    Thanks for the great demonstration as always!
    In case you need a quick reference for a refresher:
    1:00 & 3:00 Brachioradialis reflex (C5/C6)
    1:12 & 3:15 Biceps reflex (C5/C6)
    1:40 & 3:35 Triceps reflex (C6/7/8)
    (1st with zoom-in views on reflex responses, 2nd on muscle contractions)
    2:30 Finger flexion reflex
    4:00 Ankle reflex (S1)
    4:25 Knee reflex
    5:12 Ankle reflex in a recumbent position (S1)

    1.) The Doctor's name is Dr Abraham Verghese. He's a General Internist who works at Stanford. He also has a fabulous TED talk on the value of the physical exam. I highly recommend it.
    2.) Re: the unprovoked reflex at 4:27 in this video, the gentleman being examined is still a "simulated patient", which means he's been hired to play the part. Consequently, there will be acting. But whether the hammer hit his patellar tendon or not, he's still performing the exam correctly - swinging the hammer correctly, and aiming it at the right spot.

    • @dougspizman6751
      @dougspizman6751 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      No need 2 watch. Doctors haven't done physical exams in 20 years. Its 3-5 min and your out of there. Its about patient volume now. If I watch his TED talk it will only exaggerate what is missing.

      @Mareyes2525 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, it looked awkward so I had to slow down the video to see. Seems like his patient was instructed to fake all the reflexes. Fail communication between the two.

    • @rodrigoferreira1175
      @rodrigoferreira1175 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes, I think that might have been the case. Even though these contractions are primarily involuntary, they provoke some inner instinct that makes us uncomfortable, and we don't want to feel that again. After all, our reflexes exist to protect us, and nobody gets protected if no harm is detected. So the reflexes might automate without physical, but emotional (fear) stimuli.

    My girlfriend was born without her 1st cervical vertebrae. She was misdiagnosed and had a unnecessary brain surgery and they opted to remove her second and third cervical vertebrae because of chiari malformation and now she is in major pain so if anyone out there has any solution at at all other than pain killers I'd be greatly appreciative. I'm scheduling a kinesiologist appointment here in the near future but I'm just trying to get her out of pain. Thank you kindly

    If we did this right usually the doctor and the patient get red in the face but I suspect this time only I got red in the face.
