    Sex and the City was ahead of it's time in these moments! For this list, we’re looking at some of the best girl power moments from the show, but we’re not looking at any from the movies. We’ve included moments like when Carrie marries herself, when Miranda and Samantha buy their own apartments, when Charlotte chooses her choice, when Charlotte takes control of her reproductive future, when Samantha fought workplace sexism and more!

    I think one of most powerful moments is when Steve had some issues with Miranda having a better job and having more money than him, so on one of the girls' meeting she says she wants to enjoy her success, not to apologize for it. I kind of miss that moment here

I understand what you're saying as in it was more (double I believe?) than originally offered, but for me this always had the vibe of Charlotte being just "more expensive" but not touching on the issue of actual self worth being directly linked to monetary worth.

    • @karar7796
      @karar7796 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Actually, that's "choice feminism" which rightfully gets a lot of flack, just like "white feminism". Not everything a woman does is feminist just because she's a woman. Feminism is about EQUALITY, not "choice". If a woman makes a choice to be unequal, that's the opposite of feminist. She still has the right to make that choice of course, but don't pretend it's feminist or something to be admired.

      Honestly, I hate how Charlotte screamed bloody murder at Miranda for giving her a similar judgmental look over breakfast. Charlotte was clearly insecure about her choice at the time and took it out on Miranda while still expecting Miranda to help her choose her replacement. If Carrie did the same thing, everyone would call her out for being a narcissistic bitch. When Charlotte behaves the same way, she's excused because she's a traditional conservative woman. Not saying that Carrie's behavior is right, I'm saying that it's not fair that Charlotte is excused for the same kinds of behavior while Carrie is berated right and left. If you ask me, Samantha and Miranda were the two stable ones while Carrie and Charlotte were both narcissists.

      There’s nothing wrong with wanting a man in your life. Not one of those ladies were better than the other really. All were successes and failures all were selfish and selfless at times, loyal and disloyal, accepting and judgmental, and all were in the same boat in a sense despite their differences. They were human just like us, that’s what made the show great.

      Women aren't dependant on the guys. She borrowed (borrow-intention of returning it) the money from her friend instead of taking some free money from her ex. How is that not feminist?

    Getting married to yourself is so empowering and it screams girl power and not needing a man or children to be happy. And I'm all for it. Something I'd totally do. That's why I like this show so much to this day. At the end of the day, no matter how much they enjoy having a man around, they have themselves and they have each other. It's beautiful.

    You guys did a separate video listing what made Carrie bad. Expecting Charlotte to bail her out of her financial problems was one of them. In this video, it's a feminist statement because she guilted her friend into loaning her money instead of taking it from a man that offered. You guys are usually great with your lists, but the S&TC ones aren't as strong.

      Her ripping up the check from Big is considered feminist because Carrie didn't want to be beholden to a man when it came to money. Everything after that was Carrie being a shitty person though, which the other video detailed.

    Never write these comments, but it wasnt the fact that Samantha had slept with his arcitect that was the problem. It was because Richard thought that since she was a woman there would be a bunch of drama between her and the architect, because women cant remain professional while working with an ex... In other words.. sexism.

    I love Charlotte but she did give up her job for her husband. She wanted a similar job after her divorce but she couldn't and you could tell she regretted quitting her old one. I get that she decided to quit to focus on other things but would she have done that without her husband telling her? She then gets mad at Miranda when Miranda tells her if she's sure and ready for that. I just don't see how it is a feminist moment.

      A woman has just as much a right to choose her work as she does to choose her husband. She made a choice and was ridiculed for it by others. But in the end it was her choice and that's what feminism is about. For a woman to have a voice and a right to control their own life, even if they choose something others do not agree with.

But I swear to god, when I started the show at 17 yo (at the same time my mom and my bff), I never thought it was superficial or "to liberal". It was bc it portrayed an amazing message about friendship between women despite their personalities and choices. Now, at my 27 I come to realize in a better way about all this feminist moments. After watching this video, I'm going to download the serie. I need to see it again with a more mature perspective.

    • @hurricanetortilla2569
      @hurricanetortilla2569 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      As much as I loved Aidan, I think Aidan and Carrie wouldn't have made it in the long run.
      Aidan is very organic, very homely, very much a family man but Carrie was, in her words, 'more Coco Chanel than coq au vin'. She was into parties and fashion and city life and Aidan was very simple and too good. (I respect both their personalities, however they might have been and respect their choice to live the way they did). Even if they did get married, I don't think the relationship would have lasted. So I think it was better they cut it off before getting into a legal arrangement.
      Also, the reason Aidan wanted to marry her was because he wasn't sure if she would go out and cheat again and he wanted to 'seal the deal' and make her completely his. That's really not a good reason to get married. If she's not up for marriage, that should be it.

    Charlotte quitting her job was not a feminist move and shouldn't be on this list. Yes, it was her choice to quit, but the reasons for her choice had nothing to do with feminism and everything to do with fitting into a mold of being a perfect wife. We see that she wasn't totally comfortable walking away from a job she loved and that quitting was just one step in the process of her slowly giving up her identity to please Trey. Miranda was right when she told her to get behind her own choice.

    Point no.10, Carrie didn’t have to register for her wedding gift, the woman owed her the total amount of her luxurious shoes. The woman didn’t have any problem with cigarettes being smoked inside the house, near the kids, but she had problem with people coming in her house with their shoes on!!! Wow!! But yeah it’s a great feminist moment to celebrate herself and being single not being married to a guy..

    The attitude to abortion here really annoys me. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely believe that women have the right to choose. But I also believe that truly independent, empowered women take responsibility and if they don't want children, manage contraception intelligently. Of course you can't control all circumstances, which is why women must have the right to choose, but that's a huge decisions to take. It seems to me the attitude here is that it's no big deal to use abortion as a type of contraceptive and that's just wrong.
