I switched to my great grandfathers straight razor about 10 years ago and I’ve never looked back, I love the history of it and the shave is second to none!
How do you sharpen?
First shaved in my teens with dad’s adjustable safety razor…. Disposables came out a couple yrs. later and I switched. Now at 71 I just went back to a safety razor with feather blades …. What a dumbass I’ve been for over 40 yrs. What a great shave . Make the switch or start new , you won’t be sorry!
@Dennis St.Pierre Even if the safety razor is initially an expensive investment (I have a full beard and I use one for my neckline; very efficient too!), in the long run, it's still cheaper since double-edge blades are MUCH cheaper than the garbage that passes for cartridges. Besides, one blade is all you need, anyway.

Feather are nice. There is a Swiss company that make a more flexed blade. Feather seemed a little stiff to me. Can't recall the name of the Swiss brand i like though.
Safety razors to me seem incredibly cheap. For what about six cartridge razors cost I picked up a real nice fat boy. Six cartridge razors would have lasted me less than a month, the fat boy was built in 1960 so is now been providing shaves for over 60 years. Basically after the first month I now shave for less than $1 per month for my razor and blades.

Single blade razors are the best decision I've ever made... I prefer the straight razor than a safety razor, but both are classics.
The cons of straight razor is that it take longer to cut beard. Not suitable for person who rush to go at work.
@@uncouthnphilandererman1318 really shouldn't be rushing with either. Using a DE safety razor is also meant for an enjoyable shaving experience. But definitely more expensive to get a quality straight razor.
Either my blade isn't sharp or I am incapable of learning how to shave with my left hand. I strop before every shave and my face ends up red with no hair coming off. Been shaving for a year now, it's just absurd.
@@misterperson7070 i had the same issues. I bought some strop wax and applied some on my strop and sharpened my straight razor with the strop applied with wax and after a couple minutes of stropping it was plenty sharp enough for a easy and irritation free shave
@@josephjefferies1949 Hmm, still might not solve my left hand problem. Even with a dull blade I can remove some hair on the right side but left is just the same as before.
So true. I realized this a long time ago, when I realized that I had less iritation after shaving with a knife (just to see if it would). I tried it with a few other super sharp blades and confirmed over time, single blades are less irritating I like how an open blade like a strait is so easy to clean. It probably helps that I have been sharpening and using strops for decades for woodcarving and shop stuff. safety razors may clog less than multi blades, but with an open blade a dip/ rinse, wipe or even a flick of the wrist if youre outdoors, will clear off the whole blade in one second. I tried all the multi blades, I prefer a straight or safety razor.

Recently made the switch to safety and straight razors. Initially just wanted to see what they are like. After the first shave I seen the difference and tossed my cartridge disposable types.
Prefer safety or straight razor? I can’t see any benefit to using a straight razor over a safety one other than the old-school cool factor.
100 pack of blades for safety razor is like 8 bucks, so more like 30 bucks a year for blades way way WAY cheaper than cartridge razors. My grandfather taught me how to shave with a safety razor and i've never even tried a multi blade, just saw no need for it.
Yep, and even then that’s if you shave almost everyday, and change the blade every shave. Which most people don’t do

IMHO plastic disposables are useful. When travelling, especially by plane you can just put one in backpack. Or buy at random local shop, whatever.
Otherwise I see this product as purely made by marketing and have no sense at all.
I switched a LONG time ago lol. I started with cartridge razors once I started shaving as they were super common..but I eventually decided to try my great grandpa's old adjustable Gillette slim safety razor that my grandpa kept. It took a hot minute to get used to it...but that's only because of the settings on it for how close I want the shave! See as a kid I learned how to shave from my grandpa with a toy razor set...don't know if you can find them anymore but it came with actual shaving cream and aftershave..and a plastic toy safety razor. It was like riding a bike for me to get the motions down again on that razor. I've since switched to a shavette straight razor for keeping my beard lined up as it has more control for me, though I will use the old safety razor once in awhile just to remember how to do it...I'm thinking of buying a new one as the old Gillette is well...old and I don't want to break it as it used to belong to my great grandpa on my mom's side of the family.
I heard once that because it's metal you can actually renovate old safety razor. Never done it but I thought you may find this idea useful.
@@meandmylittlemind Problem with trying to renovate the one I mentioned is that it's got plastic on the handle and it's one of those twist to open "butterfly" style safety razors. There's also the adjustable nature of it as moving the collar with a setting of 1-9 printed on it adjust how much the blade is bent for a closer or less close shave. I think something like that is pretty much beyond me if it's even possible.
For 70$ DE blades they better be able to fly around my face and shave by themselves most blades can be bought in bulk of 100 for dirt cheap if you want the sharpest blades (feather) you'll be looking at a little more but even then those blades last and they do an amazing job
70$ for 100 blades are mad crazy. I just bought some Voskhod blades (100) for 6€ and even the Feathers are "only" at 30€ compared to 70$
I fell in love with Perma Sharp. They are dirt cheap (100pcs for around 8€) and they are awesome.
I was shocked by that as well. I hope that people don't see this and avoid safety razors because of his quoted price. Astra blades are on Amazon for about $10.00 per 100 pack.

