..."or you'll remove the top layer of skin." That's encouraging. lol I'm learning how to shave with disposable razors again. I've been using shave oil combined with shaving cream. I'm still battling ingrown hairs, as I have curly hair in my beard. Is it recommended to shave only with the grain until my face gets use to it? I'm currently doing 3 passes: with, against and across the grain.
Honestly, it is WAY easier to cut yourself or irritate your skin with a disposable razor. When he says you will remove the top layer of your skin, its not what you think it means. Razor burn is caused primarily from the razor blade putting too much friction on the skin and scraping off the thin epidermal layer of skin.
I ran across this video and thought I'd give you some advice. I had BAAAD razor bumps years ago due to shaving incorrectly and with disposable blades. Until you "train" your beard, shave downward once with the grain, and then once across the grain and you will see a great improvement with your face. I normally shave every other day. I use Proraso Green, a Badger brush, and Personna blades. I shave one time downward over my entire face, once upward, and then a "clean up" pass across the grain to get any hairs I might have missed. You should never and I repeat NEVER shave with Mach 3's, or any razor with 4 or 5 blades! Each blade cuts the hair closer and closer. So if you do 2 passes with a Mach 3, it's like shaving your face 6 times. Sure it feels nice and smooth but the hairs are shaved beneath your skin. And if you have curly hair, that's a recipe for razor bumps like you've never seen! Doing 2 passes with a DE razor, the hairs are cut extremely close but not beneath your skin. The hairs don't have a chance to grow back into your face and you minimize your chances of getting razor bumps. Hope this helped my brother.
I'm a newbie to safety razors. I just got one in the mail and tried to use it but I'm not sure the blade is quite reaching my face. I couldn't get a shave going.
When I was younger tried the DE, failed miserably. It was haunting. I find the cut throat much easier after using it for the last 10 years. PS: I am still young.

Well he only did one pass with the grain. You can do 3 if you want a really close shave. Wtg, across the grain, and against the grain. Never got ingrown hairs from that.
Fairly simple. Just spent another $60 on razor heads for my 5 blade and first time with a fresh blade and I have all of these other steps covered already and still get razor burn... 5 blades is cutting to much away and getting my skin. Going to give a 1 blade a try like this means investing but I have a feeling that this will reduce the risk of cuts. Just have to master the manual movement more.
@@kylegusek I've made the switch. Using a Edwin Jagger DE89 now with Astra SP blades. Much much better shave, smooth, easy and not a single cut or bump. Just picked up a fairly cheap boar brush and stainless steel bowl and I use Prorosa soap/cream and find they do the job for a fairly cheap price. They are far from the best but beat out all your supermarket stuff by a mile. I actually enjoy shaving now, where as before with disposable razors, even the so called best of the best just didn't cut it or in fact did... but me... lol. Also once you get your set up and find products you like the overall cost becomes almost nothing. 100 pack of blades for $15 and soap that you can find online for $10 and that will last you a while. Ends up being about 80% cheaper at least for me. Sorry to babble on but it changed my life so now I want to help others.
okay, i just made the switch. I've shaved twice now with my safety razor. the shave is close, but I'm butchering my face. cutting it up like mad. what am I doing wrong? wrong angle?
Not sure if this is too late of a response but there's a few things that could help with cuts. first, make sure you use a pre-shave oil or a slick tube shaving cream as a base. Safety razors require a lot of lubricant to glide effortlessly. this is why traditional shaving creams applied with a brush are popular; they have a high fat content and provide a slick medium to run a razors over. if you don't want to go through the trouble of a brush and shave soap, then apply a layer of tube shaving cream followed by whatever you normally use. don't apply any pressure to your razor. Use a sharp blade, make sure it sits in the razor straight with the same blade exposure on both sides, and shave with the grain of your beard using short strokes. Rinse your face off, reapply your creams and shave perpendicular to your hair growth. for me this is from the ears towards the nose on both sides. rinse, reapply creams and shave against the grain if you want a super close shave. Avoid going against the grain on your neck if you're prone to irritation there. end with a rinse, alum block, and an aftershave without alcohol. you're good. keep it up.
@@Dwaynerade Thanks for the response. It's been almost a year now and I've really gotten the hang of it. It was just beginner's growing pains haha. I was using Williams shave soap for a long time but it started to irritate my skin so I switched to modern shave gel and have found that it works better with my face, surprisingly. I've gotten that angle figured out and barely get any cuts at all anymore. Usually just a knick or two, which one little poke with a steptic pen and they're taken care of.
