To me, Veron's signing was the first time that I realized an amazing player joining an amazing team won't always work. At the end of the day, it was hard to break the Scholes/Keane partnership, but what a baller Veron was ⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽

I really like Bebe's story, not because he was a "nobody" when United signed him but because he was in one of the worst possible situations a child can find themselves in. To make it from an orphanage to being a regular at a professional football club is insane and I hope the kids in these institutions look up to him.

Just to add a bit to Veron's quality:
When older he went back to his childhood club Estudiantes in Argentina but he was still so good and relevant he helped them win a Copa Libertadores and even had a great match in the Club World Cup against peak Barcelona in 2009 when he was 34. He then served as president of the club for 6 years I think, including the recent pandemic.
Estudiantes has had success in the past but is historically a mid table club, so Veron making then win a Libertadores is like Beckham going to a club like Everton at 32 and making them reach a Champions League Final

I was at bebe debut (if I remember correctly) against wolves we won 2/1 Park last double, last minute winner, Hargreaves came back from injury then got injured again, anyway bebe came on, over hit every single cross and pass, then got taken off around 30 minutes after.

    • @razerow3391

Yep. I am a Wolves fan. 2010. We had equalised with Ebanks Blake. Park scored in questionable 93rd min. More Fergie time. And I remember United fans had turned on Fergie. It's what makes me laugh. My one memory of the great manager and only experience is seeing United fans chanting "you arent the real man united" or something.
Bebe wasn't great... He was easily stopped. I mean Stearman block his shots and passes and grew into the game and ended up scoring.... So... In fact Bebe was a sub that ended up being subbed, making it onto that exclusive list... SOOO.... Scholes and Macheda were brought on.

It was far from his debut. He had already played 2 league cup matches against Scunthorpe and Wolves (where he scored), a champions league match against Bursaspor (where he scored) and a league match against Sunderland by the time of the Wolves league game. And he was actually on the pitch for over 60mins, he obviously wasn't supposed to come on so early and wasn't really fit enough to do more than 60mins so while a lot was made of it I suspect it was less to do with his performance and more to do with by that point he was running out of steam.
Also personally I don't think he was as bad as people like trying to make out, he was raw having had very little formal training plus he was playing with players that he largely couldn't communicate with and it saw him have issues but its almost like every mistake he made has been edited in peoples minds as happing in a single game and the flashes of the raw talent he had such as the goals ignored

Still hoping for a "What on Earth is Going on at Sunderland?
Sunderland til I die showed our relegation to league one and failed attempt to get promoted back to the Championship, but a detailed look at the Premier League years before our relegation would be great, also looking at how things went after STID. The amount of bad luck and awful decisions and from board level down to the pitch is staggering. In the Ellis Short era, and then the Stewart Donald era.
-England losing against Iceland essentially resulting in us losing Allardyce, a great manager for us at the time, only for him to be sacked by England after 1 game.
-At one point having the 6th highest wage bill in the Premier League with nothing really to show for it.
-The purchase of Ricky Alvarez, not playing him, trying to back out of signing him, losing a lawsuit to Inter Milan and still suffering financial implications to this day.
-Signing the appalling Jack Rodwell and being financially crippled for years again
-Signing a completely past it Emmanuel Eboue who was then released 3 weeks later as he was banned from football for unpaid agent debts
-Playing Adam Johnson when the execs knew he was under investigation for sexual activity with a child.
-Well known drinking culture among players, general poor professionalism.
-Darron Gibson getting arrested for drink driving after a car crash. Gibson also filmed on social media off his tits bad mouthing the team and manager whilst still a player.
-Letting our top scorer leave in January in our Championship relegation season
-Selling our top scorer in January in our first League 1 promotion push
-Replacing him with Will Grigg for 3 million quid on a league 1 budget because our owner at the time wanted to be a big shot. Grigg was a failure since and never even wanted to come.
-Losing twice at Wembley in League 1 including in the playoff final in the 95th minute.
-Missing out on the playoffs after the season was cancelled due to COVID
-Losing again in the playoffs last season
-Losing last season's top scorer with 30 goals (Wyke) and our Captain (Power) to Wigan for free in the summer.
We've made a solid start to this season and made some decent signings under our new owner, but the whole story of the last 10 years is an absolute car crash worth a deep dive.

Problem with advanced flair players like Veron and countryman Juan Roman Riquelme is that they are amazing with the ball at their feet. When the rest of the team is good enough to bypass the player by making chances of their own, they become essentially ineffective.
This is usually something the deep lying playmaker types like Xavi and Pirlo do better at, because they have far more room and time to pick a pass.

I have to disagree with you on your assesment of Veron. IMO his time at United is misunderstood by people who did not watch those seasons closely. His first season was a mixed bag - Our biggest issue that year, however, was selling Stam so Verons form coincided with the team just not being solid enough. His second season however, not only in the UCL in which he was (along with RVN) genuinely United's best player, he really picked up form in the Prem. He ran the show vs Arsenal and Chelsea and was really picking up to the pace of the Prem around xmas that year. If I remember correctly he got injured vs Leeds and although Ferguson put him back in the team over Beckham vs Real Madrid in the QTR final - he never regained his fitness nor his place in the team. In any case, if you watch the games he played I really don't see how he can be considered bad. Did he live up to his massive expectation? No, maybe not. But I still would not consider him a terrible signing and without his contribution to United in the 03 season I really think they would not have won the title. Injury and circumstance shortened his career at United. I think it was a mistake selling him to Chelsea.

I don't think it's accurate to say Utd we're not big spenders prior to 2000. Their 1990 FA Cup winning squad was the most expensively assembled squad in history at the time. They regularly broke transfer records with likes of Hughes and Ince and Keane and Cole etc. Money wasn't the problem for Utd prior to '93.

In defence of Kleberson for the discussion at least. £6.5mil (£10.5 in todays money) for a World Cup winner - who started in the final - isn't too bad. Plus they got near 50% of their fee back after 2 years so all in all not too bad a punt for one of the richest clubs in the world.
