Love how Animat gets progressively more insane as he reviews every Open Season Movie.
In the first review, he sounds like he’s regretting it, but still sane.
In the second, he sounds like he’s drunk.
In the third, he sounds like he’s angry and insane at the same time, yet somehow he’s slightly eager to see the madness.
In the fourth he'll probably scream bloody murder during the whole thing, break things and foam at the mouth.

So basically, "Open Season" took the same route as "Ice Age" by adding so many extra characters, including love interests? Was "Open Season" really popular enough to receive this many sequels?
But on the (literal) bright side, the Animation Hat is back! I assume the next film is "Looney Tunes: Back in Action."
The only thing that's different between the two is that ice age started off well.
Open season...not entertaining from the start
The difference between ice age and open season is that ice age became a money milking franchise, while open season stopped after open season 3, then scared silly was made just to celebrate the franchises 10th anniversary.

Open Season was always one of those movie franchises that just existed I don't recall it ever being that popular.
But at least Open Season 3 was made to be the last and it is the best Open Season movie until Scared Silly.
2:04 Or maybe (this is just a wild possibility) somebody behind Madagascar 3 saw Open Season 3 and decided they could take the concept and utilize it better! (You never know, since the first Madagascar basically tool the inception of ‘The Wild’ while that movie was still in development, and churned it out faster.)

Madagascar 3 is good, Open Season 3 is the best Open Season movie of all time (that’s a fact not an Opinion). Also I like to address that I’m not going to be an angry fanboy I do have thoughts about Madagascar 3 and Open Season 3, but if I have to pick one it’s Open Season 3, Madagascar 3 is good but the problem with That movie is with the characters & length, ether way I like both movies but they’re not That Similar.
There is no such thing as “The Wild” or “Open Season 3”. Those were just crazy Fever Dreams Alex the Lion had while he was tranquilized in the first film. 😂
10:54 That's exactly what I was thinking! If you compare this to Madagascar 3, they both have similar plotlines involving the characters joining the circus. The only difference is that while Open Season 3 did absolutely nothing with this premise, Mad 3 used it as a smooth transition to help progress the plot of the zoosters finally returning home to New York, all while being accompanied by a strong script, strong characters and even stronger quality animation. As you can blatantly see, one sequel ended up being far superior than the other.
But open season 3 came out in 2010

Like I said too, Madagascar 1 is also similar to Open Season 1 as they both feature local celebrity beasts released into the wild and having to help save their new community from hunters. Apparently someone tipped the competition off.
@@WillieManga True. Though in Madagascar's case, the quality improved with each sequel being better than the last while Open Season's got stale too the point it's in the same league as the Ice Age and Hotel Transylvania movies.

Grant Awa One of my favorite scenes in the film is in the cafeteria with Shaggy and Scooby angry at Matthew Illiard for the Live Action Scooby Doo, Porky and Speedy talking about how hard it is to be politically correct, Ralph Wolf pulling a sheep out of his lunchbox only for Sam to beat him up.
It sucks how he’s starting both this year and last year with a seal of garbage

I actually like open season 3 and it’s my favorite open season movie of the franchise.
With most films, the original starts with the characters getting to know each other, the second puts said characters on base position and leaves screen time for new characters, the third one introduces the concept of love and it’s struggle, and the fourth one always has a random plot
The director, Cody Cameron, was the voice of Pinocchio and the three little pigs in shrek

Actually I would say that Open Season 4: Scared Silly would be the worst one of the whole bunch. And if you hated Elliot in the second movie or this movie you're gonna absolutely dread him in the fourth movie.

Dang, I actually wanted to like this one because there is potential for a decent story.
*P.S. Animat, if you ever read this. Here's a list of different story and character arcs that will make this movie better than it was.*
- What if Boog does want to stay with the circus, because he misses his glory days of being in the spotlight, with Beth from the first movie.
- Ursa could have been so much more interesting as a love interest. What if her backstory centered around the circus, to where when Boog does want her to stay with him in the woods, but she can't because it's in her family tradition to stay in the circus.
- What if Doug and Ursa were siblings, all being mentored by a stubborn parental figure, who is treated like a relic has-been. While Doug always fails and is dismissive of this parental figure. Ursa would always try her hardest and fails. Where she is in fear of letting down her parent, she doesn't know what to do. Then Boog stumbles across the two and teaches them certain tricks he has learned, during his time with Beth in the first film. Ultimately, Doug and Ursa both blow away the crowd in their performance, making their parents smile.
- Or in the case of the whipping, *YEAH THAT JUST NEEDS TO VANISH OF THE FACE OF THE EARTH.* unless they can make subtle commentary on animal cruelty, or make that animal stand up to the masters by snatching the whips from them and break the whips right in front of them. *OR* one of the circus clowns or kids sees the violent whipping and tells them to STOP! And trains them in a less violent way. IF NOT, THEN THE WRITERS SHOULDN'T HAVE EVEN TRIED.