Straight razors have virtually zero maintenance cost . But I am a bit intimidated by it so I would go with a safety razor.

@@saunak9183 I know how you feel about the straight razor vs. safety razor. I use the latter for my neckline under my full beard. On the other hand, if forced to choose between a straight razor or cartridge razor, I would GLADLY learn to use the straight razor (I mean stropping and honing it and all that) before I EVER waste another dime on OVERPRICED, plasticy GARBAGE (face it, those extra blades give razor burn like nobody's business and who wants that?!) that snake-oil shaving companies are peddling to people who can't seem to think for themselves!

Update: I just tried the safety razor and it works exactly like my usual cartridge razors.
This is all new to me so I'm gonna try out this safety razor. I tried the straight razor and it worked out. I never knew cartridge razors can lead to possible ingrown hairs. If the safety razor does help save money, I'm willing to try

I shave exclusively with a straight razor - all in my rotation are antique (more than 100 years old) which I have restored and honed. They all have another 100 years of use in them. 8 razors, 100 years more use - if that was translated to a cartridge razor system, at £20 a month (that is cheap...) you are looking at £192,000 for the equivalent amount of shaves 😆

You need the strops to sharpen, no replacement?
@@karthikelf Stropping maintains the honed blade, stropping on it's own will not sharpen a blunt edge
$70 for 100 DE blades? Is that what this video is all about? Ripping people off another way? Most DE blades can be found for between $10-$20 for 100. Stay away from Dovo if you're new to this, they are just another Gillette!

You can buy a 100 shark double edge razor blades for 6 dollars on Amazon and free shipping to I have tried them in a sampler there crazy sharp there's also other brands for the same price or pay 9 and get a giant sampler with a 100 blades about 10 different brands
I bought a 100 DE blades for 10 to 20 USD as well.
I bought my DE razor and blades for £8 and I've still not even gotten halfway through the blades got about 70 left and it's been almost a year

My safety razor was less than $20. A box of 50 Wilkinson Blades cost me $10 online. I don't shave every day, and one blade usually lasts a couple of weeks for me ( I know everybody is different). I literally have not bought any other shaving equipment in a year and a half. And I will not need to anytime soon because safety razors last forever if you clean and take care of them.
.... Every man must start using safety razors again! You will save tons of money and get a much closer/smoother shave. And you will feel like a MAN when you use an old-fashioned style safety razor.

@@brantleytinnin6258 well i guess it's mostly about learing the thechnique if you can do your neck well, i think it will be easier for me since i dont have sharp angles on my face and my hair is pretty thin. I'm gonna try my (unfortunatly dead, god bless him) grandpa's safety razor if my grandma know where it is and let me try it.

Yup, I started a year ago. I’m up to just over 100 razors between my DE, SE and straight razors. 🤣 The rabbit hole is real.
Them Mach 3s cost 25$+ tax in Canada. I often wondered exactly how much money was spent promoting them when they first came out. Switching to a safety razor was the single best decision I ever made.
I use the Chieftain Jr razor which is mild plus the Gillette Platinum. I only need 2 passes . 1 with the growth, the other across the growth and I am fine. Smooth , comfortable and close. Pack of 50 blades are cheap. I use 1 blade for 3 shaves .
To be fair. Cartridge razors require pretty much no practice, while a safety razor does take a minute to learn, making the cartridge razors seem like the better choice for a kid who doesn’t know any better. You would think the cost would sway kids to the cheaper option, but the first razors are usually a gift, or simply purchased by a parent anyways, and by the time your on your own, you just aren’t thinking about it. That’s where I found myself using cartridge razors for the first decade of my shaving life. Then I discovered straight razors. It was WAY out of my league, but learned about safety razors shortly after, and haven’t looked back since.
I switched mostly for economics. A side effect of it is that I love having different scents of soap and aftershave now.

