Coach Andrew - These ideas work. I’ve been working at your ideas for a couple months. They are very effective and bonus= no back pain. I feel like I don’t use the body in transition. I turn back and then swing down while staying turned. That’s a feel. That’s not what actually happens. But I now feel like my body actually stabilizes me as I release through the ball. It’s the breaking action of the lead leg, as you say, The body is reacting to the arm swing instead of vice versa. I no longer lose my balance through impact. And it’s impossible not to swing slightly from the inside. The over the top stuff comes from too much body rotation too early in the downswing. Working great. Keep preaching these ideas. I think this will help a large number of golfers.
If that’s not an AHA moment then nothing is!! Congrats on finding a swing feel that works best for you!!! I couldn’t be happier for you! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Andrew. I came across your site last week. I am 73 years old and been playing for around 43 of them. When I started, my natural swing was to cock my wrists early and lift my left heel. My pro talked me out of both of these.”Keep your foot planted and forget the wrists I was told. I have never been lower than 12 handicap. I tried your drills for just theee days and have NEVER hit the ball more solidly. EVER. I feel, for the first time in my golfing life, that the club is in front of me. I have never had this feeling before. PS Never thought I would be thanking an Aussie but thank you so much from a grateful Pom. 👍👍
My accent is what I call Mid Atlantic!! When you’re hanging out with Americans every day…….🤣 Allow your lead heel to come up if it wants to. Use your wrists and arms to leverage the club. Work on your rhythm and balance and keep your back to the target as you change direction. Simple things will get you back to swinging the club well again. And, you’ll sustain it too!! Best, A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🇬🇧

Your concept of a feeling of fast hands and arms and a “slower” body has been a godsend for my back , at 58 and a 6 hcp it has made the game so much easier on my body and I believe I’m a better ball striker because of it
30 year coach here .. thank you for emphasizing being open to finding the swing style that works for you ..lots of students don't have the flexibility of tour players and as you know have a way easier time hitting a ball a long way using hands and arms blended with body

Just found your channel. I’m going to concentrate on these two drills. If in a month I see my golf game soar, then I’m coming to see you for in person lessons in February. I’ll drive from nj. Hope this works for me.
As a fellow PGA teaching professional I want to tell you how much I not only agree with your teaching method/style/swing, but that you have a great way of explaining it. You always acknowledge that there are other ways to swing a golf club, and that there is a body driven swing but it is more complex and generally not for the average golfer, so don't bother chasing it. But I really like how you explain that, yes, the body is somewhat involved, but not as much as people understand. And yes, the arms and wrists play an important/critical role, but that there is a marriage/synchronization/blending of upper body, lower body, arms and wrists. Keep up the good work and realize you have a fan in Toronto Canada.
David, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. It means a lot when I get comments from my peers. I’m walking a fine line between the body driven coaches and the CFI guys. I just don’t believe it’s either/or. I think a sprinkle of both based on the student you’re coaching makes a lot of sense. Elite golfers with hyper mobility looking for more club face stability v Recreational golfers that are inflexible looking for more speed! 80% (+) of course fall into the latter so that’s where I’ve parked myself!! Welcome aboard and thanks again for checking in! Best, A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
@@AndrewEmeryGolf the vast majority of students I teach (over 30 years worth) generally struggle with the most basic components, which is why I also teach what you are teaching, not withstanding the Golf HOF is filled with that exact swing. If they present to me a body driven swing we will work together on that method, buts it’s rare. Lastly, both swings require learning, regardless of method, so I teach what I think is less difficult. Thanks Andrew. I’ve been working on your drills for a couple of weeks now. It’s really helped my ball striking but tremendously helped me to play without pain. I’ve been able to play back to back days now which I would never do before because of pain in my back. Thanks again!

