The drivers I started my career with were firemen and drivers on these back in the days. They used to tell me that they’d get 110mph easily on the south western and that, given the chance and a good engine, would have left Mallard way behind. I have no doubt they were correct.
Very well controlled wheel-slip, a characteristic of the Class, at which the driver must get regular practice and has now got down to a fine art. A very impressive locomotive and very well filmed. Thank you.
Absolutely stunning footage mate! Tangmere's a favourite of mine, and I'm not able to see her very often. This more than made up for it. Keep up the good work!
Many thanks! Tangmere is certainly a unique locomotive and sadly rarely operates outside the North West so it was good to see her. I'm glad to have compensated for that!! Thank you very much! Regards, Dan
I well remember, as a child, standing on Paddock Wood station platform waiting for the Tunbridge Wells train, hearing the Night Mail, and Golden Arrow whistles screaming as they raced flat out through the vibrating station. Often, the Night Mail had a west Country piloted by an L1 with 14 or 15 heavy Wagon Lit's sleepers and a few bogie parcel vans. Those were the days!
I'm a Great Western man but credit where credit's due, in the last days of steam on the mainline in the late 60's Southern engines frequently ran in the high 90's, their crews wanted to go out in a blaze of glory, which I'd say they managed.
We clocked one approaching East Croydon at 104mph on the four track going to a Schoolboy Exhibition with eleven coaches on. We were travelling in a Pull/Pan unit and flat out as it overtook us off the Littlehampton line. Drivers were not scared to break rules at that late stage of steam.@@r.h.8754
Haha I was surprised myself! I'm a GWR man but she did impress. I heard the maximum recorded for Merchant Navies was around 105 and it's great to hear stories about them! Thank you very much. Regards, Dan
In 1951, Cecil J Allen recorded Merchant Navy 35014, Nederland Line, on a run from Salisbury to Exeter. The crew had no knowledge of him being on the train, but Driver Puncher was determined to make up the lost time the train had incurred from Waterloo. They left Salisbury 19 minutes behind schedule, Templecombe was left 11 minutes late. At Sidmouth Junction they had made up all but 2 minutes and Exeter Central was reached a mere 3/4 of a minute late.
I was born in Lancaster ( in 1943) in a house next to the line from Castle Station to Green Ayre. I just wish all my photos from back in the 1950/60 were on film/video. Not much has change at Castle Station, as it was called, but your excellent clips, despite the crowd, bring back all those memories. Thanks; Mike now in S/Wales
Thanks for sharing your memories, I'm very glad to have brought them back to you! I'm very thankful to the organisations and individuals who ensure these beasts' continued operation well beyond their predicted lifespan. Regards, Dan
I lived at Scale Hall, Lancaster in the first half of the1960s. We used regularly to get the train into Castle Station and catch the steam hauled main line train to Preston and sometimes then to Southport. Sometimes in the summer we would go north to the Lakes changing at Oxenholme. The buffet there always very good ham sandwiches!
Thank you very much! Lancaster is a lovely shot but for some reason every time I've tried it it's been a bit rubbish lol. I'm very glad I've finally made up for the rubbish ones. Regards, Dan
Wonderful video Dan I thought about going to see her on her run to Manchester but a tad early and it would be in the dark so I stayed in bed😂😂 She certainly looked good and going a bit as well great work Dan.
Thank you very much! Yes its engine was running although I don't think it was giving much, if any assistance on that day. Diesels have a variety of uses, that being assistance with turning moves, mitigation of fire risk, providing heating to coaches and warranty against locomotive failures. However, the main reason this one was on the train was to provide power to the coaches. Having said that, it'd be nice to see fewer diesels on steam railtours. Regards, Dan
The diesel serves a few purposes, firstly to help with turning moves, secondly to assist in times of fire risk or for banking, and thirdly to provide electricity and to heat the coaches. They are becoming more and more common sadly but because of those benefits it's easy to see why operating companies use them. Regards, Dan
Great video! But it looks like the days when the CME always tackled Shap and the S and C with just steam on the front are over. A diesel of whatever class pushing like mad from the rear, will never be the same. Come on WCRC, get your mk1s compliant for us travelling enthusiasts. We all hate sealed mk2s. Could be on a modern train. No sound, smell or atmosphere. What's the point?
Thank you very much! And yes, with the new Mk2 rake the diesel is sadly a necessity, and they seem to go overboard on the diesel sometimes. Hopefully once the Mk1s are back the diesels will stay in Carnforth. I am also in agreement on your point about sealed Mk2s, LSL do the same. Regards, Dan
I probably don't see enough of her to comment, but I know since her overhaul in 2022 she's got the boiler of a classmate. Don't know if that would have anything to do with it? Regards, Dan
Why on earth is that guy shouting his head off in the 2nd clip?! Stfu!! People travel a long way to see these spectacles and invariably there's 1 douche who ruins the experience for everyone. A genuine question, why on earth was he shouting? 🤔
Still 20 short of how fast they ran on the main line in steam days. Flying machines. Great video. JG.
I know right! I'd love to see more steam runs cleared at 90mph but it's very costly to do. Thank you very much! Regards, Dan

Thank you very much! And yes the driver deserves a lot of praise for handling a locomotive so prone to slips like that. Regards, Dan
There's giving it the beans and then there's that!
Very well executed pan at Lancaster given the speed and perfect vantage at Oxenholme!
Cheers

Lovely video, thank you for sharing. ❤
You are so welcome! Thank you very much for the comment. Regards, Dan
Great video! She was really going for it at Lancaster! Saw it at Manchester Piccadily 👍
Thank you very much, yes she really was moving! I hope it was good at Manchester. Regards, Dan

Didn't realise a Southern loco could go that fast. Epic!!

Merchant Navies were no slouches either!

Superb example of BFB wheel slippage - but well controlled by an experienced driver!
Absolutely, the class are very renowned for slipping but the driver certainly had a good handle on it. Regards, Dan
Who ever the footplate crew are they certainly know how to get the best performance out of this old girl 👍🏻😄

That loco is gonna be used again on the 24th of February railtour which I will soon see a diesel loco headed that tour for the morning
That's it Scott. If you're seeing it in the morning you could chase it North. You'd get loads of shots. Regards, Dan
