  • Rory Reid reviews the new Porsche Cayman 718 GTS. This version uses Porsche’s epic 4.0-litre, 6-cylinder engine to good effect, but is it an improvement on the standard 4-cylinder car? And could it possibly be as good as a top-spec GT4?

If you bought this instead of a GT4, how would you spend the change?

I would spec this with PASM, torque vectoring, and sport chrono if it is not already included. Assuming there’s change left over after, I would get a Cobb tune to give me that last bit of GT4 horsepower that’s locked away in there.

I decided not to wait and purchased a 718 Cayman S and have never looked the other way. The 2,5 cyl Turbo engine deserves more respect it's seriously powerful and the sound isn't that bad it's just silly comments.

There will definitely be a Cayman GTS 4.0 in my future. This is literally the exact car I wanted Porsche to build, it's basically a 'GT4 Touring' and I'm surprised they didn't call it that. I know it's not due out until next year, but I hope they get the configurator online soon.

AutoTrader Are you referring to the one that just passed you. The puny 2.5 l 4 Cylinder is still faster than the 4.0. Racing drivers don’t car what the car sounds like. They want to win. All this obsession with sound at the expense of efficiency and speed. Sounds like nostalgia! Next you’ll be saying electric is doomed! The world is changing.

Andrew Sepahpour except cars like these are driven 99% of the time on the road, not on the track, and by people who frankly don't even care or are capable of extracting the absolute maximum performance of an engine. Most of the buyers buy it for the thrills and that's where it excels

Unfortunately he missed to inform about a lot of the advantages that the GTS has about the GT4 like ground-clearance and driving comfort as the GT4, from my own experience, scratches the road with its front bumper and its underbody diffuser fins all day long as soon as you leave your well known afternoon drive home road and go on a journey through the Alps or Norwegian Fjords, and there is where those cars drivers cars belong... same for suspension comfort, on long B road road trips is where the GTS shines and the GT4 starts to feel wrongly placed. Track day and afternoon drive along your home road is for GT4 by a long mile. Road trip and unknown B road territory is for the GTS. Just to give add. perspective here.....

As the Founder of the International Engine of the Year Awards how lovely to hear somebody saying the engine is the heart and soul of a car, this one not least. Sadly so many people now don’t apparently even know what 4 litre means or 2.5. They talk in terms of PS as if cars are merely iPhones. What petrolhead doesn’t know litres and torque. Oh PS! Definitely an improvement over the standard 718, but is it worth the upgrade over a 981? Stupid question I suppose- this thing is twice the price and won't depreciate like the 4-pots. Not sure I'd replace my 981S with this even if I had the money though (which I don't).
Either way, definitely good to see a proper engine in a vaguely normal Cayman again.

Cost 1/6 of both incl oem+ mods and always have the right car with you. Not as dynamic as a P or comfy as the A, but close enough. No bragging rights obviously. The only fault with this car is the long gearing, which is an intentional choice by Porsche to keep the 718 in its place, compared to the 911. That said, if you can pass 100 mph in 3rd gear, the gearing is too tall! Other than that, everything else about the GTS 4.0 is damn near perfect. Some people think it needs more power (which really means torque), but I think it's just right for spirited driving on back roads, which is what I love doing the most. However, if you plan to visit the racetrack every weekend, this may not be the right car for you.

I was one of those poor souls that bought the 2019 four banger. It was my first Porsche purchase and I knew I had made a mistake two weeks after I owned it. I spent the money for an after- market exhaust and that helped the soundtrack, but I never did like the 4 cylinder engine. The car was quick and had plenty of power but I didn't like the very noticeable turbo lag that occurred until you reached 3K rpm's. I'm anxious to drive this newer version with the flat 6 as I have a hunch it's going to compensate for my woe's with its predecessor.

I was fortunate to pick up a very low mileage CPO 2019 718 GTS for a big discount thanks to guys like you. The NA6 prob will sound a little better, but the T4 motor is way more tune-able and and will remain faster.

Allan Miles did you not test drive it? I took one out and thought it sounded like a Scoob with a bag of spanners in the back. GTS 4.0 ordered for delivery October, just can’t decide the colour.
