This movie is usually forgotten about but that's sad because it's actually pretty good.
Fun fact, the animation was so good, grain had to be put over the film.
And, the camera shaking was actually a camera shaking. They filmed it using a sort of camera on the animation set.
Well they actually used motion capture for the physical camera movements
Great review Mat. Hands down, this is one of the most underrated animated films of all time. I can see why it flopped since the story doesn't seemed like anything new, but the execution is what gave it that nomination at the Oscars :)
I also like what you said at the end, if Sony wants to survive, they need to see again what worked with them. But the way you said it reminded me of what a critic should do, point out someone's flaws; they may seem a bit too harsh at first (and that's the reason why some people criticize your reviews), but that's what helps others to do better.

Hell yeah! I love Tarzan and Frozen, I think Tarzan is a bit underrated. I know the soundtrack doesn't advance the story like, say, Beauty and the Beast, but at least its good. Can't say the same for Brother Bear.

Honestly I think the whole documentary aspect of this film is what made Surfs up unique

They have really come around though and improved with Spiderman Into the Spiderverse, Mitchells VS. the Machines, Wish Dragon and Vivo, but I think Phil Lord and Chris Miller have really helped their studio out. Surf's Up will still be in my top 5 favorite Sony Pictures Animation films because it's my childhood film.
Yeah because the future looking BRIGHT for Sony. Now they making Good films now...... even R & PG-13 rated ones..... okay :)
A unique documentary style of storytelling, great animation (especially for the time), likeable, funny characters, and two Green Day songs. What's not to love?

+MrWildcard531 Hey now a couple of the Disney sequel were ok (like the 3rd Aladdin movie) or in one case actually BETTER than the first film (The Rescuers Down Under) but yeah those were outliers to say the least.
+MrWildcard531 Not EVERY Disney Sequel sucks. Aladin and the King of Thieves, Cinderella 3, Peter Pan Return to Neverland, Lion King 1 and 1/2 and 2, An Extremely Goofy Movie, Stitch the Movie, Lilo and Stitch 2, Leroy and Stitch, and Beauty and the Beast the Enchanted Christmas to name them all.
I think it's doogal since it's THE WORST WIENSTIEN FILM OF THEM ALL!

I like how Animat said that this was the only good Sony animated movie, until the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse as well as The Mitchells vs. the Machines, and that they have now strayed away from their troubled past. How things change along with your now-buried hatred for this studio.

Now I know why I loved this movie as a kid and was hoping so hard it would still hold up to this day. There's just something so genuine here, like even though the story is really cliché it doesn't feel like it's talking down to its audience. The comedy is hilarious, the characters are fascinating, especially Big Z, and the animation holds up really well even if it has the early/middle 2000s feel. Gosh, I need to watch this again!
This is a truly underrated film. One of Shia's better films he was in. I really liked it. The side characters really make it worth watching. Lani is my favorite character. One of the animated female animals that needs more attention. Zoey Deschanel FTW.

The shaky camera does brings realism to the move...About penguins surfing for the sports of it.
fun fact about the camera work: In the special features of the film, they talked about how they rigged a camera that they could hold in their hands and move around in real time that would mimic the animated films camera. After watching that feature, it literally blew my mind. Niw it seems like a mainstay in things like Motion Capture projects like video games and animation.
Seeing as how your talking about the live-action equivelent of Sony, im surprised you forgot to acknowledge Goosebumps, which was surprisingly good in not only its animation, but in it's story and characters. The writing was actually smart and witty.

All I know of this movie is the trailer on Spider-Man 3's DVD!
If you're wondering how they maintained natural and subtle camera movements, they actually used motion capture. Real camera men would walk around with motion-capture devices that would act as the camera in the 3D space of the movement.
The water droplets were probably accomplished by creating glass in the animation that would always remain static in front of the camera. So water and sand could interact with it.

I’m actually glad I saw this movie when I was little.
Definitely one of the most nostalgic ones for me. This was the first movie I've been to cinema - to its pre-premiere display.
At one point during the movie tape started to go backwards, because of crew error.

