quinton quill Me either, I escaped Michitoilet back in '92 and am now in SC too. I have also never had to change a wheel bearing on any of my cars which makes me wonder if the salt plays a part in their demise also even though they're sealed. I have 6 cars......two with over 200k miles, three with between 100 and 200k miles and 1 with 80k miles.

Two years ago we found a tool called the Hub Shocker. Works awesome on the rear Subaru bearings. Just have to pull wheel speed sensor first and use a 10 pound sledge hammer. Tens years experience at Subaru dealers and I've only had one wheel speed sensor bolt break on anything newer than 2009. Love the channel !

A note on retirement: I took medical retirement a while back. The first few months were great. Then you get bored so you find stuff to do. Then you find more stuff to do. And some more. They say that when you retire, every day is a Saturday. Wrong. Every day is a Monday because you've got no more excuses not to work. Never worked so much in my life. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a Ford dually that needs some battery terminal love and two flats. I need a vacation from retirement.

I had one very stuck on bearing on my wife's outback. I used a 3 jaw puller and it split the bearing apart with the hub still stuck. I saw your video trick 04:02 on how to hammer the hub from the rear. I have a basic level 18v cordless Ryobi hammer drill. Using your method, I was able to hammer the hub loose from behind, then use the jaw puller to remove it without it splitting apart. Thanks for posting this.

Hey, I fixed Meema's car this morning. Lady up the street texted me and said the transmission went out in Meema's 2003 Corolla. Went to have a look and found shift cable bushing disintegrated inside the console. A quick trip to the dealer and a few bucks for the rubber bushing and Meema was back on the road. Meema gave me the biggest hug when she found out she didn't need a new transmission!

Under automatic trans the car book says "take it to an author service center". 17 hours flat rate to remove the trans. I had it out in two long days. I never had an auto trans apart before. Had it back together in four days and back in in a day and a half. If I can do it you can do it.

!!! I always remove the speed sensor!!!. If the bearing is rusted into the knuckle and it won't come out with the hammer as it often is. I do this. I leave the axle bolted to the splined hub. I remove the e-brake shoes and I slide the e-brake cable out of the tube on the backing plate. I then pry the axle partially out of the differential. I install the slap hammer on the hub. I heat the knuckle around where the bearing seats. I have someone slap the slap hammer while I hit the hub with a hammer. Leaving the axle bolted prevents the hub from coming out of the bearing while slapping with the slap hammer.

Used Mayhew 37316 which adapts to any 1/2in socket, along with some sacrificial impact sockets (did not damage the sockets nor bolts). At 160k and 8yrs, mine both required a torch to get them out of the backing plate. I'm in WI.

When you got the bearing out with big nasty, it was ok because we don’t have a big nasty at work; just inferior air hammers....but I was like no way you’ll get it out of the backing plate without a fight. I’ve had to take it off and smash it in the vise with a sledge before. Eric O the car whisperer waves his brass hammer and it falls right out. Unreal... teach us the way!

Did this on my 13 Forester before the snow flew. Don’t have a big nasty and ended up taking over an hr to get the bearing out. Thanks to the salt Christie’s here in Ontario Canadia!

I also had a freezing cold wheel bearing to do today , at 8am in the damp and murk .a front one on a rusting ford transit .
after 15 minutes of miserable struggling, I also was planning a vision of the future , with beaches, relaxation and no cars .
when its a VW the sun is always shining :-D

Eric good series. You nailed it retirement is a crap shoot. You can plan all you want with the experts but believe what I say they tell you what you want to hear.i had one so called specialist come tell me a rosey story an never saw her again. Eric you and Mrs O are pretty sharp individuals so trust YOUR instincts but be careful with the ones who say DONT WORRY YOU WILL BE FINE. Do your HOMEWORK. Great videos. ❤️ Artie

Great timing on the lift. The new owner would've called pissed 4 hours after he installed it! At least it gave you a fireworks display - that's always fun. 😁 Can't wait to see all the new shop hardware you've got coming!😎 Just like Christmas!
Good to know about the speed sensors. I've yet to do a hub bearing on a Subie. I'd have busted one off for sure. I've got a customer with the same year Outback ... or Forester - I can never tell the difference, lol. He's actually coming by tomorrow ... for something I've already forgot! 🤯 Just finished up a starter sprag on a '01 Yamaha V-Star 1100 - shot a vid on that, so I should have that one uploaded by next winter, lol.

Love to see the DeWalt impact I have doing mechanic work. Mine only ever gets to run down concrete anchors.
