I was the lead artist on this game, definitely had a troubled development, and we wished we'd had more time to refine it. But still feel pretty proud of what we accomplished in the short time we had. Can't believe this was 20 years ago now, where has the time gone! Oh and the game was originally called "Bad Custard", but the marketing department was worried about some countries even knowing what custard was and in France it would have been translated to "Evil Cream", which would have been odd. :) p.s. I was also the lead artist on Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, also on PSOne.
Yoo, I grew up with the original Croc. Nice work there and nice work on the art of Kingsley. Also yeah, Evil Cream would have been INCREDIBLY problematic I can imagine. Kinda interesting though how the game was named after the antagonist originally, since I tend to notice more kid friendly games name the game after their lead. Outta curiosity, do you still work in the games industry or have you since moved from it?
I feel like this would've been a game well-remembered if you had half a year more of development time. The general presentation and ideas tick all the boxes for me, it's just that the towns needed more substance and less linearity.
@@FakYuhGoogel Yes, I agree, I joined the game after a year of it already being in development and it was in bad shape. I was tasked to try to tidy it up and get it into a workable product with a pretty short timeline as they didn't want to spend much more money on it, was a tough job but considering how little time we had I think we did ok within the constraints.
I kinda like the interpretation that this whole game is just the fox character playing, imagining the whole adventure. That's why the whole setup is what it is, and he's imaging the people he knows from the castle as part of the adventure. He is just a kid after all, hence he'd be drawn to the idea of a "true knight" like it means something without questioning how ridiculous it'd be to make a young child a knight and send them all over the kingdom to deal with dangerous tasks. Or maybe it's meant to be seen as a harmless saturday morning cartoon setting, they usually have these sorts of setups too, despite how little sense they make.
James, I don't know if you'll see this in the many comments you'll probably receive for this video, but I just wanted to say "Thank you." I live in Japan and it can get lonely sometimes, but following you on Twitter and on TH-cam has been such a great way for me to just unwind after a stressful day. Your humor, positivity, and more go a very long way in helping me. I think you're one of the best gaming TH-camrs out there. This is thanks to your honesty, snappy writing, and easiness to relate to. My job here has been so stressful, especially today, but being able to just decompress with this was just what I needed. Your videos are great entertainment, but they help in so many ways. I'm so happy to be your fan! Thanks, man!
I just want to say I hope things get less stressful for you and that you can succeed in what it is you do for a living :) you seem like a genuinely nice person, and that's kind of rare to see online these days. Have a good one!
CutBackDropTurn Wow, you are very good at English, considering you’re Japanese. (Sorry if that sounds rude.) Good luck with the loneliness, I agree about James’s videos.
Also an interesting fun fact: early sketches of the main character show that he was originally supposed to be a rabbit (which fits with the king and queen being rabbits) and he was supposed to have a female support character.
For a second, I thought you were looking at Tunic. There's like, 3 Zelda-inspired games with a fox as a protagonist -- Tunic, Starfox Adventures and now this!
Cyberbrickmaster1986 Star Fox Adventures wasn’t that bad. It just wasn’t the kind of gameplay most people wanted from Star Fox’s big debut on the GCN, but it was a good game on its own, for the most part. I fucking hate Krystal though.
Shooting arrows in the tutorial and not getting the crossbow reminds me of Half Life's tutorial - you learn how to long-jump in the tutorial but you don't actually get that module until Xen near the end of the game.
Mort The Chicken? Jesus H. Christ, mate, now you're taking me back. That must have been from the days where I actually went to Blockbuster. To RENT games. Ancient history.
How have I never heard of this game? It's freaking beautiful! It might have the best-looking art design of its generation outside of the Spyro games. This is the game I remember watching an older kid play on a family cruise when I was about 5 years old. Had no experience with video games (grew up with edutainment) and was totally mesmerised by how you could interact with the 3D world around you. "What happens if you go in the water? Can you go over there?". All I remembered from it was a fox on a beach, blue water and some bridges and huts. I still remember the intense curiosity and sense of adventure... and how I never was allowed to play it. My older sister got a couple of minutes tho. But now I fricking have the answer to a life long question.
That is just nostalgia talking. Even me as a kid found this game boring. And I used to eat platformers for days, even the ones based on movies like Stuart little, Toy Story and Finding Nemo.