I just tried to shaved with the safety razor, but I ended up looking like Deadpool without the mask during the process of his transformation into mutant💀.
I made a rookie mistake. I shaved with it and it’s good but I didn’t use the MUHLE razor which is what caused me to get a cut. And my shaving cream dries very fast. I’ll need an Alum Block.
Its not the razor, but the blades. You probably used the blades that the razor came with, they are usually low quality blades. Use a feather blade, they are the sharpest blades on the market. They will effortlessly glide through the toughest of facial hair.
you didn’t point out that the blade height on a safety razor such as the one in the vid is adjustable. Learning optimum blade height is important as well.
So thats why my face is always red after shaving, i was shaving my skin off! I wasn't shaving because of that (i was using an electrical machine) but now i may give it a go
I tried using a safety razor for a while and thought it was pretty cool because I really like old fashioned things, but it just doesn’t do as good a job. I like a very close, clean, shave, to get that with one of these you have to go back over the skin multiple times. With a cartridge razor with multiple blades the job is much faster and cleaner.
Do I really have to do similar shit shaving my head? That's an awful lot of back and forth. Are double edged safety razors less likely to slice the shit out of you? I tried a straight cut last night and sliced my head open about a dozen times before giving up.
Like you, I was also wondering whether shaving one's noggin with this tackle was less likely to result in a smooth head than a visit to A&E. Still a bit hesitant.
This seems pretty time consuming. I’m usually in a rush in the morning, and the time required to shave properly exceeds the time I have to shave. Maybe I’ll switch to double edge razors when I’m retired and don’t have to be anywhere.
i personally just shave with water and the double edge razor. it works just as good. i shave in the shower or just wet my face quickly and shave. but at the same time i never go against the grain, i only shave with the grain because a super close shave isn't that important to me. i just have really thick coarse beard hair and cartridge razors struggle to cut it in one pass, while the DE does it first try.
Honeslty do whats best for you, if you must shave a lot then I recommend using whichever is easier for you. If you don’t have the time to be good with the safety razor save yourself the pain and go with the other types of razors
I’m 18 yo and I used it for my first ever shave. Very smooth and very comfortable. I didn’t feel the blade. I also didn’t get no bumps, cuts, burns, or anything. You must be going too fast or you’re using the wrong lather / setup.
The key with a safety razor is not pressing against the skin like you do with a cartridge razor since a safety razor is heavier you let the weight of the razor do the work
So I hate when people tell me to hold something at a certain angle. That’s just dumb as fuck. Like what am I supposed to get out my protractor? I don’t know how to eyeball 30 degrees! JUST FUCKING SHOW ME HOW THE BLADE SHOULD BE RESTING AGAINST MY FACE!
This is so wrongly done. Its amazing his face isnt all dug up and bleeding. You could see the razor tugging. I imagine the razor rash was pretty harsh afterwords lol
@@riner9 what's with the cuss words, was i rude to you in the discourse? You must have a neckline like a double pepperoni pizza.
My recommendation while making lather is that use lotion, Keri or any other its best so that
shouldn't you pat the aftershave balm in instead of massaging it in?
Normal disposable razors are much more expensive to use and don’t seem to give as good of a shave
I wish I would have watched this before trying my safety razor. I was pulling off skin like it was ice cream out of a container
okay, i just made the switch.
@@rickyiglesias5384 Awesome! Good to hear. I'm glad you've figured out a technique that works. Keep it up!
jawlines did not align with the video now im bleeding !!

Liking simply because of tradition
I just tried to shaved with the safety razor, but I ended up looking like Deadpool without the mask during the process of his transformation into mutant💀.
Wish I didn't have a more noticeable adams apple... It's much more of a pain to shave that area with a DE...
My dad have one but it not have safety part how do I use it?
I double edged to this. Bravo 🔥
I tried it for the first time today and it keeps grabing the hairs instead of just cutting through them, not sure if it makes sense :(
How many times can i use the same blade ?
I made a rookie mistake. I shaved with it and it’s good but I didn’t use the MUHLE razor which is what caused me to get a cut. And my shaving cream dries very fast. I’ll need an Alum Block.
Wow sir this tutorial is best you covered all the basics and advanced things in shaving .
Why he is ho happy ?
He didn't slice his head off.
he grins and bears it
Dmitry Volkov he had fun shaving and did a good job u must live a stale life my dude
Because he’s beautiful
Because he’s an actor and they told him to smile
But does his card have a watermark ?
I just got a DE razor to try but the tug and pull was horrible, any tips?