I started on my dad's safety razor about 57 years ago. Soon moved to a double blade razor for many years and finally a March 3 about 10 years ago (when I couldn't find the double blades any longer). Thinking about going back to the safety razor.
I’ve been using a multi blade cartridge razor ever since I started shaving. Nice close shave with no problems whatsoever. The only advantage of single blade razors is cost.
It really is wayyyyy cheaper to shave this way. My lifetime supply of blades cost me around 100$

I turned it into a hobby and ended up spending the same if not more. It's all good though because I shave 4-6 times a week, and I love rotating my 4 DOVO's with my 2 Boker straight razors. I have 4 Proraso creams and pre-shave conditioners along with ARKO sticks and Tabac soap. I own several safety razors too. A few Merkur, open and closed comb, as well as the Muhle R41 'Beast' and R89 closed. I use those mostly with I'm in a hurry and use them to finish against the grain after a straight razor. The straw that broke the Camel's back for me was me I was tapping an expensive 5 blade in the sink and it snapped, and I literally threw several bucks in the trash. Plus, wet shaving / straight razor / safety razor shaves make shaving fun.
I have both and alternate. I left cartridge razors 3 years go and have never had razor burn or ingrown hairsnever since

Girlfriend bought me a 5 star rated straight razor and strop. I have watched lots of videos on how to strop correctly yet I can't get it sharp enough to use. Where am I going wrong. Any tips or advice.

What kind of razor is it? If its a cheaper style with low quality steel, good luck ever really getting it 'shave ready'. All my straight razors are from Solingen Germany and shave beautifully! Hone them and keep em stropped after each shave and your grandchildren can use the same razor! Itll literally last a lifetime!
I know it's a really late answer and I hope you have found one already. If not, not every straight razor comes sharpened and ready to use. Stroping is not sharping, it's just maintaing the edge that has been set by sharping - which is done using whetstones. You might want to send your razor to be sharpened. Checked the web, chances are you will find someone in your area. By the way, stroping is done before each shave. Honing (sharpening) needs to be done every 50 shaves or so. By correctly correctly maintaining the razor using a clean after a shave to properly dry the edge, cloth strop with some paste now and then before moving to a smooth leather strop before every shave, you can double it to up to 100 shaves before the blade needs to be sharpened (honed) again.
Your straight razor needs a new bevel edge which can easily be achieved honing with a 1000 grit synthetic wet stone followed by a higher grit finishing stone (or two). Stick with it and your girlfriend will thank you. A S.R. is the gift of a lifetime! Cheers (Shavetown PDX ❤️)

I am a black man. I say that because our hair grows very curly. I used modern multi razors all of my youth and sufferd extreme "razor bumps" i.e. ingrown hairs. I switched to saftey and straight razors and have had ZERO bumps since. Good advive you have presented.

@@David-u2b5p My SR gives a closer shave than my DE. My SR, obviously, demands good technique more than my SR. If I'm in a bit of a hurry to get ready, I'll opt for my DE. I prefer my SR because I enjoy taking my time with the ritual of shaving. It's not a chore to me, it's a personal pleasure, like going to the spa.
@@ronizulufineartworks Thats good bro. I have the same issue like you, in your first post - ingrown hair. I have a DE = Merkur Futur but I still get ingrown hair. I am thinking its because the blades are so sharp that when I shave the hair just goes under the skin. The SR *not a shavette) are not as sharp as a DE with blades, bcs the blade on the SR are thicker. I am planning to pick up a SR because 1. The blades is not as sharp and 2. I believe it will cut the hair just above the skin without the hair going under the skin. Do you use a real SR or a SR shavette ? Do you get less ingrown hair with a SR ?

Edit okay so the saftey razor blades mentioned in this video are a rip-off unless they're made of gold or silver.
Most brands charge about $10 for a 100 blades while some charge $30+ for 100 blades like Feather.
Switched to saftey razors and haven't looked back. I stopped using Gillette years ago. $25 for four blades that last three or four shaves each NOPE. I was using and still do use a Panasonic Arc4 that's really good. I get zero irritation and a very close shave that takes no time at all to accomplish. BUT there's just something really satisfying about using a safety razor lol. After my Dad saw me using a safety razor when he came over to visit he gave me all his old Gillette saftey razors from when he was younger. So I have a Fatboy and another butterfly razor with a black handle. This is addition to the four Parkers I own lol. Using a safety razor saves you money in blades only. If you have a collective personality single blade shaving is something else that'll take money from you 🤣 BUT I get enjoyment from using saftey razors anyways so whatever. I spend money in different accessories now instead of cartridge blades all the time.

