      @@manu-nz7vc how do we calculate value? MLS teams are technically worth a pretty high amount, even if the teams don’t have super high value squads or large fan engagement. The newest expansion sides have to pay more than $325 million, and since the league owns all of the clubs that puts the lowest valued club in MLS around that mark. That’s not too far away from Ajax, which was last valued at $413 million.
      Edit: not sure how credible the source is but I did find one website that listed the cheapest MLS team at $370 million and the most valuable at $860 million. These calculations were made as of February 2022.

    Serie A was the top league back then so not surprising that it had more teams on the list back then and the riches of the EPL had really yet to kick in at the time it's all changed now of course with the EPL being a financial behemoth with mega TV deals and attracting the best managers and players while Italian football teams struggle to compete financially and are no longer genuine contenders for the champions league.

    It was genuinely exciting to be a football fan back then and the Man Utd and Arsenal rivalry was far more intense than anything i remember with either Liverpool or Man City maybe because at the time they were both the 2 best teams in the PL and spent several seasons fighting it out for the league title and you had the Ferguson and Wenger and Keane and Viera clashes on top of it while the rise of Liverpool and Man City largely coincided with the decline of Man United as a force in the league so rarely have competed for the title in the same season.

    • @UncledadBFD
      @UncledadBFD 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think the Keane and Viera thing is definitely more prominent in retrospect. The hyperbole surrounding the Premier League has steadily increased and now it’s just ridiculous, even in terms of the delivery of historical coverage. Totally agree about the intensity of the battle but it was definitely ultimately an 11 v 11 thing on the pitch and not based around the managers or individual players

    I don't know exactly how to word this but a video on teams who have had particular fortune with players of a certain nationality or have tended to favour players from a particular country either all time or in a particular era. I was thinking like Liverpool or Leeds with Scottish players, particularly in the 60s and 70s for leeds. Or AC Milan having surprising success with Swedish players or their dutch trio in the 80s. Or more recently with Arsenal favouring french players or wolves with portuguese or shaktar with brazilians.

    Not a surprise for me that Newcastle were 5th in these rankings in 1998, given I _am_ old enough to remember that era. As to not doing much in Europe... perhaps not that season, but Newcastle were real threats to anyone in that era and did progress to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 2002-03. Still, they didn't actually win it, nor any domestic trophy in that time, so your point is still valid.

    Hey Alfie, could you do a video on the turbulent recent history of Goztepe in the Super Lig? They’re one of the Super Lig’s most well supported clubs (a bit like a Newcastle United, Sunderland or Strasbourg if you may). In the 2001/02 season, they finished seventh in the top flight, however from 2002 to 2008, they were relegated five times in six seasons, due to their inability to reduce their outstanding debt which resulted in the football club being banned from signing new players during that time. In August of 2007, a business based in Istanbul, vowed to take them back to the top flight making them one of the top five clubs in the country, but they were met with lots of suspicions from the fan base, and then they handed over the ownership to another bloke called Mehmet Sepil in 2014. Anyway, they’re back in the Super Lig as a solid mid table/weaker top half team. Why am I bringing all this up? Because apparently Abramovich is looking to possibly buy the club himself, after being sanctioned from the UK. It’s a crazy crazy story and may you could look into this, not to mention, they are not only a rare example of a club that is considered a neighbourhood club, as well as the fact that they’ve played in 3 different stadiums since 2011, but also in 1969, they became the first Turkish football team to play a semi-final of a European competition.

    It is SO gratifying to hear Chelsea were also Financially solid before Roman Abramovich - I'm not a Chelsea fan, but I do defend their takeover when compared to Man City since they had won a trophy and been half decent in the decade prior to it happening - knowing the finances were good too adds another point to my argument.
    That being why I despise Man City - for context.
