  • How to Perform Spirometry Lung Function Testing
    Lung function testing is a very important part of respiratory disease diagnosis and management.
    This very simple bedside test allows for easy diagnosis of obstruction and also restrictive lung diseases such as asthma, COPD and pulmonary fibrosis when used in conjunction with other investigations
    Spirometry requires a patient to be safe to perform the examination, and also able. so we must ensure that the patient is not affected currently by nausea or vomiting, or current respiratory tract infections before performing

    Hi Doctor Gill! Love all your videos and have been watching you since you appeared on an ASMR channel. As a filmmaker I have one SLIGHT suggestion. You videos are definitely getting better and better but in this video during the opening interview, you break the 180 degree rule resulting in both you and the patient on screen right looking left. If you imagine a line connecting you two from nose to nose, both cameras should be on the same side of the line. So there’s a camera over her RIGHT shoulder which there is) and a camera over your LEFT shoulder (but in this video it’s also on your right shoulder).
    Hope this makes sense. Just constructive advise I hope. Love everything else. You teach me (a non doctor) a lot, thought I’d give some knowledge back!

    Something I find particularly relevant in this video is that some potential issues are mentioned. I found Dr. Gill's content through the ASMR community but I find myself interested in things such as "what would be a red flag in certain parts of the cranial nerve examination" and so on. Perhaps in future content there could be mentions to what to be on the look out for, etc.

      @DrJamesGill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree completely, I think that whilst it’s still an issue, I think it HIGHLY unlikely I’ll be able to go to the shops without a mask

    I've done this test before! For a study at McGill. As a flute player and an athlete, I felt pressure to perform and blow the test out of the water 😂. Their computer said I was in the 101 percentile (which doesn't make sense to me). So, playing flute and running competitive gives you strong lungs, who'd have thought?

    • @DrJamesGill
      @DrJamesGill  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They probably meant 101% of predicted. Ie better than a “normal” version of you. Still good result though 😊

    Thank you for this demonstration but I have a question, what's the difference between this test and the one where you inhale through the mouth piece instead exhaling?

    I've been waiting for spirometry since lockdown. I'm deemed not "bad enough" and was dropped from the asthma nurse investigations even though I now cannot walk up the street without quite bad SOB. What has happened to the NHS? Gone from being an active gym user and brisk walking 20k a week to a huffing puffing person, all in the space of a month and cannot even get to see a GP. They have dropped the ball.

    I was told I have COPD based on a PFT after I had a bad pneumonia. I needed to PFT to be allowed to work at my job to make sure the lungs weren't damaged too much for my job.
    Yet, I have been an athlete all my life. I finished an ironman after this pneumonia. My v02 max is top 5 % of my age.
    I have literally zero lf the symptoms other than the spirometry. No mucus cough, no continued illnesses, not short of breath.....nothing. Yet, even on a CPEX it supposedly showed up.
    How is this possible?
