BlueSky doesn't always make the best stories, but there's one thing they're really good at and that's animation. It's fluent, likeable and incredibly colourful.
Personally I think BlueSky makes pretty good characters as well and the acting is normally great. Their stories however, generally need work.
I became obsessed with Rio ever since I saw it in the cinema. It is my favourite film of 2011 & and one o my favourite Blue Sky Studios films.

the one thing I was happy about this film they showed is about the warning of keeping parrots as pets like really how they get them from the wild some don't make the trip and die from tragic results

The soundtrack in Rio is one of my absolute favourites. I'd definitely recommend looking it up as the movie doesn't provide the songs the justice they deserve due to the interruptions. Also agree that Nigel's solo is my least favourite. XD
OH my god, when this film came out, I was obsessed with this thing. I would draw all the characters, get my parents to buy the merchandise, even after all that went, I'm still a HUGE fan of this movie. Hell, I even still have most of the merchandise now! I love this movie. And I will forever. This is the main reason I want to visit Brazil. (I would go to Rio if I had the chance, the only thing stopping me is the crime and pollution.)
Also I can't wait for Rio 3. (Wait, is that cancelled? I looked up some videos of new movies and I didn't see it anywhere. Oh no.)

UsoppFanGirl I love both as well, and Rio 3 is most likely in production (because of the success in both movies in the box office, making a big profit) and is rumored to come out around 2021 according to many websites. But who knows? Maybe it won't be a movie. If Rio 3 actually comes out I have no idea how they can extend on the story any more, but I'm sure I'll still love it.

In my eyes, this movie will forever be an underrated masterpiece. Despite Blue Sky not being the best of crafting compelling stories, they pulled out all the stops for this one! I just adore the effort the crew put into this film, from the story, to the pacing, to the writing, the characters, to the songs, to the voice acting, to the humour! Hardly a single thing misses! It’s not my all-time favourite movie from Blue Sky, but’s it’s still epic (no pun intended)!

Honestly if you look at the story in the way I do, it's pretty original.

It's about a rare species. There are only 2 left, and one belongs to his loving owner. However, in order to save the species, they have to release him into the wild despite the fact he is not equipped to do so (he cannot fly).

I think it's a good movie, although you are entitled to your opinion. And I agree, some really cliche things happen it it.

I also agree that Nico and Pedro weren't that great of comic reliefs.
In fact, they were kinda annoying, specially Pedro (thanks Will.I.Am).
This is one of my favorite movies!
Although I don't enjoy this movie at all anymore (sincse my favourite genre is now phsycolical horror and mystery) this movie was my childhood! I'm 14 now and when I was younger I watched this movie ALOT so it holds a special place in my heart.
All I remembered from this movie was the bird that can't fly and the fact that somebody said "cheese and sprinkles," once or twice.
This guy needs to hit puberty XD
Honestly, i've never cared for the story of this movie. But the gorgeous animation and fun characters is what made it for me. I mean seriously, the birds look so beautiful and move so gracefully, and the background design is so big, wonderful and detailed I could take a screenshot of any scene of the movie and it would look like a painting. It captures Rio de Janeiro perfectly, and they put a lot of work and love into making it, at least that's the impression that I got. Love this film!

This movie EASILY has the makings of a Disney musical. Which is ironic because Disney owns this movie now. It's so underrated, and should be turned into a stage show akin to the Lion King, but that will probably be up to the Mouse.

From the BlueSky movies from Ice Age 2 - Ice Age 5 it was more like sequel than original film. I saw that pattern when Rio 2 came out

