    Excellent review Mark. Truly massive horsepower and a very nice interior design

      Thanks again. Indeed, there's a lot of HP going into electric cars, probably more than necessary to be honest, but it's at least a lot of fun.

    Changing screen for portrait to landscape is a good feature... use portrait to drive and landscape to watch movies or play games.

      To be fair, portrait does work better for sat nav so you're right.

    It's puzzling that BYD haven't updated the Han and Tang with the 3.0 platform technologies. I expect them to do it soon, the Seal is styling all over the more "premium" Han.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The truth is that it's not as simple as sticking one shell on another platform. There are hard points built in that can't simply be moved around freely, hence both the Tang and Han will need new bodies to fit 3.0. Plus, BYD are still offering PHEVs and DM-i models, and 3.0 doesn't allow for this, it's EV only.

    • @maniacyro5167
      @maniacyro5167 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rumor says it will be done to the back end of the year. Han and Tang are shared by BEV and PHEV, so it's not that easy.

      han and tang has bev and phev version. 3.0 is bev platform.

    nice review. these are selling so well in China - even in major cities where middle-class consumers used to avoid local brand cars. I guess the extra rear passenger space is a good selling point for many of the buyers.

    • @EmmaNguyen-mg5xq
      @EmmaNguyen-mg5xq ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Many chinese customers are no longer overly obsessed with Western brands. Even Audi Mercedes VW EVs are not popular in china.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup, BYD's big selling point in 2022 was availability, and the fact the car is a strong proposition is a bonus. BYD still have a reputation problem with the many who remember their less-than-great models from years gone by, but nowadays I don't think there's a dud amongst them, they're all very good in their own ways.

    • @HermanWillems
      @HermanWillems ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EmmaNguyen-mg5xq Maybe the people who can't afford those brand no. But, brand item companies from Europe still make their largest profit from Asia. For example Clothing brands. D&G, LV etc. I think it's more that there is a growing middle class who can afford these cars, but not yet the expensive Western brands. And for that money you get a decent car in China.

    • @duyataksis5210
      @duyataksis5210 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HermanWillems No, the people can afford Western brands, they just opt not to buy them. White worship is definitely on a steep decline in China; still far too much of it, but the trends are encouraging. The trends are encouraging in Europe as well - they seem determined to deindustrialize and impoverish themselves as quickly as possible.

    • @HermanWillems
      @HermanWillems ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@duyataksis5210 this is strange when looking at numbers. Sales from European brands are trough the roof in China and other Asian countries. Regarding luxery brands it is. Numbers tell different stories. But regarding cars. The quality of the Chineese cars are probably getting better so they buy their own brand. Especially the middle class which grew alot would buy BYD for example. Those who can't afford the expensive brands but can afford a decent Chineese brand car.
      Here in Europe we are price sensitive. If a new brand comes, people will not take the risk if the price is higher. Nio is priced higher than Tesla. So Nio opted for a bad strategy. BYD on the other hand took the correct strategy and will make it. People will lease the BYD not own it. People actually buying a Chineese car will take a very long time. Throwing alot of your hard earned cash money.(yes we do not really use loans for cars like Americans) into unknown brand is deemed risk full we don't do that. The brand has to make a track record. Probably trough leasing of companies. Currently Europe is crazy about the Model Y. Because we love a practical car. We love space inside a not giant car. (My country has the longest people in the world for example. Even some teenager girls are 1.90 lol)
      But in Asia losing face is very important. Which is the opposite in the Netherlands. Cultures are different. Here rich buy a well equipped German expensive car than rip off everything that makes it look expensive. No decals. We love "stealth wealth". While in Asia it's all about showing off your wealth to improve your "face". This is why luxery brands like LV and D&G, Gucci sell more and more in Asia each year. Am talking about numbers of items. Not profit or money. Means more people want it. More so than in USA and Europe. Also make up brands make alot in Asia.

    Excellent review. Thanks for your hard work on this one, as usual. I think it would be great if you also went a bit more over a comparison with "like models" rather than just with the brand's other offerings. Say, this compared to the same tier offering from XPENG, NIO, and other Chinese manufacturers and which one do you think is best value, performance, etc. Thanks again man, fabulous content!

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for the feedback, it's really appreciated. Will certainly try to add more of that in future reviews. I can compare to the P7 but not yet the NIO ET7, still waiting on them to let me have an extended drive.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's certainly more regal, more mature in the looks department I'd say, though I love the Seal personally. You're right though, this on e-platform 3.0 will be another car again. They're developing quick.

  • @Scarbir
    @Scarbir ปีที่แล้ว +3

    With a Tesla Model 3 now at €44k, this may be a hard sell in Europe. Surprising actually that the Chinese brands rarely undercut Western brands.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, it's a very tough sell. That price point is very congested with some strong cars in there, plus some other good ones that come in at less than 70k. The Model 3 is smaller, maybe has less power and features, I'm not certain, but is a compelling alternative no doubt.

