I had a 2003 Avalanche and used the midgate open with the glass in more than out. I bought it for other reasons and thought the mid-gate was a gimmick, but I ended up using a constantly. The big battery GM/Chevy truck is probably the most compelling EV truck on the market right now. For a 'use as a truck' perspective. I still like the R1T as a lifestyle truck however.
Lifestyle Emotional Support Vehicle. It's the cherry on top of yet another market failure, but at least executives and shareholders get to run away with the whole cake.
Agree'd. From the standpoint of doing actual truck stuff, like towing a decent trailer more than 100 miles, GM is the only option with the huge battery. Problem is, at some point you have to recharge that huge battery and, even with a 50 amp charger in your home, it will still take a while to get the battery filled back up on one of these. They say the batteries are larger than the hummers 205 kwh pack, and a 50A level 2 charger is "only" putting out 12kw. Rivian is also my preference if I wanted a truck to just drive around daily and do some local offroading or whatever. But I don't want a truck for that. I want a truck for towing and offroading wherever I feel like and ICE is still the way to go in that regard. For me, EV is still only good for cars and daily drivers.
@@Jay-me7gw Very valid points on the Lv2 home charging challenges plus your home needs to have that much load capacity. That shrinks the market for these huge battery EV trucks. Rivian and Tesla could have put a huge battery in their truck but knew it was mostly a waste. If long distance towing is important to you, get a diesel.
I own a ford lightning and yes, the sticker is high but when you factor is $15,000 off right away in Fed/State incentives, and the monthly saving (at least for me) of gas of over $200, it's cheaper for me. Also way more fun to drive! (My lightning was not as pricey as this though)
REALLY big fan of the Sierra EV. Looks great. Really nice interior. Solid powertrain. Solid Range. Solid charging speeds. Overall I agree it's one of the best trucks out right now.
Exactly. Not sure why people get pissy when they can't buy new. Let someone else take the depreciation hit. I bought my first two EVs used for half off.
Let me start by saying I’m biased since I own the GMC Sierra EV. I’ve got 2,000mi on it…and thus far I’d be very disappointed if somebody made me go back to gasoline. It tows my 9,000lb camper so much easier than gas V8s I’ve used in the past…and it will do about the same 200mi as my gas trucks did while pulling the camper. Unloaded daily driving to work I’m pushing 500mi. Super convenient to charge at home from 240v. Really loving it. If it keeps doing what it’s doing, I’m going to be an extremely happy customer.
@@danielk0106 So you priced a truck that can tow up to 22.5k lbs for 107k with all the options vs. an electric pickup with 10k towing... Why are you spending $100k on an electric vehicle with 10k towing? What are you saving? Fuel mileage? You could buy a Lexus GX 550 OT with 9k towing for $75k and use the remaining $25k to fill up your gas tank indefinitely. The amount of money you would make investing $25k would pay for your gas indefinitely. This EV is simply a luxury vehicle, for luxury people, who want the look of a truck. Don't try to justify it bro, if you like the truck, great. If you want the truck, go for it. If you can afford the truck, you don't need an electric anyway. It's a non-practical luxury toy, that's all. For the money, I'd rather buy a Raptor R, C8 Z06 or yeah, a 2500HD Duramax.
Andre, you nailed it with your question! It would be great if we could see the efficiency while towing on the tow hall screen like you can with the diesel trucks or gas engines. Basically very clearly give you an energy usage rating with the two different applications of towing versus non-towing.
I know I can't afford one but I think they did a great job on this Sierra EV. I might be the only one but I think the exterior of the Silverado EV looks better IMO.
I have a 2nd gen raptor and love it(not a EV fanboy)But I'm beyond excited for this truck and the future of Evs as range extends and prices go down. Price is high, but this time next year these will be drastically discounted on the used market. Love the color
I think this is the bear looking truck on sale, period. Great performance, amazing interior. Awesome battery and huge power. It’s almost perfect. The price is fair for what you get. People need to wake up and realize a gas truck, gmc Denali fully loaded is around $100k probably. The gas truck you need to spend $150 to fill the tank. The EV version probably costs $10 to fill it in your garage / at your house. So the difference in cost you would make up quickly.
I've had my V8 Sierra for a year now, I've never spent over $85 to fill the tank...$150 is a bit of a stretch. Also, not everyone has access to a garage or place to mount a home charger.
the way that body is set up, it actually gives me some modernized avalanche [late 2k's~mid 2010s] vibes, that was also a unibody design, had the ability to rear half of the cab into more bed space, effectively.. could fold both rear seats down, remove a panel behind them and the back window.. i don't really like how the headlights are placed, but that's me personally with how that nose is designed..
