Personally, I liked this movie as a child. Yeah it was nothing new but I still had fun. As an adult, I can see the flaws and the stuff I hate in cheep animated kid movies, but I still like it. Call it a guilty pleasure for me.
But at least its one of Sony's better films alongside Surfs Up. But hey, at leasts its not as annoying as the sequels.
You're right, Boog said it best himself: "If it weren't for you, I'd be home right now. None of this would've never happened. You said you knew the way back, But you lied."
As an adult I want Shaw to kill that annoying little deer!

I'm not gonna lie . . . This movie is kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. Not a great film, obviously, but it has its moments that make it fairly decent.

The fact he sings the tune Boog used to fall asleep to as a way of intimidating him was an underrated touch
It's like Madagascar and Over the Hedge mixed together and like Over the Hedge it was based on a comic strip.
Both Open Season and Over the Hedge were released the same year.
Yeah, so was Barnyard, Cars, Flushed Away, Ice Age 2, Happy Feet, Monster House, Disney's The Wild, and The Ant Bully.

Maria Jimena Figueroa I don’t think it was too bad, in terms of theatrical releases, most of them were..decent. Even stuff like Cars were ok by animation standards.
Believe it or not, but for me, Open Season was actually one of the better Sony Picture movies, which doesn't say much, but the only really annoying part for me was Elliot, the rest like animation, characters, jokes, art work, character designs etc. where actually okay. Not great, but at least okay.
Erich Scheidle yes it used to be one of my favorite movies, they were funny and all. I loved Eliot because he has a great voice and so is boog. And the gags are above average. This was a great movie!

I remember one joke in this movie that was kind of funny, when the hunter tells the cop how he accidentally hit the deer with his car while we see a flashback of him deliberately running off the road to ram the deer, but that was the single joke in the movie that I found funny, the rest of the jokes were all just gross or had already been done better by other movies.
I know some people defend bad and unoriginal animated movies by saying "they're just kid movies", but I remember thinking this movie was bland and annoying even as a kid.
I always found this first movie forgettable bland and dumb too. Never bothered with any of the sequels either.

I liked the 1st movie when I was a little kid but there were a lot of other animated movies I watched growing up that I personally enjoyed way more then open season now I look back on it the movie itself is mostly a time waster it’s not terrible but just average the sequels are just terrible though.

I like animat's score a lot better, I think his score is a lot more reasonable.
Interestingly enough, this movie was released the same year as The Wild, another animated film that has a similar story to Madagascar.
Weirdly enough, Madagascar's production started later than both Open season and the Wild. So Madagascar copied both.
I find it hilarious The Wild was actually made by Walt Disney Studios, despite it felt like a knockoff of the Lion King. Legit the jokes were so dumb and the plot was so corny. At least with Open Season it was more dork humor than anything
At least Open Season 1 is Lion King in comparision to the sequels.

Kieran Stark Kieran Stark Kieran Stark Kieran Stark Cars is pretty good, a childhood favourite, never got into Happy Feet, I liked Flushed Away fine, Over the Hedge is good, Ice Age the Meltdown is watchable.... but 2007 is better, Ratatouille, the Simpsons Movie is another childhood favourite and I enjoyed Surf’s Up.

Since Animat gave the film the Seal of Garbage, i might give it my own Seal of Decency because since the story was pretty awkward, the animation and the characters are wonderful. It's better than The Emoji Movie, however.
How though? They actualy do follow the character web, so it is up to a good start. The designs does follow the arcs that makes a character design good. So, it does come out as decent.

