Though I enjoy the electrical diagnostic videos and such. There’s nothing like a good old brute force mechanical repair video. Sawzall, smoke, sparks flying, bearing pullers, bearing presses, hammers, and BIG NASTY made an appearance too. This video had it all, thanks for the ride Eric and family.

I cracked it so bad 1 day trying to get a steering arm off I threw a screwdriver. Problem is it wedged itself good in wood board of side of house. Another time I cracked it and threw a knife (was trying to cut off a cable tie) and it bounced off a piece of wood and bounced back into my boot. Luckily the steel toe deflected it and it got stuck in the outside leather part of boot. What did I learn ? Throw AWAY from stuff, less likely it will bounce back at you or get stuck into something.

Living in Minnesota and dealing with RUST!! The nuts and bolts fighting the rust is what got me to your site.
The sheer number of tricks you have turned me onto would fill a book. Or at least a med size pamphlet.
I dont even go near one of my beaters with out Fluid film or a air hammer handy.
Here is an example: Swapping out the bearing hubs on our 08 Chrysler Town and country.
One year I did the brakes and the rear hubs. Took me two friggin days to pound off the hubs.
I watched a few episodes staring Big Nasty.
This year I did the front bearings and the struts. Took me ten minutes to get them out.

It's a good darn tootin that Mrs. O. made that powerful lunch on the stove for you to recharge !!! And, she brought you that cup of coffee - Love is Grand !!!!! She knows her man works hard to provide for her and the kids and the dogs !!!!! She's a fine old school woman !!!!! That car sure was a rust bomb, it's only a matter of weeks till the struts start leaking, all the channels, bars, frame parts etc break in half !!!!!! If that brake shoe lining was any thinner, you could use a little Gillette Foamy and shave with it !!! Tires looked good. Another job well done in the "" Rust Belt "" of Avoca, New York !!!!! A full "Hats Off" to you, Eric....you da man !!!!!!!!

I have a greater respect for the shops that readily take these jobs that a dealership shop would never consider. As you alluded near the end, this car is not likely to see more than a year or so before heading to the junkyard. Gives us all an idea of just when to call it quits on a car. Certainly this one should have been a candidate for the chopper now.

Every time I get doing any repair work on anything, I fall into that "I might as well repair this too" syndrome... I realize you do ONLY what the customer asked for. But I can't leave things that need attention alone. I guess it was a good thing I didn't repair vehicles for a living. Thumbs Up!

I am only a hobby mechanic and I wouldn't be that in New England. I am spoiled living in Florida. Things just come apart with a little Liquid Wrench.

I'd like another series of videos where you go back and see how many of these "this car doesn't have another year left in it" cars are still actually on the road.

I had to do this very job on the same side on my BMW E36 318i for the last MoT (annual UK roadworthiness test similar to the state inspection) and changing the bearing was the easy bit. I was able to remove the driveshaft (6 Torx bolts hold it on the differential flange). I'd done both rear wheel bearings about 12 months previously and the car had done less than 5000 miles since then.

That's the one thing I hated about the '88 Subaru 3 door coupe I had where the everything is pressed in and I sent mine to my mechanic to do that work. Loved that car, 5-speed 4wd would go most anywhere until one day when I was driving and the back end just kind of sank, I looked behind me and could see the back wheel. I had had a feeling it was near the end so drove it quite gingerly, avoiding highways and just drove slower. I had an '88 Nova I was getting ready so I was prepared for the most part. Thanks for sharing.

I bought some of those Diablo blades for dealing with locked up (rusted all to hell) end-link sway bars and totally agree. They're the best blade I've used for cutting through metal like that sofar.