No need for further reviews as a teaser. This is the best truck period! I have had mine for 2 weeks and absolutely love it! I still have my diesel ford F250 for work and road trips.
Sharp looking truck, but jeez, the auto industry needs to get over its fascination with grayscale paint colors! Light Concrete Gray, Dark Battleship Gray, Ash Gray, Old Pavement Gray, Gravel Gray, Bleached Wood Gray. At least Chevy is painting their first edition Silverado EV RST in a bold metallic blue that makes the truck pop. Oh, and the $100k price is just stupid, though I put that down to 1) this thing is loaded with every luxe doodad, and 2) we're still in the early adopter phase of the EV market, so prices should come down as economies of scale and better, cheaper batteries take hold.
it's a GMC Denali yes it's expensive... It's the Lux Brand for GM trucks. Also the 2025 Model Year will have cheaper models, with the introduction of the Elevation and At4 trims. If you want cheaper you need to go to chevy when the 25 MY starts and they introduce the cheape WTs and LT.
I don't see cheaper batteries being a thing for a long time. Tesla has been at it for a long time now and we haven't seen a big impact on price due to batteries. Most of the changes come from removing features/cost cutting or eating into margins. There is still a lack of manufacturing capacity and very little has been done to address it or get ahead. Even if batteries prices half over the next 10 years, that may only reduce the price by 10-15k, but inflation will quickly eat into that.
Have to agree I think Chevy nailed it with the truck lineup but obviously, we have to get those prices down to the $60s. That's where truck owners will see massive savings not only in the car payment but in the running costs aka electricity versus gas.
Jog it just joggles the mind. You must be in car sales. It would be hard for anyone to take on a 130k truck on a dirt road. There has got to be affordable trucks for the rural guy or property owner. If you don't have a problem paying 130k, maybe the government should make you buy a higher end off road vehicle such as a G Wagon. I am kidding, if we don't get this Marxist administration out of office we are all doomed to 15 minute cities
Every video same complaints: it's too expensive. Just because you can't afford doesn't mean others can't. GM needs profits from expensive vehicles to scale up and build cheaper vehicles. When was new technology not expensive? Flat screens? Cell phones? New tech always costs more.
@@wydryflythis is another common complaint of little merit. GM is far from late to the game, beside the obvious efforts like the ev1 volt spark and bolt, they were first to deliver over 200 miles range under 40k. First to use the battery as part of the structure of the vehicle.(Tesla talked about this like they invented it, it was already in the scrappy little bolt ev) First to deliver a ev pickup with actual usable towing range, and only the second American oem to produce their own batteries and battery tech in house, they also produce their own drive motors and their motor tech patents are used industry wide. So much ignorance out there surrounding EV tech and GM. Understandably due to GMs poor management, but their engineers are top notch.
1:34 Out of pure curiosity, I just price checked those tires. 577.99 FOR ONE TIRE at a well known tire chain. So basically 600 a tire. THAT'S INSANE. No thanks. Even today I can buy a full set of 4 tires for most vehicles for the price of one on that truck.
doubtful. Also, smaller wheels won't work cause you'd have to recalibrate the odometer. Just because someone can "afford" the truck doesn't mean they can afford to upgrade it.
@@GKMess42 You do realize you can maintain nearly the same diameter by increasing the tire sidewall profile when the wheel size is reduced? Also, the dealership can normally change the setting for this because the same vehicles ship with different sized tires. The Silverado EV WT ships with 18-inch wheels.
I went on the GMC configuration page and spec’Ed out a mid-range four door gas truck that could be a work truck. It was $57,000. I think if GM could build a base electric truck for perhaps $10k more for an awd model, that it could sell well with the new electric car tax credit in place. Until then this truck will be for wealthy first adopters who will never carry a load of mulch or gravel in their truck bed.
We saw one at a charger in Gaylord, MI. GM employees were driving it. It's impressive looking in person. I took a picture, lol. We have a Bolt EUV, but would love that truck.
GM is building a massive battery under all these trucks and isn’t making profit on them. They are addressing range anxiety with brute force engineering. But, as a result, these trucks are heavy and aren’t going to feel very nimble, and they’re going to cost at least $100k. The alternative approach would be to make a leaner, lighter battery pack that charges fast such that fast charging on road trips is quicker and the vehicle is more nimble and costs less.

