Thanks Martin for you kind comment, it was much better when the tour should have originally run up Shap but due to the delay at Carnforth it became overcast although the winds were light, the return was well assisted unfortunately so the exhaust was drifting more cheers 👍
Good to see and hear (!) Tangmere working up Shap with the unusual smoke ring a surprising bonus. Great vantage point at Ais Gill and thanks for the wave. Should also mention the usual high quality footage/panning. Take care - Chris
Thanks Chris, good conditions on Shap and a good performance from Tangmere made for some good running, always like that spot up the hillside at Aisgill but the sapling are taking over so it won’t be long before a full pan from up there is impossible, cheers nige👍
It has been a number of years since the last one was captured and posted here on TH-cam. I commend you on the well-thought out caamera placements. It seems the spirit of Crossfell lives on on the S&C!
Great video Nige at some great locations. It turned out to be a ideal day to see a steam loco working hard climbing Shap with some great exhaust plumes. I spotted either yours or Steve's car near Shap summit so was expecting to see some videos from there. I was a bit further south at Salterwath and at Langwathby for the return leg.
Thanks Alistair, yes much better conditions than the last time and ideal for the exhaust, unfortunate with the delays but things worked out in the end, that was my car and when we got there there was still some mist but no wind so we thought we’d try it as it’s a while since we were last there, cheers 👍
Great long running shots Nige, the smoke ring out of that massive (diameter) chimney was quite something. Not much wind which is always lovely to experience on Shap. Interesting to see the performance at Ais Gill, I reckon they were conserving water. Cheers, David.
Thanks David, I’ve seen smoke rings from Black 5s before but not from a Bullied which was a nice bonus and very good conditions on Shap which was in our favour, you could be right there with not stopping at Appleby and running late assistance was always going to be given, cheers nige👍
Beautiful video 👍 In its working day in the early sixties , my comprehensive school in Woking was right by the line. So we used to wait for the Bournemouth Belle, to see who was pulling it. It was always 1pm, as she came steaming through and it was either Battle of Britain class or West Country and Tangmere was one of them. All the drivers used to blow the whistle as they passed by, such a beautiful moment when I think about it now. For your information, the school was Monument Hill C.S.
Thanks Steve that’s very much appreciated, that’s one of my favourite locations at Aisgill unfortunately that clear pan shot will be lost shortly due the growth of the sapling that were planted along the hillside, cheers 👍
Thanks David, yes a good display on Shap, won’t be long before you can’t get that full pan from up the hillside at Aisgill the way the saplings are shooting up, was that you both on the other side of the summit🤔 cheers 👍
That sounds better, they've obviously sorted the valve timing out on Tangmere. Brilliant scenery and atmospheric conditions for filming steam. Nice video.
I have only seen a diesel blow smoke rings before, nice bonus. You were lucky,. it was thick mist as far as Settle on my way to Carlisle and after there turned out lovely and bright and the same on the way home again with rain and mist.
Thanks Cedarcam, seen a few smoke rings from Black 5s but never a Bullied, it was much improved on Shap to the previous WCME but we lost the sun with the tour running late but happy with the conditions considering it’s Shap, cheers 👍
Excellent camera work Nige, as always. Illustrates so well the brilliance of the Bullied design as the 'spam-can' smoke deflectors afford the driver as clear a view forward as possible. As for the smoke ring ... well, how did that happen?! 👏
Many thanks Rare Rufus, yes with that amount of exhaust you need it going in the right direction which shows how well designed they are, I’ve seen a few smoke ring from a Black 5 but never from a Bullied so it was a nice bonus, cheers 👍
Thanks Dai, unfortunately the diesel was doing most of the work at Aisgill which is why the exhaust was drifting down and obscuring the diesel, cheers 👍
Terrific footage Nige the Bulleid really does well plenty of exhaust. Cant understand the delays though did not realise it was coming off at Hellifield till I went there and saw it uncouple.Cheers Brian
Thanks Brian that’s much appreciated, the conditions were very good on Shap for a change which was to Tangmere’s benefit, the delay started at Carnforth where the mains water pressure was very low so time was lost filling the tender which subsequently had a knock on affect on the return, Tangmere was originally due to come off at Preston but after issues on the previous WCME taking her off at Hellifield enabled the tour to be back on time departing Preston, cheers nige👍
You never know Jim, as Tangmere has worked down south before and I would think will again once the issues with West Coast coaches is sorted, maybe not through Basingstoke but somewhere near, cheers 👍
Thanks Chris, with the tour running late on both legs assistance was expected but as you point out most of the work was from the rear climbing up to Aisgill, cheers 👍
Thanks Steve, yes a decent performance on Shap in much better conditions as well, the need to pull back time on the return made for extra assistance from the 57 sadly, cheers 👍
Superb sequence of shots with Tangmere looking and sounding tickety boo although difficult to discern how much assistance is being provided as these re-engineered 57's sound much more quiet than the 47's when working hard. 👍
Many thanks Stephen, it was a good run up Shap with some assistance but on the Aisgill climb Tangmere was relatively quiet pointing to a lot of assistance from the diesel, cheers 👍
Superb video, brilliant. I love the Bulleid locos, it needs sending down south ;). Was the diesel ramming it along, I've never seen a loco climb so fast up the s&c.
