My personal experience - from my heart.. It's a long post to read, apologies to everyone. Clearing Chartered Accountancy exams is just like purchasing a seed for plantation. The litmus test commences pursuant to planting the seed. The farmer needs to appropriately assess the climate, measure the quality of water to be used , gauge the quality and quantity of fertilisers, erect a scare crow, indemnify his position from unforseen circumstances etc. for successful germination of crop. Drawing the same analogy, the real challenge begins, when the candidate commences to seek employment opportunities. It's a test of his tenacity, skills and demeanour. Significant number of corporates / firms participating in ICAI campus programmes, more or less, prefer to recruit the below mentioned candidates. -CA Rankers - First attempt CAs -Other than first attempt CA with prior internship experience in a big 4/ flagship companies as an industrial trainee. Candidates like me are in a dilemma, as we didn't satisfy the aforesaid parameters. Needless to say, I wasn't short listed. Having completed my CA /CS in multiple attempts, articleship with a humble CA firm, I was fortunate enough to crack the interview and join a Big 4 in Private equity tax and regulatory team which is one of the few cream profiles for CAs and not every candidate gets an opportunity. Sought to make the most of my 3 year work stint with the Big 4. Accepted complex assignments, wasn't worrying about the end results. You can comprehend the context, having served as an intern at delloite, also the understand, how as a team we have to deliver quality of work product with constraints like stringent deadlines, multiple /overlapping assignments and assiduously work out action plans. With relentless efforts, learning, unlearning, a flagship project like GIFT gujarat landed was handed over to me . It required me to independently read, assimilate, summarise, explain to multiple teams regards the extant international finance Centre tax /regulatory laws, ecosystem, concessions granted. Also understand the Indian tax and regulatory regime and suggest amendments. RBI did notify ifsc regulations in April 2015. The assignment was new even for my partners / directors as no one in the team /even industry had dealt with these aspects. During the course of the assignment, I realised nothing is impossible. It's just that, we all need to walk that extra mile. It's the no of experiences you are able to garner during your stint with an organisation, more than no of years of experience . Sambhav Jain first and foremost thing, is to do a thorough research starting from understanding the functions of investment banks, reading and researching, and gaining insights from people working for investment banks. IB It's not just about deals. In a nutshell, Investment banking is split into front, middle and back activities. While large service investment banks offer all lines of business, both "sell side" and "buy side", smaller firms focus on sales/trading/research, respectively. I'll illustrate a very simple transaction ACo wishes to takeover B Co. In such a scenario both companies will appoint IB and would negotiate the best possible deal for their respective clients. IB will have undertake financial modelling, seek external opinion from experts, counsels, big consultants Big 4 consultants, auditors sign off etc. Net net their job is to co ordinate and monitor the transaction life cycle including negotiations with various stakeholders (internal and external) Critically evaluate your area of interest, skills required vs your current skill set, ways you can supplement your skill set and knowledge base. As Anurag rightly mentioned, an MBA even from top B school ain't a guarantee for an IB profile. The teams are lean and work assiduously, though a cream profile and extremely high pay job . I have been a vendor for IB/VC firms and have seen the entire life cycle of a deal/transaction from origination to closure so have a bit of experience in interacting and working with them. When you work on live deals, you should be ready to work 24x7 as different functions are dealt by different team members, at different locations, geography and timezone and all are interrelated. Each cog in the wheel is important. If you are really passionate about IB, definitely go ahead and work towards it and you'll accomplish. Be true to your heart and keep evaluating yourself. As mentioned above, being a high paying job and restricted profile the attrition in IB firms is limited. Also external opportunities from a profile and from a salary standpoint is disappointing as you'll may be end up at a compete IB /VC find or consulting firms. Many folks work in IB / for good 8-10 years either launch their own startup, keep hopping or make a fortune and retire. All the best
