    Hi Griffin!
    Always enjoy your content! One thing you might try for the “over/under” test is to shoot a grey card or color card to set exposure, then stop up/down on you lens to get a precise measurement. Then in your software you can bring it up or down to match middle grey and know you’ve balanced it out correctly.
    Also, I’m sure you know this, but in your “overexposure” test for the Red, when you pull down the ISO on the raw footage, you are actually reducing the total range of highlights. Even though Reds don’t have a native ISO, you will still see a reduction in highlight info as you lower the ISO. As in, Low ISO = more shadow info: High ISO = more highlight info (above middle grey).
    Hope that helps!

    Another great comparison. We use both of these cameras for motorsports shoots on the regular and one thing I dislike about the Komodo is the cropped 120p. It's not unusable, but the C70 just destroys it. In fact, if I have to shoot 120p race footage...I reach for the R5 at this point. You might like that opposed to the 1DX. That said, I think these cameras pair up really nicely.

  • @joshuakellerman4104

    That extra stop in the highlights in the Komodo is actually a B&W image (usually using the blue color channel, which clips last). It doesn't have any color information, and you can see that in your waveform monitor. The nice thing is, if want, you can colorize that luma range to whatever you want (sky blue in this case) and by giving it a little saturation, you can really make it look like it captured 14 full-color stops of dynamic range.

      It's a good point though! Most people do a rolling shutter test where they shake the camera like crazy, and the only time you would see that is in extreme action or a lazy vlog. I think he was making the point that you shouldn't buy the red for the global shutter if most of your footage looks like this: Slow pan to the left
      Which lets be honest, the majority of people do. Even Hollywood has very few situations with fast pans even.

    Hi, as someone with a newly acquired C70 and new to C-Log2, it would be great for a tutorial on how you are metering exposure. I've seen that Log2 is traditionally exposed two-stops over, whereas some are saying under expose etc. with the C70. I did a talking head shot today and the electronic meter was telling me I was two stops over but the LCD with an internal LUT applied looked spot on. Later, When I dropped in a LUT, the image was two stops under exposed. So confused... thankfully I was able to push and pull in post and it looks fine. I just subscribed to your channel and I'll pick up your LUTS too. Hoping you can help with a tutorial for us NOOBs. Thank You!

      I've done tests of Canon C300 mk III, and there's some difference in the DR between recording in RAW vs XF-AVC Intra. I suppose C70 is pretty much the same as to record on C300 in XF-AVC. It's like in RAW the c300 mk III clips at 6.2 stops by Canon's spec sheet, and that's exactly what it is on practice. While setting the camera to XF-AVC recording - it clips somewhere at +5 stops. Also, XF-AVC has a lot of denoise happening, compared to the RAW from same camera. And when I say a lot- it's like HELL LOT. C300 mk III is def. not bad at low end of DR, -4 stops def. shows some noise, which you'll usually find at -3 stops on MX Red's and Alexa in RAW. But going deeper is going to show a lot of noise in red and green channel, and huge color shifts with some smearing at -5 stops. Speaking about roll-off, if you're using Davinci Resolve - you can utilize the Color Space Transform tool and go from C-Log2 to Arri Log-C to Arri Rec709, and have a smoother roll-off. Speaking that, colorspace transform isn't ideal, but it works really good on C300 (and c70 obviously), way better than with older Red's footage.

      I've said this multiple times when I saw the first C70 clips next to the C300 III and people gave the C70 excuses lol. It's half the price of the new C300, no way they were gonna have the same IQ. RED has the nicest highlight rolloff aside from ARRI. Canon is good for a lot of stuff, but they always have a more video look for a lot of reasons.

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the Komodo is a great camera with a really beautiful image that is flexible in post. However, it is not the right camera for me. The c500 Mark ii offers full frame 60p which I use every single shoot (especially with boxing), built in ND’s (which are great for run n gun), built in audio which speeds up post for me, and a rock solid pl mount for mounting cinema glass. For me, that makes it perfect for what I do 👍

    In this whole test there is no mention of the thing that jumps out at me: highlight rolloff. The C70 does not do so well in highlights. They often look clipped even if they're not. Perhaps a different gamma curve could fix that. In one shot however there is awful yellow, channel-clipping in the highlights. I want the C70 to be great but I keep seeing colour artifacts with it. Unfortunately it doesn’t look quite like the C300 mk3. I've been thinking of going for both these cameras so thanks for the test!

      ya the models hair completely disappears, I wonder if under exposing the the c70 would help so it can take better advantage of its dual gain. This could also be because of the iso he was using using, finding and sticking to the native iso's would help these tests a lot. Would love to see the dynamic range distribution over varying iso's for both cameras.

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ethan I only used the native iso of 800 on both. C70 loves the shadows a little more than the highlights. However I don’t feel this test shows the full picture. The highlight roll off is actually quite good IMO

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used multiple ef lenses on the c70. The ability to adjust af speed is determined on how old your lens is. Not all canon ef lenses will support that functionality (like the 50 1.2), but this is the case on any canon cinema camera with these lenses

Also, time is money and if we have to spend more time editing the footage to match our canon cameras it is not worth it. Also, I don’t shoot a lot of 120p so it definitely wouldn’t be worth it for me. That said, both of those cameras make great options for those who shoot Sony or don’t have a lot tying them in to one brand

    Unsure what c-log you shot the c70 in, but the highlights on her hair are way way clippier and more video-y than with the filmic rolloff of the komodo, esp after LUTs. Komodo def wins for pro narrative/commercial work where raw quality > all and slo-mo and af not really necessary, c70 for run n' gun, one man band, doc, and music vids

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed. Clog 2 is what I used. Unfortunately because the Komodo doesn't have built in ND's, it wasnt a perfect exposure match the c70 was slightly brighter causing the highlights to clip more and appear to have a worse role off. To me they feel about the same in highlight roll off after grading the footage.