Rio is one of my favourite animated films and my 15th favourite film and I respect your opinion to give it a 7/10.
I'd still give a 9/10 though.
Finally! Someone else who hates Nigel's song! That was the one part of the movie the RottenTomatoes rotten-scorers enjoyed (That, and "Oh, it's colorful!), and I couldn't stand it. My problem with the film is actually, why does there need to be a story at all? If you want to make a tour movie about your marvelous hometown, then make it and let your imagination of that place run. Don't rush a plot of clichés that are only there to be interrupted by juvenile jokes and the tourism angle. Brazil certainly had made tourism films in the past that do better. Black Orpheus(clever retelling o the Greek myth), Flying Down to Rio (famous for that scene with dancers standing on a flying plane's wings). The director, Carlos Saldanha, was actually a native of Rio, and he had been wanting to do the film for years. Originally,Blu was a penguin that got lost in the tropics, but then penguins took over the world in the mid-2000s, so he had to quickly change the species and excuse for the characters to travel to Rio. But the movie itself rushes his life in Minnesota (and his owner treats him too human-like), and it feels like the story's there to only stall us after we had just left Rio and...went back. I don't feel any point of including Minnesota, and the running jokes about how Blu doesn't blend into Rio feel just like running jokes. Even with a punchline, those jokes I didn't find enjoyable. Some of the songs were okay, but I'm no fan of the lyrics. No, what really made the film were the drums, and the variety is astounding. I want a documentary on the exotic percussion of samba.Also be warned, the favelas are actually worse than portrayed in the movie, and some Brazilians can actually hate or be poor at samba, but this movie chooses not to show any hint of them. A security guard rips his clothes and reveals a skimpy tank top in a G-rated film, then gets dumbed down to being easily tricked by Nigel because...he heard a samba beat and had to dance to it? Just, no. Some might, but this is the kind of over-the-top where I have to shield an eye and skip to four scenes later. It's alright to say it's a national music genre, but please represent the opinions more honestly than saying it's infectious and everyone has no choice but to move it, move it. That's like saying your not American because you love soccer. Some of us can like it, but we don't take pride in it at the FIFA because, face it, it was never our national sport. I'm neutral with sports, so can't someone on the bleachers be the same way during Carnaval? Whenever every person in the crowd is cheering, the crowd simulation gets too obvious to feel like a city of people. I mean, isn't there some tourist who just got back after losing her car in the closed roads (during this time, roads are closed for festivities, and crime is rumored globally to be quite high) and just wants to leave after one ride? I're like that at every theme park, so why can't some extra in the bleachers be like that when you still could have 99% of the audience screaming and dancing anyway?
Angry Birds Rio got me into seeing this movie and the sequel

RIO is my number 1 animated film of 2011 because it came out 2 years after Ice Age 3 Dawn Of Dinosaurs which is sill one of my animated films of 2009 plus Monsters Vs Aliens and Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs

Surprisingly, the Angry Birds game is actually more entertaining than the movie itself, even though I never saw it. But, I was never interested in this movie. Plus, the game does have one of my favorite cliches, telling the story, but in another characters perspective. It's when another character is in another scene during the main character's journey in the main story. Examples: Gonzo and Rizzo in Muppet Christmas Carol, the one scene in Frozen where Kristoff and Sven were with the Rock Trolls while the trolls were recomending the King and Queen to keep Elsa away from Anna, and The Lion King 1 1/2. Yes, it's not a real movie because it's direct to video, but it does have that cliche.
Unfortunately they made it really loosely based on Rio de Janeiro.
That's most for foreigners or people who have no idea of what animals we have here or that is impossible to glide from São Conrado to Copacabana... 🤷♂️

I rate this movie 9/10 and the best Blue Sky movie (yes even over Peanuts and Ice Age 1) I don’t review movies Animat style (Story, Animation, Characters, Songs) but here is my review on why I have this rating.
Rio 1 is a simple slice of life story that I discover more and more details of every time I rewatch it. The story, character arcs and comedy are at Ice Age 1 Level which is an 8/10 movie. The journey between the Blu and Jewel has a strong message between humans and animals as the duo faces the conflict of smuggling while also going through a character arc to bond with the humans and their bird species. Being the last of their species makes them both likeable characters with different tones of loneliness. Similar to the conflict Manfred and Diego had with the humans hunting there species down. This movie has fun romance between a Domestic Bird with a touching bond with Linda and a wild who sufferers tragic conflict with the humans, making for a hilarious and heartwarming experience. Blu learning how to fly symbolises gaining the courage to give up his anxiety and loneliness and accept love. Jewel has the character arc of learning the values between humans and animals through Blu’s influences. This movie still maintains the powerful scenes Ice Age one had. These could include the many musical acts such as Hot wings that blend well with the animation and give off symbolism and chemistry for the main characters. Not to mention the scene where Linda adopts Blu near the start reflecting Tulio adopting Jewel near the end. The best moment would have to be climax where Blu learns to fly with his courage to save Jewel at his own sacrifice. That scene made me sheet a tear emotionally. While I do compare Rio to Ice age I’d say Rio is even better than Ice Age 1 due to having more details, better animation, a great soundtrack, great side characters and a better Villain. I can argue that Nico and Pedro don’t drag the story down for they represent the spirit of birds and partying through scenes like hot wings, they are not just comedic. I do have some problems with this movie so I wouldn’t give it a 10/10 but I can talk so long about how this movie is way more powerful on the inside than it appears on the outside. I tried not to talk too long in this comment I’m just giving a different opinion.
I still love this movie with passion and consider it and underrated gem.

For me, the only good thing that I love from Blue Sky is Robots. Best movie ever.