Its not the razor, but the blades. You probably used the blades that the razor came with, they are usually low quality blades. Use a feather blade, they are the sharpest blades on the market. They will effortlessly glide through the toughest of facial hair.
Any acceptable alternative to a shaving-specific brush like that?
I was gifted a safety razor and classic shave cream, but not a brush.
A towel or your fingers will work, but definitely invest in a brush.
Derby black $10 / 200 blades smooth the same price as the green Blades?. Wheelchair Larry Happy New Year
The guy shown in the video is quite a charmer
I love the straight to the point information and the jokes 😊
I always have problems shaving under chin and neck area. Never a shave without cut
What is 30°?
Thanks for the concise video. Short and to the point.
you didn’t point out that the blade height on a safety razor such as the one in the vid is adjustable. Learning optimum blade height is important as well.
My safety razor gives me as every bit as good a shave, if not better, than any of those multi-blade razors on the market.
It’s not about how many blades it’s about how sharp the blade is using multiple blades on your face is really bad for your skin
take a second pass on the mustache...
I also shave my head. Are these suitable for this too?
Good-looking American..Simple way to shave
wtf is that lather
First time inserting blade i forgot where my fingers was, and just as it hoped it wasn't, it was. Now I got a cut in me finger :(
Do I really have to do similar shit shaving my head?
Well i'm glad they used an "Everyday Joe" as the guy to shave here and not some fucking model..
2 studies have found no difference in razor bump production between cartridge and safety razors
Both probably sponsored by Gillette.
But the question is what's cheaper?
To anyone that purchased this razor, is it worth it or should i just stick to my Gillette?
The last time I used a safety razor I cut myself 11 times. Nervous about trying again, though environmentally it makes more sense. A great video.
The key with a safety razor is not pressing against the skin like you do with a cartridge razor since a safety razor is heavier you let the weight of the razor do the work
excellent shaving method.
I always cut with these razors unless my skin is super hot. Cheers
More water with the lather please. It's looks superdry.
I just shave upwards on my neck and down on my face is that ok ?
So I hate when people tell me to hold something at a certain angle. That’s just dumb as fuck. Like what am I supposed to get out my protractor? I don’t know how to eyeball 30 degrees! JUST FUCKING SHOW ME HOW THE BLADE SHOULD BE RESTING AGAINST MY FACE!
💀
This guy has a nice smile 😁
1:21 most pathetic lather ever.
man, i wished i watched this first before shaving with a saftey razor. my face is a little bloody, and it hurts :(
The styptic pencil is your friend.
Urgent: I cut my entire face off, what kind of lotion should I use to fix
A small dab of Neosporin should do the trick.
LMAO
This is so wrongly done. Its amazing his face isnt all dug up and bleeding. You could see the razor tugging. I imagine the razor rash was pretty harsh afterwords lol
how sad is your life that you become a shaving snob
@@BUZRBF I've been shaving upwards for 20 years idiot and never had a problem with ingrown hairs.
@@riner9 what's with the cuss words, was i rude to you in the discourse? You must have a neckline like a double pepperoni pizza. Ask any established barber of repute: there are 6 directional sections on the neckline alone, 6 on the cheeks and chin, 2 on the lip. Everyone's grain is different, but there are generic patterns that might be applicable to an individual. Just because you do it one way, doesn't make it gospel. Stupid twat.
@@BUZRBF plenty of people's grain grows upwards on their necks. Many people shave up and many shave down. Your opinions are not facts
not a fan of the balm or the cream
Going to be honest with you. I'm here because my face and chin is cut to ribbons after the first shave of a new blade and I need to get used to not doing this :)
I keep fucking up my sideburns so appreciate the tutorial
They'll call me Scar Face after this!
I like how he only did 1 pass. :/ *sarcasm*
Great guide thanks!
Glad you found it useful :)
"hold at 30 degrees"
*immediately shows someone holding it at 60 degrees*
Very wise choice instead of nasty multiblade razors
it looked painful based on his facial expressions
He didn't know whether to smile or not
this is bunk. You need at least 2, preferably 3 passes with a safety - with the grain, across the grain and against the grain. Because you can. With a multi blade cartridge, this would cut you up but its the done thing with a safety. Also, that lather was terrible.
Not sure what all the dislikes are about. I learn't everything i wanted to know in a short video.
his mo wasnt even shaved properly
Wow he’s so good looking
what tha heck? this must be the worst shaving soap i´ve ever seen! no lathering.
Was really helpful