I think one of the greatest movies to have a stupid concept is Ratatouille. I mean, a rat that knows how to cook? When I first heard about it, I didn't think the movie would be that good. But after watching it, it has since become my favorite Pixar movie. Even when other movies came out like Inside Out or Up, I would still have Ratatouille as my favorite. It just further proves your point over how a stupid concept really can work if it's executed well, and by God, Ratatouille is executed beautifully. I can even say the same for the Kung Fu Panda franchise too.
One thing to say genuinely and weirdly specific about the film, it has some of THE best-animated grass I have seen in an animated film.
This movie is the guilty pleasure I would watch in the summer every year.
Why so overly critical? The movie was great honestly. The aesthetic, the exaggerated character designs, in the music was fantastic. With what they were working with at the time, they were able to produce something memorable. I dig it!

As far as comic strips with the themes of hunting and woodland animals, we already have that sort of thing called 'Tundra', which is basically an Alaskan version of 'The Far Side'.

I used to like this movie when i was younger. Even if there are a lot of awkward moments, but there's still a few good jokes.
Just so you know, I grew up watching this movie, It was an oldie but a goodie. In my eyes at least.

The Open Season DS game was a master piece though. There's just nothing else like it.
So how many SPA movies has Animat reviewed so far and how would they be ranked from best to worst?
This is my childhood movie! I loved it then, and now
I'll be honest, when I heard the first piano notes as AniMat opened the piece of paper, my heart melted right away. The next movie is not only at the highest of my favorites animated movies, it's actually one of the very first movies I watched in theaters almost 20 years ago (I was maybe around 6 or 7 years old back then).
Around 1999 or 2000.
0:00 I dont recognize that soundtrack. All I remember is Lose Control and Wildlife.
I have a confession to make: I really like the first film, but I’m not surprised that this is Sony we’re dealing with and it could get the Seal of Garbage for a lot of flaws it has.
Story
5/10-Open Season has your typical “Character gets lost in the wild plot”. Madagascar has this same plot, and so does Cars. The humor is ok. The story had potential, but this story was executed poorly.
Animation
7/10-The animation is the highlight of the movie. It’s even though the rendering wasn’t that great, some of the things like the textures and backgrounds make up for it. The characters look a little too cartoony, but overall, the animation is actually pretty good.
Characters
4/10-The characters were the worst part of the movie. Boog acts way too hip and cool. Elliot caused all these problems, yet the movie wants us to like him. Shaw is a little too nuts for younger viewers. I didn’t really care for the other characters.
Overall Score
5/10
With some nice animation, Open Season had the potential to become a great movie, but its poor story and weird characters make us want to return to civilization.
Recommendation-This movie could be a distraction for kids, but I wouldn’t recommend buying the movie. Just rent it.

@@kieranstark7213 I kinda have a soft spot for it as it is fitting to watch while camping. And yes, it does have it's share of jokes that work and some that don't, Elliot is pretty much the main reason why Boog was in this mess, Boog's character arc cliche and predictable, and the animation has shown its age. But, i do agree that i do like the wilderness setting and atmosphere, soundtrack, and I do think it has its share of quiet and slow moments. So, i do think AniMat did overlook at the part as it does know when to slow down. Pen Season may not be spectacular, but I do have a soft spot for it. But, hey at least it's not abysmal like say Foodfight.
Can you please do classic reviews of Astro boy(2009) and transformers the movie (1986) the original, NOT the Michael bay movies ?
That would be a good idea! Nobody ever talks about Astro Boy (2009), and I actually think it’s a pretty solid and understated film. (Given that I have no knowledge of the manga). I’m curious to see what Matt thinks of the movie.
Honestly open season never needed sequels
It doesn't say much when I have more positive memories of the video game based off this film than the actual movie.
He said that he's gonna say something nice to this film in one of Cartoon Palooza videos, and...we'll, at least he tried.
I hadn't seen this movie in a long time. I remember watching it a lot with my brother when we were younger. Looking at it now and listening to Mat's review of it makes me wonder how did I even like this movie.

Ironically enough, despite myself loving Madagascar a lot, I actually enjoyed Open season. Sure, it wasn't as awesome as the former, but I still had a great time with it.

The king and the mockingbird is the next movie . I would recommend watching the French version since the English version is more of poor quality.