It costs the same as the Cyberflop with roughly half the battery capacity of the GM, are you worried that Musk can't make ends meet?
I have the silverado rst and can tell you it handles excellent. Without brute force engineering we wouldn't have switched to electric. We need that extra range. And these things can charge at 350kW. I went from 13 to 80 in about a half hour. Plenty fast
Ever try to charge a truck while towing a trailer? GM is literally making the only EV truck that actually does truck things. 80 mile towing range might as well be 0 miles. It's a non-starter for everyone who needs to tow.
200mi range towing that trailer is pretty good. My old 2019 sierra 1500 with the 6.2 avged 29.4L/100km with a 7x14 enclosed trailer, total weight about 5000lbs and my new 2024 with the 3.0 does it at 18.2L/100km, same weight but faster speeds. Recently did a 7100km trip from Alberta to California and i was getting 250-300mi range.
@@Sourman1545 Yeah, but, realistically, how many flat tires have you had at the starbucks drivethru where these will live? Also, the thing already only has 1500 lbs of payload. You throw 150 lbs of 24" wheel and load range E tire underneath and it will reduce that down to 1350 lbs. My Lexus LX570 had a 275/50R21 p-metric tire from the factory the stock wheel/tire setup was like 90 lbs.

As far as trucks go, I'm a big GMC fan. I have a 1994 Sierra. My plan is to get a used 2024-2027 2500HD. However I do not like this electric truck's exterior. The shape/design and I the color is meh. I also can't stand that the screens in these vehicles are so boxy. I mean I love a square body (1970-1980) truck all day long, but the screens are horrendous. How did they not look closer to the current internal combustion versions? Those look fantastic. Also, having 34" stock tire, GM do those fender sizes with the ICE trucks. Just a few of my thoughts.
It’s a great looking truck inside and out. But I just keep thinking that GM designers and bean counters must have decided that they were ok with just throwing as much battery as they could to get the range, instead of trying to reduce the weight of the frame, panels, etc. and then be able to reduce the battery needs while maintaining the range. In other words, GM made another inefficient EV, just like the Hummer.
Thanks for the info and review. Can you get a bit more technical detail from the engineering team about the drivetrain? Living in snow and ice half the year, I need to know if it’s open, limited slip, “e-lsd” locker etc. I can’t believe they haven’t made it more clear on these things, it’s one thing to just space it on a passenger vehicle, but these are important details both on and off road
I have a 2024 3.0 diesel and only things I don’t like are Auto start and square wheel wells. I did a 3.5 lift and can barely fit a 35 inch tire when stock tire is 33. Had to take off brackets, mudflap and still had to break out grinder.
I can't imagine why any truck owner would want a Cybercuck instead of this. It's definitely a winner! Thank goodness there are now several truck EVs to choose from NOT from Tesla.
It looks like a truck, the charging network isn't there, it's more inefficient (mostly because of weight), less capable off-roading (tests pending, but the limited suspension travel will impact this), and worse software. It's a very nice legacy truck though.
@@tripzero0 It looks like a truck? YAY! J3400 compatibility is coming. YAY! Tests pending for off-roading, so we'll see. Worse software? Hmmm. GM owners love SuperCruise. I heard that Tesla has yet to install EAP, let along FSD, in its Cybercuck.
@@Yanquetino if you are a truck guy, looking like a truck is okay I guess. Otherwise it looks like three boxes. Cybertruck has better software even without FSD. The app and integration are top of the industry. What will come first J3400 for GM or FSD for cybertruck? The extended cabin bed of the Sierra is a killer feature though if you need the extra space.
@@Abebe345 the four-wheel steering if the Sierra helps, but not having steer by wire is a no-go for me. Once you try steer by wire, you never want to go back.
I dislike one pedal driving in most cases other than stop and go traffic or if i dont know the route. It doesnt matter how efficient the motors, controllers, or batteries are, you're probably losing at 10% of the regenerative energy by taking it in and pushing it back out, as opposed to just coasting sooner and not pulling that energy out of the battery in the first place. Its how you hypermile gas cars, and you can do the same thing with EVs though the effect is far less because it is pulling some of that energy back into the battery.
The frunk button is going to get covered in bugs, road grim, salt, rain, snow, and ice... I think that's not good for it to be there. Probably will be hit by rocks and damaged or destroyed. Also 24" wheels is ridiculous. I'd rather have more rubber and air cushion. Thanks, GM, for actually keeping the physical buttons below the touchscreen interface.
I'm eagerly awaiting you to get this truck back to Colorado so you can do off-road testing on it. Will it suffer the same drawbacks as the Rivian - no throttle response on steep terrain? That is a HUGE drawback for many electric pickups I've seen out there tested. Also, is this truck smaller than the Silverado EV? It looks like it.
People seem to forget that EV’s are lease vehicles. The overall MSRP matters less than the lease price and residual value… if these lease for 800 or something, they will FLY out of dealerships. That’s what’s happening with F-150 Lightning’s, 0 down, 680 dollar leases with a ~73k MSRP…
A cement grey exterior with a black interior. It's all personal preference, but mine is to wait for the 2025's where more colors will be available. GM did a great job on this truck, just as they did on the Chevy version. Testers comment 'it's a pretty hefty vehicle'. Understatement of the year; the thing (like all full sized electric trucks) is an absolute tank. Highway barrier tests show these vehicles will break through all federal and state barriers easily at speed. Looking forward to his longer term test results.
While I do love my EV for my daily driver, I think I will stick with my Duramax for towing our RV. I can't imagine having to stop every 2-2.5 hours to charge for 45+ minutes to get another 1.5-2 hours of towing. Drive days would get really long. We have plenty of 300-500 mile drive days per year currently, which we can do today on a single tank (62 gal) of Diesel, and fill up in the same time it takes to use the bathroom and grab a snack.
Or maybe stick with the vehicle they already have? I have a rivian truck, got it as a placeholder for the Sierra, but am not convinced yet that it's worth the switch. Still waiting to see if the dealer is going to try and screw me over on the MSRP whenever I get the call. That's one huge plus for the EV companies with no legal requirement to go through a dealer network which will want to take a bite.