    • @HermanWillems
      @HermanWillems ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, very hard sell. Also Nio ET5 is extremely expensive compared to Tesla. All the Chinese brands are way more expensive than Tesla. The problem is, people would try out an unknown brand if its cheap. But if something they know, is cheaper they buy that. For example the MG ZS EV from China was pretty popular because it was dirt cheap. The reviews where ok ish, but yes it was only 33K euro here so one of the cheapest new EV's here.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  ปีที่แล้ว

      @HermanWillems Definitely. I think we can't expect huge sales from the Chinese brands yet for the reason. There's still a general distrust of them which people need to get over first, then there's a bigger barrier to premium cars. MG was both cheap and a known brand already in Europe being formerly British, so it will take some time. I have seen a few BYD Yuans already on a trip to Gothenburg though so some are breaking through.

    • @HermanWillems
      @HermanWillems ปีที่แล้ว

      BYD can go along. But Nio, Xpeng and Li-Auto won't go along as they would be crushed as Nio and Xpeng currently make huge losses a large percentage of their overall cashflow is losses. Now they have to lower the prices aswell. And nobody in Europe is going to buy an unknown brand for a higher price than Tesla. As most Chineese brands now are more expensive than Tesla here.

    • @HermanWillems
      @HermanWillems ปีที่แล้ว

      @@InsideChinaAuto nah that MG brand did not matter. Every news reporter here said its a Chineese car. We don't care it has a MG badge or not. Our perception of MG is thats its a chineese brand. We see Volvo also more and more as a Chineese brand. Volvo lovers also decline as the quality of Volvo is going down. Many many complaints here... and Volvo lovers blame it on Geely.
      The MG did well as it had a very very good price compared to the competition. And people who had to choose a leasecar for work for 5 years/150.000 km. They just lease it. For them it's not a risk as they don't buy it. Nobody bought the MG with their cash money. Nobody here would take the risk. Alot of people don't like to jump to another brand if they are happy with it. Kia for example is very loved here among the normal people and toyota aswell. But it took kia more than 20 years to do that.
      Best road for China to enter Netherlands is trough lease construction for people who get a lease car from work for a cheap price. This is the only door that is open and low risk. From there China can build trust. I see no other way. People mistrust Chineese brands very deeply.

    Great work, Mark! Enjoyed watching it. I've driven the Han several times too and it is really impressive. But I think that BYD designers went too far at some points. For example, this rotatable screen looks like a toy. But all in all, it is a great car, on of the best in China.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Denis, much appreciated. It is a good car, very solid, maybe not quite as trendy as a Seal or ET5 for example, maybe a more mature choice. The rotating screen seems to be a feature they're pushing ahead with. I've yet to really see the benefit of the portrait format but maybe some apps are just better that way. Not sure.

    In the back, is one of the couch settings comfortable? I rarely find it comfortable on couches that can be tilted.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought fully reclined it was OK, nothing special. For me, foot room is a biggie because rarely are these Chinese EVs short on knee space, and with the front seat as low as it goes there wasn't a lot of that. It wasn't uncomfortable, just not as comfortable as maybe it could be, though I doubt many drivers in China choose to sit as low as I prefer to.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, though they'll have to deliver it first, which we're still waiting on. 85 isn't bad but could be the limit for the e-platform 2.0.

    • @HermanWillems
      @HermanWillems ปีที่แล้ว

      It's also about efficiency. My Tesla Model 3 RWD can do even more than 500km in summer on just 60kWh. (It's dubbed as the most efficient car in the world)
      On 80 to 100km/h roads I do between 100 and 120Wh/km. Have you ever seen a Chineese car do that? That's why Tesla can make so much profit and they can lower the price to destroy competition and still make profit.
      They do more with less stuff. Less stuff is higher margins is more profit.

    Hi I live in Shenzhen and plan to buy the Han. But I am not sure to buy the single motor or the double motor. Which one you suggest. ? I will drive most of time and city’s and highways. Thanks. Greetings Robert.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robert, thanks for the question. If you're doing city and highways, honestly you don't need more than the single motor version. The twin motor version has more power than you're likely to really need, especially if you're not doing spirited driving (and really how often can anyone do that on Chinese roads?). I haven't driven the single motor version though so recommend you check them both at your local dealer first, but I suspect single will do you just fine.

    Have you tried the Nezha S?
    That one has been hyped up as the main rival to the BYD Han in recent years...
    In the same way that the IM Motors L7 had been claimed to be the Nio ET7 killer.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haven't had chance to try it yet but I'm working on it. I don't think it's a Han rival though, more a P7 rival, though there's overlap in there now. I liked the interior though, but I heard quality isn't quite up there.
      IM L7 is a really nice car but state-owned companies are not great on the marketing side of things so it can't really compare to the ET7 on sales as NIO are much better at that.

    • @possumsam2189

      @@InsideChinaAuto Seems like Nezha is probably experiencing some teething pains
      IM suffers a bit from the typical problems that come with JVs and that stems mostly from the sheer size of SAIC. SAIC already has multitudes of brands & JVs that are simply eating each other at this point.
      Oh yeah, heard the Aion Hyper GT is having its release in April. Thoughts?

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  ปีที่แล้ว

      @possumsam2189 Maybe, but Nezha have really come a long way in a short time. The difference between their V and the S are night and day, enormous progress. Coupe coming soon too!
      For the Hyper GT, I'm excited about that too. Saw it in Guangzhou and it looked cool. Curious how they'll position it quality wise, because the Y is much cheaper and therefore more plasticky, but the Hyper GT will be up against some quality rivals so will need to step up accordingly in feel. We'll get hold of one as soon as we can but they're not available yet.
