34067 Tangmere flies to the north on The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express - 10.02.24

- Following the withdrawal of WCRC's Central Door Locking exemption, preventing them from using non-CDL coaching stock, Railway Touring Companies 2024 season was looking in doubt. However, with a set of air braked Mark 2's, fitted with CDL, and using air braked loco No. 34067 Tangmere, the trips were able to go ahead as planned.
The second of the year, would be one of the regular Winter Cumbrian Mountain Expresses. This one would start at Manchester Piccadilly, travelling via Eccles to Wigan North Western, before heading up the WCML to Carlisle. Following a break in the border city, the tour would travel back to Preston via the S&C, before following a reverse of the outward route back to Manchester. Tangmere would only take the train as far as Preston before returning to Carnforth, however as events occured she was instead removed at Hellifield in a bid to make up time. This particular CME would allow for more shots of the steam than a London starting one, with 34067 being on the train before it would get to Carnforth, where the steam usually takes over a London starting CME.
Marking my farthest outing along the WCML, the video starts out at Lancaster, where in brilliant winter sun, 34067 flies through at speed, smoking out the station in the process. A waterstop at Carnforth allowed an overtake to Oxenholme, however the water stop ended up overrunning by 50 minutes due to a slow pump. After a long wait, 34067 comes through once again at speed as she heads for the climb to Shap summit. The late running prevented me getting another passing shot, as cancelled Avanti services meant I had little options of getting back to London, so instead the final shot comes from Carlisle itself, where Tangmere departs, still around 50 minutes down, heading for the S&C.

I never go beyond Preston/Leyland when i film. Nice to see it at a different location
Fantastic footage mate and great to see you as always. Excellent shot at Lancaster. Regards, Dan
Thanks Dan, good to see you too!
Great footage
Thanks Stephen.
Another enjoyable day out for us, great clips thank you for sharing
Thank you!
Excellent footage Thomas, that Oxenholme shot is beautiful👍
I hope you like Tangmere because given current circumstances, you could very well be seeing a lot of her this year.
Thanks Callum. The weather was certainly on our side. I chose to film this trip especially once it was known Tangmere would have to pull it, plus I've been meaning to properly film a CME for a while now.
West coast railways need to air brake more locomotives
@@jameshardy4354 Haha, yes, I was on it. Some of the braking was a tad severe.
@@Penfold1964 well at the end of the day it's there own fault they can only run one steam locomotive they are lucky to still be running
Brilliant footage well done 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks very much.
Fantastic loco! They used to be a saying; where there’s smoke there’s fire. I think it ought to be changed to; where there’s smoke, there’s probably Tangmere.
She certainly make her mark! Unfortunately one thing our cameras can't capture is the lingering smell that was there for many minutes after she passed.
What a wonderful engine, she had to be doing 80mph.
It was going great guns, permitted to do 75mph so was probably close to that.
Something different in her exhaust beat when at speed. I can't put my finger on it, but it seems like a 'harsher' sounding beat than i recall from previous.
It was good to hear it working at speed. First time hearing it so wouldn't be too sure if it was off beat or not.
awesome footage mate she really has her toe domn there loved it take care a t b syd😀👍
Thanks!
Good shots bit on the Smokey side tho😊
Cheers Chris. Indeed, the train was certainly well hidden at Lancaster by Tangmere's smoke.
Nice video, Tangmere sure had to make up for lost time on this run
Thanks. Indeed, it was quite the sight. Thomas
Stunning shots! she's really gunning it isn't she, especially in the first clip!
Thank you Julian. Indeed, it was quite the spectacle. Thomas
Brilliant video, the driver loves doing wheels spins, lol
Thank you Peter. It was certainly a traditional bullied departure.
Nice video Thomas :)
Cheers Simon
nicee🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉👍👍👍💪💪
Thank you!
Is "Tangmere" now the stock engine for WCR Charters because it has air brakes ? Are there any other locos in their fleet that have air brakes ?
No other steam locomotive at Carnforth has air brakes except Tangmere. It's why she was always on the Northern Belle runs. Until another set of coaches with CDL is available, it will either be Tangmere, or another air braked locomotive should one be available.
Hi Thomas, Great video,....Dave,😄🚂🚃
Thanks Dave.
