I started converting an older Kontakt library today and it was rough at first, but once you get past that initial learning curve things sort of start falling into place from there. It is so satisfying when you load up an instrument you worked on and see it show up in Decent Sampler. Thanks again, you are such a blessing to the music community! Joyfully!🎹
can’t thank you enough brother. I just turned a vintage air piano bought for €20 at a thrift shop into a dspreset and it sounds otherworldly. keep up the good work 🗣️
Because you are awesome and made all this free. I'm going to release my first instrument free as well and make it only exclusively available for DecentSampler and Reason NNXT and of course, offer it free :) I'll try and make a video about the process. The instrument is "the Pig Flute", a contra bass flute which I recently made out of PVC pipe. Speaking of Reason, I've tried and tested your DecentSampler VST in Reason and so far it is working super smoothly! I'm not sure, but I think the Reason crew would PROBABLY be interested to also offer it as an RE (Rack Extension, Reason's native system)... not sure if that's something you'd want to look into, but just wanted to throw it out there.
I followed your instructions this morning and sampled an weird but unremarkable little travel 12 string guitar into DS. I surprised when it worked on the first try. I guess you gave us some pretty darned good instructions.
Awesome that you've provided this excellent tool for free. What a gift. You are clearly talented musically, and in software and with sublime text editing skills. Impressed!
This is fantastic news, not least because it's you, so there's actually a very good chance that there's going to be a sensible direction and evolution 🍾🥳
This is a noble undertaking. Every language supports xml, plus you can define schemas for it, and it is built in to any editor. SFZ is somewhat near to xml but isn't. I envision fully in-browser editors and players in the future. Lastly, thank you for camelCasing the attribute names.
at first I could not get my head around this watching the video and almost noped out of it. Then I sat down, looked at some other dspreset files, and now I have a playable Korg M1 piano sample instrument with 4 velocity layers :D
"Ultimately, I definitely expect to make a bunch of visual tools for creating sample libraries..." If Dave made it easier to create sample libraries with more visual tools, Kontakt would go out of business. Kontakt is older than me and to this day it is still unnecessarily difficult for beginners to create a single knob without learning a custom scripting language for Kontakt specifically, and the lack of TH-cam tutorial resources doesn't help. If Dave actually addressed the problem Kontakt never did, this would revolutionize the music production industry.
I know this is two months old, but I had to agree. I'm a complete beginner and just spent four days trying to get ADSR knobs and an effects bypass button to work in Kontakt. I did, but the whole time I kept thinking "I can map and assign knobs in any modern synthesizer. Why is this so difficult?!" I still plan on learning Decent Sampler, but if Dave can make visual tools, that'd be a godsend.
Thanks David, this was great! I'm working to build a unit in building instruments in decent sampler for my students, and this video will be a great help. You make the coding aspect easy and less daunting.
you had me at Sublime Text. So pleased that this is just XML. Makes perfect sense. Also I never knew you could edit multiple lines in Sublime. So double win for me today.
This is super cool! I made a guitar power chord sample instrument once using the Grace plugin, and it was cool, but I think I need to recreate it using your application!
Hello David! Thank you for your excellent work with DS and merci beaucoup for your good educational content. I am going to sample an upright piano this weekend. It's a family piano that we sadly have to get rid of...I really wish to sample it because I first got into music with this instrument. Thanks again for all those useful insights.

Great David! thank you so much for your effort!!! I was wondering if you will going to add time synced in tempo loops, like load a drum loop and make it time stretch to the DAW's bpm. Is that possible? Thanks again!
Great stuff, I've been interested in making libraries with custom UI for a while but Kontakt seemed a little too complicated (well, now I've done my first DS library). btw, you forgot to mention you're the one who's behind the project!
Love this concept and I've had a go at making an instument but alas I am a poor hack, and have made an awful instument so far !!!! Couple of questions come to mind though, I'm making drum machines out of it, 1st a cheeky Amen break and then I hope to make a hiHat toy but .. I'm not sure how to get one sample to choke another, for a hi hat open choked by a HiHat closed. Also are there plans for multiple outs at some stage ? Is there a way to have a master tune / pitched for global for all the instruments, and a way to have a knob to tune pacific samples ?

Hey David, I have a question: what's the reason you wanted to create your own sampler? Were you dissatisfied with the sfz format? Because I noticed, for example, that the sfz-format has no "random" value for it's sequence mode, while the dspreset-format does (talking about a random round robin mode that doesn't trigger the same sample twice). Edit: and forgot to say, but it looks great! Really nice work.
Hey David! Im quite amaized about your work. I really needed a plugin like this which is more simple than kontakt player, but still has the same features. I made multi microphone drum samples from my acoustic drums and cymbals and i would like to import them into Decent Sampler... But related to this i have a question. Is is possible to programme the hi-hat articulations like, closed, open, and the cymbal chokes? Thanks for your reply.

Hey David, I was wondering if it would be possible to control descent sampler via cli commands or via a programming language. It would be amazing if you could, let's say: create a DS instance as an object, set instrument and values in that instance (maybe on creation or have the ability to manipulate it later), and then use that object to play notes of varying pitches and length. If you could do this with programming, I think there would be quite a bit of possibility that could open up. Im assuming your code is close source? So I haven't found a way (like using coding vst hosts) to manipulate it to work yet, but will like to try if you have any ideas on this matter. Thanks.
not yet, but maybe some day? A dream side-project is to try to get it running on a Raspberry Pi...that would probably require some sort of external API like what you describe.