Well, good review. However, you guys hardly ever discuss home charging and the amount of time to charge from empty to full with the different rated charging capabilities. Level 2: usually 12kW or maxing out at 19.2 kW. (60 amp or 100 amp circuit) Home charging is done usually over 90% of the time. The only information I could find is about 34 miles of range per hour of charging on Level 2 (12kW). I am going to guess around 50 miles of range per hour on the 19.2 kW Level 2. There's a buffer probably built in so how long to charge from empty to full? You call the dealerships and nobody knows anyithing. Sales people have no interest in these vehicles.
Charging at standard L2 (6.6KW) it would take about a day and a half to charge (about 200kw battery) But nobody's daily commute is 450 miles. Or 200. Or 100. Or even 50. Most americans drive 40 or less miles a day.

I have seen some one year old Lightnings around $38,000, so I think we can wait a few years and get a steal. Those batteries alone are worth $41,000 in comparison to home battery backup prices. It would be worth it for the backup potential alone once the price comes down.

It isn't that much more than a gas powered Denali, and the fuel and maintenance savings are well worth it.
I own a ford lightning and yes, the sticker is high but when you factor is $15,000 off right away in Fed/State incentives, and the monthly saving (at least for me) of gas of over $200, it's cheaper for me. Also way more fun to drive! (My lightning was not as pricey as this though)

Just picked mine up today. Good to read this. I feel like it will be a great daily driver and trip vehicle. We will see.
@ Congrats. I’m up to 10,000mi on mine now, and I still feel the same way. It’s been great.
@ awesome!!
GMC is killing it with their new line up, but no way I am buying an EV for $100k.
FSD (+towing) makes it tempting.
But you'd happily spend 100K on a much less reliable and capable F-450. Or any other max speced out truck for that matter
i priced a 2024 Silverado 2500HD Duramax fully loaded. $107k
I wait when gen 2 comes out
Andre, you nailed it with your question! It would be great if we could see the efficiency while towing on the tow hall screen like you can with the diesel trucks or gas engines. Basically very clearly give you an energy usage rating with the two different applications of towing versus non-towing.
Out of all the EV Trucks, this is the best looking 'traditional' truck. The front of it is badass! And the rest is clean and nice.

So the difference in cost you would make up quickly.

the way that body is set up, it actually gives me some modernized avalanche [late 2k's~mid 2010s] vibes, that was also a unibody design, had the ability to rear half of the cab into more bed space, effectively.. could fold both rear seats down, remove a panel behind them and the back window.. i don't really like how the headlights are placed, but that's me personally with how that nose is designed..