Your videos are an odd comfort zone. I used to watch them a lot throughout 2018-early 2020, but fell off for a bit. Now I find myself coming back to all of your videos. Rewatching you explain these classic, oddball video games is just so engrossing and nice. Never stop doing what you do, Nitro.
Hey, have you ever heard of a PSP game called DEAD HEAD FRED? If you haven't it is a horror comedy action-adventure game with the main character being voiced by John C. McGinley. The game does have repetitive combat, but I think what really makes the game shine is its Story, Characters, and World.
I remember seeing a review of that game by some guy named Petronious or something like that, and it looked so silly and fun. I'd love if Rad made a video of it.
6:58 While most knights were born into their role (a role they obviously trained to actually survive in) the few that go there through hard work basically did just get a bunch of stuff. You fight as a peasant for a bit until you've looted a mostly functional and mostly fitting suit of mail and a decent helmet so you can fight as a man at arms where you can then earn money from going to war, and if you are sufficiently capable you can earn enough to properly modify your mail, maybe buy some plate and proper weapons, and eventually go into proper service as a knight. As for this game I remember reading an interview about the game on their website (yes, they had a website) which went on about how the creator's favourite part was this refrigerator which had talking vegetables inside, but that fridge is inaccessible in a locked cell in the final dungeon area... The game already felt hilariously unfinished, but I'd really like to know just how much was left out if the creator's favourite part hit the cutting room floor.
I have been trying to find this game for YEARS, a friend in 3th great had it, and I just remembered the lazy dragon's cave and the hungry town. Now I know all I needed to know. Thank you Nitro Rad.
Psygnosis was one of the biggest UK developer of the 90s/early 2000s, and have a rich histroy behind them. I recommend watching Kim Justice's documentary on it.

From what I understand the original concept for the game was for the whole thing to look like the opening cinematic. There was also supposed to be some kind of female companion character to go with the comment about Kingsley being shy around girls, but something happened during the development with funding the game and it turned into... well that. Honestly it's a fun, cute game that is honestly a gem all things considered, but it could have been a lot more. Still, glad I still own a copy from when I was 7.
I heard the Ape Escape music in the backgroumd at the beginning! That's my favorite game of all time! Would you ever consider reviewing the Ape Escape trilogy!? I think you would love the games and enjoy the progression of the tone through the series! There's even portable games you could review!
That box art is cute, but beyond that, this feels like one of those B-grade games that not even a remaster might save without going a completely new route, and at that point similar games already sort of fill that void.
"And what is up with this credits music!?" "This sounds like something from an EDM concert not a medieval game!" What were Pygnosis best known for again? That's right, the WipE'out" series with it's incredible electronic OST! I actually went to check the soundtrack to see if it was composed by Tim Wright who if I remember correctly was Studio Liverpool's in-house composer; Kingsley's Adventure was actually developed by Psygnosis's Studio Camden and the composing credit goes to one "Lindsay Alistair" for that bumpin' track, however WipE'out" had been around for four years before Kingsly so maybe Lindsay caught that bug.
Damn, you have StarTropics in the intro! I realized it before the cartridge was shown. You have awesome taste, I love that game and was really happy to see someone highlighting it out of every game in existence!

God damn it Nitro Rad! First Jersey Devil and now Kingsley! I have fond memories of this from a demo disc they used to include with the Playstation UK magazines. It was one of those games you always have in the back of your mind but you can't remember the name. So thanks for that Nitro Rad, I'll be hunting for this game now :-P
I played a demo of this a lot back in the day, and it certainly felt interesting enough -as a kid- to explore what little the demo gave access to, I wouldn't cross that off. For it's time, it looked cool and was fun to look at all the structures and models they've spread around the level.
Great video James. The game looks nice and it has pretty nice music, but that’s sort of all I think. Also, those things from the PS4 play room felt the Nitro Wrath.
9:00 It's largely because of technical differences between the N64 and the PS1. The PS1 just doesn't have the power to have a large enviroment filled with objects on screen. However the larger storage capacity of the discs means that you have far more unique assets.
Dude, I dont know if you are gonna read this but Im just gonna say that your content is so fucking rad. You put so much time and effort into making your videos, and you've been at it for a while. Every single video cheers me up, whether or not I am already happy or feeling a little down. Your cheerful Canadian personality is one that deserves to stay here. Keep it up man!
