    Examining the thyroid is so involved, why is that, Dr. Gill?

    • @DrJamesGill
      @DrJamesGill  4 ปีที่แล้ว +841

      Because the thyroid acts as the “accelerator pedal” for the whole body.
      If you have and under or over active thyroid EVERYTHING is affected
      It’s an old video but this does explain it

      Dr James Gill Indeed! I have Graves’ disease, diagnosed as a teenager I was considered one of the worst affected in the country as my readings were off the charts, several doctors viewed me in a group as a case study I was so “toxic” - all under control now but wow those symptoms, I felt like my body was losing its mind if that makes sense 😅

Especially when the doctor would use the stethoscope, because it would go all quiet except for the rustling of their white coat as they moved it around, and softly asked me to take deep breaths. That was long before the term ASMR existed, and my parents were confused when I tried to explain how I felt pleasantly relaxed…as long as I wasn’t getting a shot that day! 😂

  • @MihailMahov
    @MihailMahov 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I'm not a doctor, nor am I a medical student, and yet I always enjoy watching Dr. Gill's videos.
    I understand almost nothing of Dr. Gill's medical terminology, but there are some things that make a strong impression on me.
    The first thing is the great respect that Dr. Gill gives to the patient. In Dr. Gill's hands, the patient feels like a king who is given a lot of attention.
    The second thing is the soothing casual voice of Dr. Gill, which creates a uniquely relaxing atmosphere. This voice hypnotizes and relaxes the person, and this is already half of the cure.
    I especially like to watch when Dr. Gill's hands measure the patient's heart rate or tap lightly on his chest. And not forget the check of the reflexes of the hands and feet with a special hammer.
    I have never liked the name ASMR, which is given to this kind of sensation. There is something crude and too scientific in that name.
    And the sensations of ASMR are a kind of opening of consciousness, something that Science has yet to understand and appreciate with dignity.
    So it is not known when Dr. Gill helps more - when he teaches medical techniques or when he unknowingly treats a huge number of people with his soothing voice.
    Think about it, Dr. Gill, please !

    I have a question Dr. Gill, when palpating the thyroid gland in a patient with a history of hyperthyroidism, is it supposed to feel enlarged and with a pulse similar to when we palpate the vein of the wrists? Or does it only feel enlarged? My question arises because that area has to be auscultated. Thank you ❤️

    • @DrJamesGill
      @DrJamesGill  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amne Marie with hyperthyroidism you can get various cardiac changes
      Most likely you’ll find a tachycardia - raises heart rate - when checking the peripheral pulse at the wrist. BUT there are several causes of tachycardia including simple anxiety
      With a hyperthyroidism you MAY get what is called a thyroid bruit - so you hear a turbulent rushing of blood sound through the thyroid which is not present normally.
      In terms of enlargement of the thyroid that can happen in both underactive and overactive thyroid glands... or not be present at all - which is the case in most mild conditions

    • @DrJamesGill
      @DrJamesGill  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amne Marie the pulse, assuming no vascular disease, should feel the same at all points. The heart will be creating the pulse, but the thyroid may be having an effect on the characteristics of the pulse
