New 2020 Porsche 718 Cayman GTS review - the perfect all-round sports car?

On the surface, it might seem like a curious decision on Porsche’s behalf to fit the new 718 Cayman GTS with the exact same 4.0-litre flat-six engine and manual gearbox as the wonderful GT4, then charge £11,260 less for the privilege - because at a stroke the GTS would appear to make the GT4 seem at the very least expensive, at worst virtually redundant.

When I was in the Navy from 1971 to '75, glasses like that were standard issue. We called them "celibacy glasses" because no way were you getting laid wearing those.

Great review, can't beat the instantaneous response of a naturally aspirated engine for immediate engagement - both the 981 and 982/718 GTS are gems in the never ending Porsche sports car line up.
I didn’t know Elton John was test driving for AE these days....
This circuit looks like Estoril, but Yellow Brick Road would have been a much more appropriate venue.

This GTS 4.0 is the "GT4 Touring" we needed! We don't need to get a Porsche GT Car to get a 6 cylinder on a Cayman, this may just be my favorite sports car ❤
I just hope Porsche plans to build enough of them to satisfy demand because I have a feeling that this is going to be the one that puts the fire back into the Boxster and Cayman in terms of sales momentum. Thanks for your thoughts!

Finally!!!! 4 cyl engines were a big mistake.
Its no longer deserves to be called "718"
The 4cyl makes more power, more torque, and is lighter. The 4.0 is the "slow 718".

I still say I’d take the boxster GTS over the cayman as love that soft top for when you just want a cruise around

If you’re budget limited, would any options be necessary: just wondering about a GTS without options? Or how much better for everyday driving is this then the base cayman?

I watched this for a review of the GTS, and all i got was "it's not quite a GT4".

This Cayman is such a beautiful car, but the back of the car is just not 100% for me. And I'm sure it has something to do with the rear lights.the rest is perfect!!
And the GT4 with the wing looks really good, even from the back imo

Am I the only person who would rather have a boosted 4 than a N/A 6. I'd definitely take the 2.5 in a drag race and for daily driving.

Since Mr. Sutcliffe always has been a strong endorser of the 981 GTS, I would like to know how much better the 718 GTS 4.0 is over the 981 GTS. So, may I have your opinion on your %-rating for the 718 GTS 4.0 if the 981 GTS is 100%?
People/journo's are so down on the 2ltr Cayman.
Im telling you, the 2ltr Cayman is a far superior daily driver than this. I have a 2ltr and test drove this car and there is no way I could live with it in a daily basis, its too stiff and to be fair its built for the track so no matter how many "laps" they do telling people how great it is, they dont live with it year round on the commute.

Surely the most important difference between the GTS and the GT4 is that it's actually possible to buy a GTS.
lovely car! But when i sat in it at my dealer last weekend i felt it's just to small for me, gonna have to stick to 911's. But for the price this is really a bargain!

The sound quality from Mr driver wasn't that clear as can be expected. I use a pair of high-quality headset. Any more people here sharing my point of view?
I bet the tyres are the biggest difference you're feeling rather than the gt3 front end.
In real terms the GTS is actually £36k less than a GT4 as if you didn’t get an allocation from Porsche you need to buy a flipped one on the new used market currently circa £100k 😳 Cayman GTS and golf GTI for me. The GT4 does look better though but...
When you add a few options to a GTS it ends up more expensive than a base GT4, which you don't really need to add much to. The one Steve drove in this review had £10k of brakes and seats in it. It would be interesting to know the actual price of the car he tested.
Not sure why you spent the whole video comparing it to the gt4. Its a stand alone car, compare it to a M4 comp or similar from other manufactures.
Does those glasses come with an optional wipers for the British weather?

It will be a downsized console of the new 911. l could go into a lot of detail about the next release but suffice to say if you can hold on till 21 do!
This is interesting news, I have heard rumours of a full refresh next year but I was told this car would come in 2021 with the refresh hence why I bought a 981 spyder which I will be selling in 2021.. could be a wise choice.

It’s ok saying it’s 11 grand cheaper than a GT4.........but what about residuals when you try to sell the GTS? The dealers will make love to your bottom.

Porsche is quite genius. They kill off the six cylinder GTS and make it a four cylinder for the same price. Then they are revered as hero's when they bring th NA 6 cylinder back and charge way more for it. The Porsche way. I mean just listen to Steve just about there praise

Learn to pronounce the ‘e’ in Porsche, for crying out loud! There are no silent letters in the German alphabet. Motor journalists really should know the basics when it comes to showing a marque like this the respect it deserves.

@@daveyofyeshua They released the Touring when you couldn't buy a manual GT3 (991.1). Apart from that it's the same car without a wing and comfy seats. You could spec a GT4 with standard seats and remove the wing if you wanted :-)
No turbo waste of time all manufacturers are going smaller engine turbo these days look at the new 992 4s 3.0
This car will be heavier and drink more fuel than the current car
I thougt he also would tell somethnig about the hidden features of his glases made by Q.. By the size i expect night vison, x-ray, laser targeting, seeing all the girls on the cat walk naked, etc.
3 year residuals will easily balance out that 11k difference of GT4
