Honestly it's a bit more of a Chigago/Northern Illinois accent, the accent changes quite a bit the farther away you get from Chicago and by the time you get down near the southern tip you can get a bit southern country, but it is what people expect when you say an Illinois accent.
The city I'm from in North Carolina only has like 3 things to be proud of- Subway, Sheetz (though with a soda corner cause it's dry), and a John Deere museum.

For some reason down in the southern part of the state here we pronounce it with an “E”, never knew anyone who pronounced it with an actual “I” before I met someone from more central/northern Illinois.

Can confirm. Born and raised in the NW burbs, and we say Chicago so people know where in the state we are from. North of 55 is Chicago, South of 70 is southern, central-east is Champaign and central-west is springfield...except for East Saint Louis. We don't claim that...

Yes. I visited clients in the Loop, Waukegan, and Bloomington, and it's like being in different parts of the country.