This game could have been so much more than it was, but it's still very memorable for me. My dad got me this game when I was a little kid. It was so hard to navigate and use the controls, I didn't get much further than the first dungeon, and then it mysteriously disappeared. After my family moved when I was in highschool, we found the game underneath the entertainment center, completely unscathed. After some time I was able to 100% it, and I need to say I completely agree with you on all of your points. I do think they should have gone further with Kingsley's journey into becoming a True Knight like his father supposedly was (what happened to him??). More story and character depth, better controls, and just a little more thoughtfulness could have made this game stand out as something memorable rather than just another game trying to ride on the legendary coattails of Zelda.
Always look forward to your vids Nitro. Remember seeing this in Blockbusters as a youngster and wondering what it was like. Keep up the good work dude!
Hey! Somebody remembers this game! Instalike! :D It was a game of my childhood,it's sad it's more limited than I thought. Maybe they didn't want to emulate Zelda but to create their own version of Zelda. Thank you for the video!
Man I remember playing this game as a kid. I don’t think I got very far in it because those memories a very faint for some reason. Maybe because it’s a ps1 game. I find that a lot of ps1 games have this dream like quality and I barely remember playing them as result. I do remember the music very well though and when you used it in the video it just brought back memories I didn’t know I had. I didn’t expect the game to be great but fantastic review as always. I’m finding myself addicted to your videos ever since I found your channel. Keep it up man :)
Old school Tomb Raider also used just one action button for both interaction and shooting. But unlike these developers, Core Design was smart enough to implement a holster system. If your weapons are out, the action button attacks. If you hide your weapons, the action button lets you use and collect items. And yes, Tomb Raider also had tank controls and platforming and it worked marvellously. It's funny how kids today struggle with this concept.
Ngl i do dig this game, would be fun having a remake of sorts to boost it up a bit and maybe fix some issues, i can definetly see potential on this becoming it's own thing while still somewhat Zelda inspired
This game is probably just the Zelda for PS1 Players, but it doesn't mean it's bad. It looks very underrated, despite the Tank Controls, the Switch Activating, and the Difficulty Spikes. Also, Kingsley is one of the most adorable obscure characters. He is Kao / Blinx class adorable. And gee, I wish Kingsley would make a comeback. I feel like he needs more love.
Tunic reminded me of this game. I played this a lot when I was very young and I really loved it despite its issues if you look back on it now, but no one below the age of 10 playing this game in the 90s would even care about the technical stuff, as long as the game looked cool and interesting at the time. 3rd person adventure in tight dungeon corridors where you're equipped with a sword and shield, I guess this is where I got my love for souls games.
I was the lead artist on this game, definitely had a troubled development, and we wished we'd had more time to refine it. But still feel pretty proud of what we accomplished in the short time we had.
That rave dance at the end alone is worth my like.
I swear I've seen that same protagonist in at least 3 other games.
2:57 My Life As A Teenage Robot much? “Welcome to Bad Brad, baby!”
The bald eagle knight is literally a vulture.
Whenever you where talking about coffee and root beer I got a notification that said coffee
That was probably the most improvised box read I’ve ever seen
3:55 do you just qoute me??
Im so proud!
The moment when you see a new Nitro Rad video but you have other things to do. "I've got 19 minutes and 19 seconds"
This game Desperately needs a Remake! Don´t you think so too? It just that there´s so many possibilities to make this game amazing And fun.
That one time when Link became a fox
Ngl i do dig this game, would be fun having a remake of sorts to boost it up a bit and maybe fix some issues, i can definetly see potential on this becoming it's own thing while still somewhat Zelda inspired

My fave part
I’m having a great day, then this video came out. Even better!
Kingsley's Adventure - play as a knight.
Balderdash!
The end credits reminds me of the abrupt trance music and dancing characters on the Wheel of Time game credits roll. Definitely worth watching lol.
You ARE the king of platformers!
you deserve more subscribers man you are so underrated
nitro rad, you TRULY are, the platformer man.
I love how it’s more and more turning into the Eric Andre show
FINALLY I HAVE BEEN WAITING 4500 YEARS FOR THIS
Tunic reminded me of this game.
This is the first video game I can remember playing. So much nostalgia
