your skill.

i don't like that because those clips don't always go in correctly. i like to check them before i put the bearings in.

This video is huge. Very good lesson
You found a clean rag.Should be mandatory to bring a bundle of rags along with the bike. Thanks for the know how.

what are you going to do when you ride a real bike with a hand shifter and foot clutch.
tatro
always wondered about that, never got the opportunity to ride a bike with a suicide clutch. if at first you don't succeed, try try again.