New to channel; so useful for us senior golfers, and agree so many other channels have you going through impossible movements yet watching Scheffler his looks closer to what you teach
Exceptional content. My father and I just finished a great practice session in the backyard working on these feels. We’ve both been letting the club get behind us too much rather than up in the backswing. This more vertical backswing has us standing closer to the ball.
Clear, concise, and understandable video. I especially appreciated the linear to angular transition portion. Unfortunately, my knee is wacked and I cannot do full swings right now. Hope to review this video after a knee replacement!
I had an over the top swing. Then started to practice dropping the hands more and less body. It took about 2 years of practice before I saw results. Initially my strike got worse and just gave up on it. Every instructional video talks about it so I knew I had to keep with it. I just want to encourage others that you need to grind some practice time with this. It will improve your strike. This is not a few sessions at the range. We'll it wasn't for me. I loved the mustard reference...lol made me laugh. My kids would not like it. I'd have to change to something like put some chocolate sauce on it. Thanks again for the videos.
Just subscribed, this is one of the best golf lessons I have ever seen for all golfers beginners and advanced ones. Fantastic content, which Ping irons are you using?
This concept/thought changed my game from 15 hcp to single in a year of practice. I spent years trying to use the ground/body driven and often would spin or get stuck. Feeling the arms dropping first is such a game changer. If you see this do not jump around on YT stick with a concept that works for you as this does for me. Great video!
Andrew, I have been checking you out for a couple of months now - I'm subscribed and committing now to your paradigm. I have struggled mightily with getting to my left side - when I play poorly (most of the time), my weight is back and I fall back. The sequence of my swing changes from one swing to the next, trying to "fix it". I'm hoping the tips/drills in this video (L to L and Closer drill) give me the platform to do just that. I'm heading for the Sim now to get started.

