      to be *fair*, most people are going to either pronounce it like the French name its derived from, or the anglicized version of that name theyd be familiar with. the "loo-uh-vul" pronunciation (as someone born and raised in louisville) is a weird AF choice and i think derives entirely from locals, and kentucky in general, insisting on being the contrarian in any situation; same with the local pronunciation of versailles

    • @Atomsk2
      @Atomsk2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Outsiders would struggle to pronounce the name correctly if it’s spelled entirely different from how it’s said. Top it all off with “which of these letters are silent/accented”. And it could be expected to have people pronounce things differently even if they’re from the same state but not the city in question. Then as someone else said if the term is usually of a different language than the intended spoken language then it could have even more ways of saying it. I lived in a place where there were different dialects for speaking the same language depending on where you were, also the formal and informal tense of the words, well as how the sentences would be worded based on other situational things (talking to an elder or superior or family). I don’t think we had any issues with calling places by the locally accepted pronunciations but it wouldn’t be a far stretch for me to believe some people might have said it differently.
      Tl;dr :o language is weird

Especially if you say it like _that!_ At least people who say "Louey-ville" have the excuse that most of the country says it that way. But "Louis-ville?" Nahhhh nahhhh. No excuse for that.
