I was pretty late to discover this one, but Stella has an extremely inspiring sound! Really happy to have purchased the full version. I ended up using Stella throughout the first track of my recently released EP. It's a vocally driven mix of emo rock, synth pop, and chill lofi beats. The track is called The Bad Time in Emporium, if anyone is interested in checking it out. Stella worked incredibly well for it, and I plan to use it for more tracks in the future. Thanks @VenusTheory for this amazingly sampled instrument!
I still have my mothers old Framus 5/54 Riviera 1964 Black Rose vintage archtop guitar with a real unique, very dry and wooden sound. Maybe I should try to do my first sample library with it.
my yamaha acoustic is older than god, and it's the one instrument i have kept hold of since i bought it in 1994. like yours it needs a setup, the frets are shallow, but it has so much character as it is I refuse to do anything with it. Love you for being of a similar vein and creating a sampler instrument of something like this. Off to buy it immediately.
As far as noise reduction goes, the inbuilt Audacity NR is bloody incredible! Such a pitty that a lot of more powerful DAWs don’t include equally good NR capabilities.
The Acoustic guitar is a devil to record. So funny to see you struggling with the same issues as me, which is holding your breath forever and for me also not making unwanted sounds with your clothes, chair, etc. Your video production is stellar dude! Thanks for providing high quality content! Best, Andy
"I'm sure this guitar is already out of tune from taking it down the stairs..." Ha! I think I might own a Stella myself. She doesn't look like it, but definitely acts the same way.
It's ridiculously temperamental about things haha. One of these days I want to try and take it in to a guitar tech or luthier to see if they could do a more proper repair but I'm sure that'd cost me a small fortune if they could even save it.
Just installed the free Stella . . . most impressed . . . love the tone. Off to buy the full Stella samples. Oh, and thoroughly enjoyed your demonstration of creating the library . . . Thanks muchly VT
That was fun to watch! I wish there was a detailed tutorial, a step-by-step one, that explains the hows and whys of this whole process. Can you please direct me to something you have made or someone else? Thanks and God bless! 😊🙏🏻❤
Yes, this DOES inspire me to download it and try it for myself. What's more, it inspires me to do so right now! An extremely big Thank You in advance!!!
Nice video and how you describe your process. I find it easier to build my instruments in kontakt. Many think that kontakt is complex but as I explained in one of my videos some of the free samplers discourage newbies by making the instrument building process more difficult and "coding" like.
Luckily Decent Sampler instruments are very copy/paste. It's not nearly as complex as Lua or KSP for Falcon/Kontakt. However the visual aids for Kontakt/Falcon do make mapping things significantly easier - the creator of Decent Sampler is working on some new tools though to make creating instruments easier!
@@VenusTheory Thanks for your reply. I am not only referring to the visual aids for mapping. Modulation and layering of samples and groups in Kontakt are very intuitive without a single line of KSP code. Concerning Falcon, it's a beast (an overkill in certain areas). That's why I think Kontakt strikes the right balance. I like David (the creator of Decent Sampler) and his demeanor. He is a sweet guy. However, I am just afraid that some establishments might exploit his attempts coding a simple free sampler to send the wrong message to potential samplists (i.e it's hard to build evocative, complex, and organic instruments involving modulation etc. Therefore play around with free instruments and tip creators but pay the high premium for the "professional" good stuff).
@Ra Sharpness It's not hard to add a few custom knobs in Kontakt. Ten lines of KSP, copy/paste. I will address some of the easy shortcuts in my tutorials. But building a complex instrument does not require programming in Kontakt. The modulation and editing functions available within the engine are very intuitive. Cheers John!
Check out "$13 Stella" on the album The Mason Williams Ear Show. Stella's were a mail order-department store item (think "Montgomery Ward"). According to the liner notes, Mason's Stella did not survive to make the recording, as sampling was limited to the likes of Delia Derbyshire ("Dr. Who" theme). "$13 Stella" might make a comeback with your Sampled Gibson. I guess inflation and brand recognition got to the price of yours. There is something attractive about the non-resonant "thunk" of the picked bass strings of your Gibson-Stella. Round-wound steel string noise for chord changes, might be welcome too. The Tascam recorder is very nice too. Love your microphone tree too; recording from solo guitar to a symphony orchestra (okay, not QUITE a Decca Tree).
I just did a search and it turns out that Stella guitars were made by the Oscar Schmidt Company and you can buy a book about its history. There are current brands that are the equivalent and tend to sell for around $100.
This was amazing and informative. I own your other libraries and am loving them. I'll be picking this one up too. I don't make intruments but I use a lot of them, and as such, I dislike Kontakt and I hate Maize Sampler. Decent Sampler is unencumbered by what irks me about the others and I'm glad to see you supporting the growth of that format. Thank you and Rock on!
Wow good stuff! That decent sampler thing is really looking good (compared to that popular one that starts with K). I hope more people start using Decent Sampler now that you showed that its fun and Quality sounding!
How do you create the GUI of the sample Library? I am a musician and an artist. I am very interested in this process. I would really like to know the process for packaging the sample for digital delivery also.
And speaking of libraries...or not...I'm stepping into the world of doing some background tracks for a friends project, a documentary of a persons life growing up in in Uganda. Can you shed some light on a organized file system of how you would categorize different music styles, rhythms, genres, etc.? Appreciate your help!
Hey Man, I have a question of different sort. What backup service do you use and how do you set it up? The things we don't get to hear about it schools...
@Venus theory is there any way to code decent sampler instruments to be MPE compatible? I know that in Kontakt you can create 4 seperate instances of the instrument and assign them to different midi channels to make them MPE compatible, but can you do that in decent sampler too?
Hey, awesome video! (they always are). Can I ask what stereo bar you’re using and if you need an adapter for the shotgun mic clip? Also, for the programming side, what language is that in and are there any guides you can point to? Thank you!
lol, 80.00 for a guitar that would easily run you 1,000-1,500.00? wow! that's so nice! all I can say is winner winner, chicken dinner! Also, nicely done on the sampling
I had the same idea but since the name wasn't even close to the logo I'm not sure that was the key to the mystery. It also has Zeon on it as well and was all over the case, so I'm assuming Zeon was maybe the owner and Stella was someone in relation to them. I guess we'll never know!
I was a bit worried about the touchscreen at first, but it's really snappy and actually great to work with. Suppose we'll see how it holds up in the field once it quits raining in this damn state and I can take it outside!
Kurt Cobain played a Stella (brand guitar) on "Polly" on Nevermind, and the same guitar is believed to have also been used on "Something in the Way." When a guy from Guitar World magazine pointed out to Kurt in an interview that the guitar sounded a little flat on "Polly," Kurt replied, "That’s a 20-dollar junk shop Stella - I didn’t bother changing the strings. [laughs] It barely stays in tune. In fact I have to use duct tape to hold the tuning keys in place." It may have only had five strings on it at the time of recording as well.
Haven't done a session at 192 yet, but I have an upcoming project in a couple weeks where I'm going to try that out. I'll be curious to see if it's as bad as people say it is.
so cool! thank you for this you should join the ambient collab album a bunch of synthers and i are putting together id love to have you on a track, easy, lowest amount of time expended, fun, ......not lucrative lol.... probably low views too hahah