Great video! When doing the closer drill, I understand we are trying to keep our back to the target. Does that mean the path would be much more out to the right than the hitch hiker drill? Thanks for the instruction!!
You’re going to be rotating your body a lot more than you feel!! The arms drop and you FEEL closed but it’s a usually a perfect blend of verticals and horizontals which works great! The feet together hitchhiker drill is less dynamic but in both cases you’re likely to hit the inside of the golf ball and eliminate any over the top! Best, Coach A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
Another great Job coach !! Just two questios to take the drlls to the range. 1. from the top of the backswing when you say low arms (verticals ) where point the grip on that initial way of the downswing (trai foot, ball 🤷♂️) ? 2. And from there where do you “feel” you realease the club (on video looks pretty on líne but you draw it amazingly 🤩). greetings from a fan of your work 😜🏌🏽♂️🇦🇷🇦🇷
Butt and of club at ball target line in transition. But they feel may vary depending on the students swing pattern! Start to release the club around P5 without spinning the body. Simply allow your arms to employ your body as you continues to turn through the ball. Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
New to the channel. Great info. Thanks for sharing. I’m 66 yo and have spun my right shoulder and hip almost all of my golfing life. I hit a bunch of balls this morning using these two drills. I crushed the ball using the closure drill. Felt so much room to swing the arms. However, when using a normal stance, I could feel my old “spin” habits return. I’m considering using the closure stance on the golf course since I hit the ball so much better. Thoughts?
Hi Coach. This is a great drill. Very effective. I am a 77 year old who has been struggling with. "body" swing for a few years. I have always had trouble rotating; always got balk bound and my body essentially stopped once I struck the ball. Just discovered your channel and your videos on linear and angular momentum have been a revelation for me. I am actually hitting through the ball rather than at it. Quick question on wedges, which I struggle with. Do you incorporate linear momentum on your wedges at different speeds (back swing width) depending on yardage to target? Do you have a video that covers that? Thank you so much. I am really enjoying and benefitting from your content.
Building a wedge matrix is really important. The backswing remains fairly constant. It’s the through swing that varies in my opinion! Matching up the length of your swing to the trail foot is critical. I’ve attached a lesson that hopefully explains in simple terms the concept! The release should feel the same. Don’t transition spin! Best, Coach A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻 th-cam.com/video/2IasfTCDhl8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=uW8HONTq6scpwY6L
Andrew, two questions for you. First off, I sent an email to you about a week ago regarding your online lessons. I never heard back. Second, I think in theory I understand the moving the arms faster, but I am really throwing the club with the hands too early it seems. The path seems good. Love the drill also.
My apologies! I just did a quick audit and don’t see your email in my inbox or junk box. Shoot me another when your schedule permits and I’ll send you instructions. Best, A. Andrewemery.golf@gmail.com
Hi Andrew, love the content and I completely agree with you philosophy on the swing. I’m having wonderful results from the “unpacking” of the arm hand structure. I do get out of sort on occasion with it and am just wondering once at the top is the feel literally arms straight down behind without the feeling of turning? Hope that question makes sense.
Hi Jason!! That depends on the golfer! 80% of golfers get horizontal (turn) too early. In other words they transition spin which throws the club out and over the plane. IF you hook the golf ball then dropping the arms may not be as helpful! People that hook the ball usually have too much vertical (tilt) and not enough horizontal (turn) as they change direction. IF you’re like 80% of golfers that slice and/ or struggle with speed then, yes….Stall the spin phase and drop the arms!! Hope that helps! Coach A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
I was wondering, is there a third element to the closer drill (apart from path and weight distribution) ? I saw you keeping a pretty nice spine angle through impact at 11:30 in the combo
Question for Andrew or others who've worked at Hitchhiker Drill: I'm 65 yr old male, reasonably fit, decent mobility. What clubhead speed or carry distance with 7-iron should I expect when doing HH Drill that would indicate I am reasonably effective at delivering angular speed to the ball? Thanks.
That’s answer is relative to where you started with a 7 iron. In my experience coaching I’ve seen as much as 2/3 clubs longer. I would expect at least 10-12 yards longer than your original distance with less effort is a fair and realistic goal with a draw release pattern using angular momentum. As a general rule 70mph club head speed would be 140-150yds and 80mph 155-165yds. There are of course multiple factors that will influence that - strike quality, dynamic loft, technology, strength etc. Best, Coach A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
@@AndrewEmeryGolf Appreciate the info, it gives me a rough guide to monitor improvement. After several serious attempts to fix, I still release all angles too early and my 7i full swing, at 95% effort, yields just 68mph club speed and only carries 130 yards. I'm not fixated on distance but I know my poor sequence and early release are keeping me from playing my best. Your videos have helped me understand, in a straight forward and clear way, that any golfer can achieve good sequencing, an articulating release, with minimal tension. I am encouraged once again to work at becoming a lot more efficient at delivering club speed where it counts. Look forward to watching all your videos.
It’s likely a club face to path issue. Rotate the toe of the club down earlier from behind you! You’re likely dragging the handle too much. Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
For a push draw release pattern you want to shoot for 5 degrees inside out! However, exaggerating (initially) IF you struggle with over the top is essential! If you’re 10-15 degrees right when you play golf then that’s going to be a problem. You should never be aimed, aligned and or swinging right of a fairway of green in my opinion. It’s too far inside out and would require an exceedingly excessive rate of closure. Nothing worse than hitting a dead straight golf shot into the trees! If you’re a slicer - Start extreme and work your way back to your target line paying attention to your ball flight!! Hope that helps! Best, Coach A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
Thank you so much. I practised those two drills yesterday. 50 balls. Just finished playing. Played the best golf I’ve ever played. 9 holes, because I’m old. Parred the two hardest holes on the course. Hope it’s not a WOOD. works only one day. My playing buddy said it was the best I’ve ever played! Thanks😊