I think most people are thinking $70.00 for blades is ridiculous which I totally agree with but you can get a 100 pack of blades for under $10.00

I've used a parker shavette for the past 8 years. I buy the inexpensive derby blades and strop them before each shave. I get around 10 shaves per blade this way.
I use the safety razor. Love it!! Tried the cut throat, but it kept living up to the name, while the learning curve of the safety razor is paper thin, and almost as good. Either way, anyone using a cartridge is getting robbed of a wonderful experience, as well as a boat 🛥️ load of money.

The "5-fold blades shave more thoroughly!" line is so amusing to me, since they started out with two blades and worked their way up to five. This leaves us with a question we have to ask razor companies, "When will you reach the optimum number of blades necessary for a good shave? Shall we not just go straight to that number then?"
Switched to DE years ago and it was the best thing ever.
After years in the army then fire service where I have to shave every day it’s awesome.
Zero irritation and a waaay better result plus it’s also plenty manly.
Also have saved a fortune in razor blades. 100 feather razors is close to the same price as a Gillette refil pack. It’s a massive corporate lie that we never needed.
I’ve recently moved to a safety razor after using my cartridge for many years. I saw the cost factor and knew immediately i had to switch. I was always able to get a baby smooth finish on my face and head with my cartridge. Maybe my skin was able to tolerate the cartridge? Never had and razor burn, nor ingrown hairs.
I bought a 100 count sleeve of Feather blades in 2017, and still have around 10 left. In that time I got a multi-vendor sample pack, and I bought an electric for when I’m pressed for time. But I get four to six shaves per Feather blade, and I only shave twice a week.
When doing cartridges, I was going through one every week or two. Even at SAMS Club, getting twenty-five or so at a time for $40.00 ish, that’s $80.00 per year times seven is $560.00
DE wet shave is a no brainer. The money I save goes to better soaps; which out last a can of foamy air nearly 3-to-1. Nicer brushes, other razors which I can pass down to my grandson.
Instead of, “Wow thanks Papaw!” with a DE, he’d laugh in my face if I tried to pass on a razor that takes a battery to vibrate to give the illusion of a good shave.

You are correct, sir! Single blade wet shaving is extremely enjoyable! I'm 72 years old and have been shavng with double edge safety razors, single edge injector razors, vintage single edge safety razors, standard straight razors and shavette straight razors for several years. I love them all! Dude... you'd have much stronger credibility if you were clean shaven. Lose the beard and join the wet shaving crowd, yourself. Good video!

Probably not. He's just shilling for dovo. 70$ for a 100 pack is ridiculous. Should cost 5-10. Also he doesn't understand (or is lying about) how razors work. Saftey razor blades do touch your skin, and multi bladed razors aren't more likely to cause ingrown hairs than other equally close shaves

Great video help me alott, my skin is supper dry and easly iretated, used several multi blade razors and diffeent machines with alott of issues..
In my opinion the design of a straight razor needs practice before trying it on someone but to practice your going to need to do it yourself which comes with errors and self inflicted cuts … I highly recommend for beginners to try touch up razors for men…I myself as a barber has literally switched to a touch up razor completely due to the dislike of the handle part of straight razors sticking out, the men’s touch up razor that’s a quality grade which also has disposable razors just like the typical razors used at barbershop it’s also very lightweight and can be adjusted to shorten it ….when I describe it to other barbers I tell them to just imagine a toothbrush but instead of were the brush part is it’s a razor that uses disposable razors and also can be adjusted to any length you want that has a lock mechanism and oh the razor part can also be adjusted to shorten width

You have a magnificent beard there James. Perhaps tell in a future video what first prompted you to grow, and then go long and what the reaction was from your customers to the look. Bet they want to copy you!
I don't really do clean shaving (trimming at best, let me enjoy my beard since I can't enjoy my hair anymore XD), but if I ever did the cleaner shaving thing, I'd get a straight razor without even thinking about it.

My experience with 5 blade cartridge razors has been wonderful. I've used one for many years now and have never had: ingrown hair, cut or nick, razor burn. I get a much closer shave without making multiple passes. I have watched a lot of shaving videos and it all seems to be about the " shaving experience". I want hair removal. Usually I'm finished shaving (with a closer shave) in less time than these guys take to lather their faces. I do admit that cartridges are more expensive than DE blades but I get at least 7-10 shaves with a cartridge.
7-10 shaves cost $3-4.00 using a stacked 5 blade disposable. The same amount of shaves will cost 0.30$ using D.E. razor blades, it gives less irritation for the majority of users and it's easier on the environment (if anybody even cares about the environment anymore😂)

I move to a safety a couple of years ago and was a great improvement to cartridge ones.