I remember seeing this movie on Cartoon Network as a kid, and thinking it was bad even back then. That tells you how atrocious it is.

In terms of third movies that involve animals joining the circus, stick with Madagascar 3! It’s a lot better, dreamworks had better material to work with, it had the perfect ending to the franchise and it was great enough to be released in theatres! (In fact Madagascar 3 is my favourite out of the three)

Open Season 1 seems to have a lot of similarities to Madagascar 1; a local celebrity animal is released into nature and must adapt to an unfamiliar environment. And a lot like how Alex helps his friends fight off a predator species, Boog helps his new community fight off hunters. Oh, and both like fish, or at least fish-themed snacks.
It's because Ben Stiller (voice actor of Alex) originally was gonna voice Elliot in open season, but then he got fired. As a result, he created Madagascar and released it a year earlier than Sony
@@Natalie_Milana7 If that's true, it reminds me of when Bender was thrown out of a theme park and said he'd make his own. Except Stiller went through with it! Man, Stiller loves playing as characters in high concept awkward situations doesn't he? But hey, it's funny how that "ripoff" had much better animation. The only problem is that Stiller wasn't the director of Madagascar. Eric and Tom were... Ah, it's still amazing that Madagascar was better despite being older.
He was also in another dreamworks movie "Megamind", which is similar to "Despicable me".

@@Natalie_Milana7 The villain's redemption type stories may be getting more common, but when done well, I love them! We got Wreck it Ralph and now Bad Guys, and I'm pretty sure people compared the latter to Megamind when it was announced; hell, I saw that connection myself. Megamind is still my favorite personally.

For some odd reason, I use to love the Open Season movies as a kid. Nowadays, I can’t even look at these movies without getting a headache.
Oh God, if AniMat finds out how badly treated Scooby and Shaggy got in Looney Tunes: Back in Action by becoming into total a-holes to Matt Lillard years before he would be the next Shaggy after Casey Kasem retired, I’m pretty sure that the film’s characters section will be among the lowest of the Classic Reviews characters segment to date, though not in the same level as the Italian animated Titanic films and Where the Dead Go to Die.

I will admit that not all Direct to Home Media movies need to be bad. There's plenty of non-theatrical movies that even end up pretty memorable.

Open Season is just like Ice Age, where sequel after sequel would keep appearing. But to where as The first Ice Age was good, the first Open Season was a trainwreck from start to finish.

@@LooneyCartoonMan irdk for sure, but I think as long as it's animated and has been advertised as a movie, it's fair game for him to review. At least, that's what some of the things he's reviewed in the past (like Grandma got Ran Over by a Reindeer, The Open Season sequels, Bella's Magical World and now Looney Tunes: Back in Action next week) seems to suggest. If he ends up never reviewing them, oh well, there's still plenty of animated films out there I'd love to hear him praise or tear apart.

Stanley Barwick what’s wrong with the lego franchise? I’ve only seen the first two (the regular one and the Batman one) back when they were in theaters but they were pretty good imo
@@magicalranter224 I was referring to the fact that The LEGO Movie 2 was a financial failure. I suspect because the standard storytelling style of all the LEGO movies had become too repetitive.
Back when I was a kid, I was actually naive enough to consider open season 3 to be okay. Nowadays, whenever I look at this movie I ask my childhood self: What the heck we’re you thinking?😰
Also, about the next movie you are going to review, Looney Tunes: Back In Action, all I can say is that it was another movie that I would watch when I was a kid and I think it’s it’s pretty decent in terms of a movie based on looney tunes. It’s not better than Space Jam, but it’s still good.