Thanks for your lovely comment Graham, yes unfortunately there was plenty of assistance on the climb to Aisgill, the tour was running around 40 minutes late, cheers 👍
Much better conditions for filming today with a lovely pan from shap in the morning Nige, the return was not quite what you expected, but its one of those, cheers Steve . 👍
Thanks Steve, yes much better than last time, unfortunate with late departure from Carlisle assistance was near enough guaranteed on the return, cheers 👍
Another cracking video nige well done great camera work as usual I am really looking forward to seeing your next video I hope you get a nice video next time also when is your next video going to be on TH-cam bye for now Philip
Thanks for watching and for your kind comments Josephine, I think you’ll find craic evolved from crack originally and is a regional thing depending where you are, I usually film with a mate so we set up cameras and look after each other’s if theres some distance between us otherwise when I’m alone the other cameras have to be in view from where I am depending on the location, cheers 👍
@@nige7577 I found this, thanks for uncovering the differentiation…ex Wikipedia ”The word has an unusual history; the Scots and English crack was borrowed into Irish as craic in the mid-20th century and the Irish spelling was then reborrowed into English.[1] Under either spelling, the term has attracted popularity and significance in Ireland.
Such a pity they have to drag a diesel loco around, undoubtedly there are "good" reasons but such an insult to this magnificent piece of historic machinery.
Thanks Graham, the diesel would be on for heating and air con also to assist if needed, unfortunately this tour was running late on both runs so the diesel was assisting more so on the return, cheers 👍
Thanks for watching Pete, the diesel is on for heating and to power the air conditioning on this stock also to assist the steam loco if required and as both legs were running behind schedule so the diesel was also assisting, cheers 👍
A FARCICAL CON !!! You pay a lot of money for a supposed "Steam train ride" only to find they have added a DIESEL loco to the train, which quite clearly is doing a good 50% OF THE WORK as you can hear the diesel roaring past the camera!!! So just when life gets interesting going up hills like Shap with a steam loco, where the engine would have to work hard and give out a thunderous continuous roar, with huge smoke effects. The Diesel provides most of the power. So the steam loco has to do little work, and can almost saunter up the Hill. Without the normal grand smoke & sounds effects, you would have seen on this gradient in steam days. It also means that professional train timers cannot time the train & work out how much power the steam loco is exerting, or exact speeds over any quarter mile section. Indeed putting a heavy vehicle on the rear of a train (unless banking on gradients) was forbidden in BR days, because its DANGEROUS. So I certainly would never waste my money on such a Farcical CON. Much better in Germany were steam excursions don't have Diesels attached, and as seen on a number of occasions have reached speeds approaching a 100mph. Indeed the 02.0201 Pacific has reached 106mph in preservation (it has achieved speeds as high as 113.3mph in East German Railways service in the 1960's) It also has the largest driving wheels fitted to ANY Pacific of 7ft 6in. NOTE: I began Driving steam back in the 1970's before becoming a Qualified Locomotive Mechanical Engineer, & I've worked for many Railways around the World.
Unfortunately due to the CDL issues at WCRC it was air con stock that was on this train so no open windows which kills most of the sound for the passengers, also the tour was well behind schedule on both legs so the diesel was working well to claw back back some lost time.
Considering the overcast, it seemed to be a remarkably good day for "drifting exhaust" other "clag"!
Beautifully captured as usual, many thanks!
Thanks Martin for you kind comment, it was much better when the tour should have originally run up Shap but due to the delay at Carnforth it became overcast although the winds were light, the return was well assisted unfortunately so the exhaust was drifting more cheers 👍