A straight is damn cool but the maintenance is keeping me out. I just start learning to sharp kitchen knifes so I don't think I had any skills to proper sharp something like that. 😅😅😅
It’s just a cool factor, you are more prone to cut yourself, especially on the neck area then with a safety.
A straight shave is better than a DE....once you learn how to shave properly with a straight.
But is it better for everyday rush shave in the morning?
@@jonaspete once you are very proficient at straight ...you can actually shave faster than a DE...at least that's my experience...but it took me at least two years to get proficient.
I have the Dovo Prima, I can’t get a closer shave than using a Safety Razor.
I switched to wet shaving and a vintage single blade razor years ago. Gone were razor burn, sensitive skin and discomfort.
Ive tried everything from straight razors to a $300 Braun and everything in between. Imo nothing tops a single-blade disposable and just using a fresh one every shave.

Hi thanks for this video it's now made alot sence to me now, I start with server psoriasis on my head in my early 40s I tried all medicated shampoo from my Dr but not help so I made a decision to shave my head, I started with a cartridge razor it OK at first but over time I started with bump and my psoriasis got worse so started to use a double edge safety razor and my skin on my head started to heal, so I have been shaving with DE for year and I am wanting to learn to use a shavette now. My skin is healing
What double edge blade is he using that costs 70$ for 100? Most are around or under 10$ for 100

What?!?! And I was waiting for the 37-blade cart with which you stay shaved 37 days until you need it again.
It costed me $33 for 1000blades and I can use it for 4 shaves per blade so 4,000 shaves for $33 and I have way overkill I spent $175 on a Yates precision titanium saftey razor and I'll still save a few thousand dollars in the long run 😊

I've seen it said by straight razor shavers that it's counterintuitively more difficult to use a shavette than it is to use a regular old straight razor.
i can’t tell if i have razor bumps or a in grown hairs all i know is they do get irritated and sometimes itch and they do get painful sometimes
I got my daughter a straight razor because she collects knives. It was a cheap razor and someone took it. Than I found out she loved shaving with it I got her a nice straight razor by Gold dollar she loves it. Me I have a safety razor. I’m trying different blades brands I would switch to a straight razor but I’m a truck driver and most truck stops shower rooms don’t have a place for a strap to hang. Now I get Japanese razor blades cheap because I only use them once and they go to my used blade tin because my safety razor case can’t hold them without damaging them. But it is still 20 cents a shave. But I’m sure going to look into a straight razor for her and other products. Oh and one more thing the straight razor doesn’t put plastic in the landfill and I toss the tin fill of used razors in my companies scrap metal bin so win win.

safety razors are like 24$ on amazon. replacement blades are like 50 for $10. where are you getting those numbers? are the ones im seeing low quality or something?
Just curious, about how long does a safety razor blade lasts....when I use my mach 3 razor it can last about 1.5 weeks?
havent had problems with a safety razor without grill ( feather popular). but i keep cutting myself when using a straight razor. (which i use when i want to shave only some beard an keep a nice line)
One thing I don't get is are the Cartridge blade different from DE blade

Why is a straight razor only good for 300 shaves? You're note going to run out of metal unless you do a full sharpening after every shave right?
it is recommended to always sharpen your razor to keep it as sharp as possible but DOVO razors can and do last more than 300 shaves!
I've tried both safety and straight razors for about 2 years now, and haven't ever gotten anything I'd call a great shave unfortunately. I've tried looking up more tips and videos about how to do it better, and I have obviously practiced for 2 years. I always have issues of so many cuts without pressing against the skin, on lowest settings on the safety razor, and sensitive skin blades, and it still cuts my skin no matter what I try to do. I'd done electric razors before that, and they caused rashes everytime. Does anyone have any recommendations that ain't any of these 3 or a cartridge one either.

If a multi razor cuts your hair so much that it causes ingrown hair, how come its less close than a single blade razor?

You know, I’m 62 and I’m all about tradition. But I shave me head and I’ve tried switching to a closed comb safety razor and I ended up looking like I went 10 rounds with Freddy Krueger. I had to put paper towels on my head and a ski cap over that so I wouldn’t bleed all over my pillow going to bed. I wanted this to work, but I’m going back to an expensive, but SAFE multi-blade razor.

100 blades is like 500 shaves. one blade is good for a week. I've seen 50-100 pack of blades for less than 10 dollars. There is no comparison. Safety/Straight razors are THE only way to go. I switched back in 2019 and just now had to order another 50 pack of blades. My first 100 pack lasted me over 2 years.
How many shaves can a single razor do before having to change it? Using for just clean beard shave.