My dad loves this movie, and I also like it a lot, specially quoting Mikey once in a while.
Aaand now they're making a sequel with penguin WWE wrestlers. From what I've seen I don't have any of the original characters like Cody or Z that they spent so much time establishing in the first one. They might not even bring back the documentary feel of the first one.

AniMat you should check out Kelly Asbury. He's currently working on a new film by Sony Pictures Animation that is planning on coming out in Summer 2017 which is an animated Smurfs movie. Now I know some people will love or hate the smurfs. But this time he's really aiming on making the upcoming animated smurfs movie faithful to the Belgian comic books by Peyo and went to far as to do research about Peyo's art style and the history of Belgium.
I recommend checking out the director's blog for the film called SmurfsProductionBlog which can be found on Tumblr. I actually have faith with the film.
The film is called "Get Smurfy" and will have no relation to the Live-Action films.
I honestly thought, when I was younger, that this movie was boring, and really not entertaining, I didn't understand a thing that was going on.
I distinctly remember seeing gobs of Surf's Up billboards up and down Los Angeles in 2007 when I went to Star Wars: Celebration IV. Ah, the memories.... just seeing Cody Maverick, Chicken Joe, Ezekiel Topanga and Lani on the billboards made me smile and anticipate that it was going to be a sweet film. Turns out I was right! Shame I never made it to the theater, but I did rent it, then ultimately bought the Collector's DVD Gift Set with the 4 Figurines. A wonderful, heartwarming film, and an underappreciated animated classic.

There is a reason why the film looks like someone was holding a handheld camera in this movie. It's because someone actually was holding one. They had a custom made mock camera made up connected to a computer and they had someone actually "shoot" the movie like they were filming a documentary.
Another innovation was that instead of recording the voice actors separately, they had the cast in the same sound studio at the same time acting out the film which allowed for a more natural flow of the dialog.
Having never heard of the film, I got it after getting my Playstation 3 for one of my early Blu-rays. Thought that I would probably think it was just ok, I was really surprised at how well done it was.

I really like this movie, especially the soundtrack. It really adds that little extra to the emotional scenes and the flashbacks. Its a shame not many people know about this movie or just pass it off. Great review and I honestly agree with all that was said. Well Done!

Actually it is kinda handheld. They used a special technic, so that they could kinda film the movie with their own hands. It's on the DVD extra.
Surf's Up is honestly one of the best animated features ever made. When it first came out, I was one of those people who thought it would be boring and cliche and almost didn't give it a chance. But I did and it is proudly high on my Favorite Movies list.
I think it's the unique execution like AniMat said. :)

DO not kill me but I actually like quiet a bit of sony animations movies such as this movie, Cloudy with a chance of meatballs series, and Hotel Transylvanian. But I have really only watched these movies from them. This movie has such a great charm to it.
I like most of the Sony animation movies including The meatball series and Transylvania. This one is by far my favorite. It is on my favorite animated movies of all time list. If it wasn't penguins it would probably be higher on that list (taking only 9th) but the way the lines on each penguin side body is unique and describes each character in that special way.
I love things about Hawaii and surfing and other shit like that, thus I liked this movie.

Back in my 3D Animation Class in High School, my teacher recommended renting this movie, particularly for one of the bonus features.
as a side note. the waves look good. because they collaborated with
actual surfers to make sure it was right. i mean. heck. Kelly Slater
offered himself up as a character. if you look hard for it. or buy the
DVD theres a special feature documentary on the creation of the movie.
its quite awesome if you like to follow surfing. and about halfway
though the movie there is a video clip talking about what it means to be
a surfer and trying to explain the feeling of getting "tubed" or
getting inside the barrel. those conversations... im pretty sure where
not taken for the movie. but taken from actual interviews with surfers.
Now, is everyone ready FOR THIS TUESDAY WHEN *WWE SUPERSTAR JOHN CENA* HITS THE SURF?!