Agreed all the primer greys are really boring
No kidding ... can somebody please paint this ...
Auto industry is doing it because that is what people buy.
might dump my R1T for this.. pretty sick. and the range is amazing.
Have to agree I think Chevy nailed it with the truck lineup but obviously, we have to get those prices down to the $60s. That's where truck owners will see massive savings not only in the car payment but in the running costs aka electricity versus gas.
why would they ever lower the price?
Jog it just joggles the mind. You must be in car sales. It would be hard for anyone to take on a 130k truck on a dirt road. There has got to be affordable trucks for the rural guy or property owner. If you don't have a problem paying 130k, maybe the government should make you buy a higher end off road vehicle such as a G Wagon. I am kidding, if we don't get this Marxist administration out of office we are all doomed to 15 minute cities
GM has lower models, this is the Denali trim level which is the highest
Every video same complaints: it's too expensive. Just because you can't afford doesn't mean others can't. GM needs profits from expensive vehicles to scale up and build cheaper vehicles. When was new technology not expensive? Flat screens? Cell phones? New tech always costs more.
This....
In a few years you’ll be able to go buy one of these at the same price a a gas sierra Denali which is at the least between 70-80k right now
And you’re right. Gym needs to sell these expensive EV’s to offset the cheaper ones like the Equinox
This isn’t new technology. GM is late to the party as usual. There charging a premium for trying to copy other companies who are miles ahead.
Known as Biden's America.
Get smaller wheels. It's a 100k vehicle. I think the buyers can afford the tires.
That's not true but whatever makes you warm inside.
Was cool meeting Andre today at the Broncos game!
Next year the base Silverado EV will start at $58k
Thats about what a lightning goes for
Take my money I don't have right now!!! This is a badass truck.
Nice truck but I think the Lightning still makes more sense if you don't need the extra range.
I’m with you but I’m biased……I’ve got a Lightening XLT and I love it!!!

Its a truck. Inefficient by design. If you want good milage you dont daily a truck or SUV.

I do like one pedal driving in sporting situations because its like driving a high revving engine, but you're not looking for efficiency there.
Or you can just open the frunk with the remote. In my area, we don't have salt, snow nor ice so that will never be an issue....
I'm eagerly awaiting you to get this truck back to Colorado so you can do off-road testing on it. Will it suffer the same drawbacks as the Rivian - no throttle response on steep terrain? That is a HUGE drawback for many electric pickups I've seen out there tested.

Charging at standard L2 (6.6KW) it would take about a day and a half to charge (about 200kw battery)

$100,000 WTF? No wonder the auto industry is in trouble. Total joke no matter how good it is. Huge depreciation and NEVER buy a brand new EV MODEL IN FIRST YEAR-but he won’t tell you that. This is like a “sponsored video”. Disappointed in this channel not helping consumer with real cost reality facts.
What planet are you on? All vehicles depreciate the highest in the first year then start slowing down in year 2 and 3,this is nothing new, find another Truck that offers this much luxury and capability for less?.
The industry IS in trouble.
It's called market failure, and EVs are only the scapegoat for wreckless profiteering
@@alancobbinunderstand the reality of market failure, such as Luxury Large Pickups
@@toyotaprius79 it’s An American thing I know as us here in Europe can live on a daily basis with much smaller trucks and be happy👍.
@@alancobbinEurope being flooded with Ford Rangers that are replacing the Transit because they apply for commercial depreciation write offs and diesel tax exemptions. And they are hardly small, a Ford Maverick would be more suitable
The engineer mentioned towing a boat. How does this battery do if you back the truck into saltwater over the hubs (besides rusting out the frame 😅)?
AVG PERSON DOESN'T WANT $100k+++ TRUCKS. JUST STOP IT.
It’s hard to ignore the number of $100k trucks on the road. Ford Super Duty’s, Sierra HDs, Ram Cummins, etc. I see $100k trucks all the time. From seemingly “average” people. And this is in Idaho.
@@jeffgough I see slightly older trucks that were purchased before the stupid pandemic pricing. I don't see many of these 'new' crazy priced trucks.
@@MarkWitzel there’s a lot of them out there. Not to mention all the Yukons, Suburban, and Expedition higher end trims, which all float in the $100k range. I’m not trying to say it isn’t a LOT of money. But it has somehow become fairly common in the market.
I love the Truck as much as the Silverado EV. BTW, does it have a convex mirror on the passenger side?
0-60 exactly what no one needs in a truck
People like performance, just because you don't doesn't mean it's not a useful metric.
Nice to have though
Fifthwheel is possible to tow? Thanks
How could it be the best truck ever if you can't tow with it or go cross country? If you tow your going to be charging every 100 miles or so and if you go on a long trip it's gonna take more time the a gas truck.
Can't believe they didn't put automatic running boards 😢 other than the huge cost it's a gorgeous truck !!! My favorite ev truck.
All that $$$$$ and no spare tire, WTF?
With spare tire it's 110 k
Not sure if you guys have done something like this already… is it possible to level 2 charge a vehicle with the on board power while you are fast charging? I’m picturing you guys charging the Leaf with one of your EV trucks while they are fast charging.
lol starting at 100k! no thanks! EV suck right now anyway... EXAMPLE: 300 mile range, when you tow, you get a 1/3 of that if lucky...
It's a decent looking car. The technology is still catching up with Tesla, and I'm sure some will like it. It isn't for me, though. I'll stick with my 79 F150. Nothing beats a classic.