When I do the old L. drill or the hitchhiker drill I hit pulls to the left and your shots are dead straight or with just a slight little draw. What am I doing wrong? Could you help please?
Start by putting a head cover slightly outside the ball. Miss the head over! It’s quite possible that you need to swing a little more from the inside!! A. ⛳️🏌️♂️👍🏻
Wide early leads to narrow late!! Create your arms structure at lead arm parallel and then apply pressure against the grip away from your trail shoulder as you complete your pivot! Best, A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
extreme closed set up [closer drill], weight forward, feet together L to L release,..its Jim Venetos with a release. Jim does not teach release and the reason I quit him and pissed him off. I blocked-pushed many shots and he blamed horizontal right shoulder coming over into impact.I'm a 5 handicap and 69 years old. Please understand your "Mustard" emphasis can produce horizontal" kill" tendencies?? Very difficult to "keep back to target" when you are espousing "mustard"..the drop into your box has to be vertically "soft" not "mustardy" I think?? For example, very hard to add "Mustard" with feet together drill and stay balanced? Please make a video on how to " USE MUSTARD and STAY CLOSED THRU IMPACT".. Same as KEEPING BACK TO TARGET that you mention and which is perpetually mentioned on TH-cam [ but cant be explained by anyone but Venetos] . Will your BOX DROP Vertical With L to L Mustard keep the majority of us CLOSED?? I think you are the best teacher on TH-cam
Thanks for your comment. And, the summary - The “Box Drop Vertical with L to L Mustard!!” That’s quite the hook!! 🤣 I don’t like to over-instruct but I believe that the vast majority of golfers need to educate their hands arms and find a release pattern that works for them. Whenever you’re ready let’s do that online lesson we discussed. I’m confident I can help! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
Great advice. Crazy as it may sound, I played a round with my trail foot back and the results were very good. Probably counteracts a decade of coming over the top.

Great video 😊
Thank you sir! 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
Great drill, is the drill the same for fairway woods?
Yes sir!! All clubs!

Brilliant demo and description as always. That box, will you accept $40? 🙂😂
Ha!! But wait, buy one now and I’ll throw in second box for free!! Thanks for watching! Coach A.
Thoughts?
Couldn’t agree more! Find what works best for you! Welcome aboard!

Hi Andrew, does this apply to all irons & Driver pls. These drills are definitely improving my game. Great easy to follow instruction. Thanks
Different set up but yes, they all apply!

Best, A.

I can do the hitchhiker drill fine. How do I incorporate that feel into the full swing? That’s where thing tend to fall apart. Thanks
Tomorrow mornings video will explain how!! Best, Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻

I was wondering, is there a third element to the closer drill (apart from path and weight distribution) ? I saw you keeping a pretty nice spine angle through impact at 11:30 in the combo
It helps you keep your pelvis behind you and “in its depth!” // A great drill for those golfers struggling with early extension!

Question for Andrew or others who've worked at Hitchhiker Drill:
I'm 65 yr old male, reasonably fit, decent mobility.
Hi Andrew, what would cause push fades with this split leg drill. It gets to almost a slice when I do a regular swing.
It’s likely a club face to path issue. Rotate the toe of the club down earlier from behind you! You’re likely dragging the handle too much. Coach A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
On the above drills , am I still swinging on a path 10-15 degrees to the right?
Thanks😊
Awesome!!👏
Hi Andrew, do you do online lessons?
Hi Jason, yes! I do online coaching every day as well as in person lessons. Shoot me an email at:

Once I hear from you I’ll email you instructions on how best to proceed! Best, A. ⛳️🏌️♂️🙏🏻
A. ⛳️🏌️♂️👍🏻
Could I be release my club looks like it is closed at impact / face is closing before I hit the ball? Your Thoughts.
👏👏👏👍
Thank you! 🙏🏻

You don't fully extent your arms on take back😅
Wide early leads to narrow late!! Create your arms structure at lead arm parallel and then apply pressure against the grip away from your trail shoulder as you complete your pivot!

extreme closed set up [closer drill], weight forward, feet together L to L release,..its Jim Venetos with a release.
Not crazy at all!! If there’s one thing Ive learned over the years. It’s find what works for YOU!! Thanks for the comment! Get after it! Best, Coach A. 🏌️♂️⛳️🙏🏻
